Early Childhood Education Program

The name of my center is McCall & McCall Child Care. Our center is located at 4314 Summit Ave Greensboro, NC 27405. We a four star child care center that can have up to 72 children enrolled. Our center offers first and second shift services. First shift is 6:00am- 5:30pm. Second shift is 2:00pm to 12:00am. There will be ten lead teachers in all for the classrooms at our center. We provide care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children. The ages range from 0 months to 12 years old. Here we recognize the value and importance of childhood as a uniquely special time in life for both children and their families. Each of the children and staff are like family. We understand it is with us they will spend a lot of their day with. Our center appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage of the human life cycle, base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn, and support the bond between the child and family. It is here that our families and their children well get educational programs that are stimulating and age appropriate, warmth and caring from our teachers and staff, and regular access to teachers and observation of classroom activities.

McCall & McCall Child Care vision is to be recognized as a frontrunner in Greensboro for early childhood programs that prepare children from birth to school agers for success in their future educational accomplishments. McCall & McCall’s students will be independent thinkers with a love of learning.

"All children have access to a safe and accessible, high quality early childhood education that includes a developmentally appropriate curriculum; knowledgeable and well-trained program staff and educators; and comprehensive services that support their health, nutrition, and social well-being, in an environment that respects and supports diversity. My early childhood professionals will be supported as professionals, professional development opportunities, and compensation that attracts and retains high quality educators. The families will have access to early childhood education programs that are affordable and of high quality and actively participate in their children's education as respected reciprocal partners." (About NAEYC, 2009)

Our mission is to provide high-quality preschool education, creating life-long learners of children through our curriculum. We are "to serve and act on the needs, rights and well-being of all young children with primary focus on the provision of educational and developmental services and resources." (About NAEYC, 2009) In order for us to achieve our mission and act on our beliefs, we will focus our curriculum on the child’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional. My teachers will recognize the importance of safe, caring relationships and collaborations with children and their families. We’ll use developmentally appropriate practices that stimulate child-guided, active explorations of meaningful questions. The fact that the way children view world starts at their homes. We will include ways to have family voices and culture incorporated into our classrooms and programs.

The philosophy base for McCall & McCall Preschool is a safe, respectful, responsive and positive place to be. It is a place the children supported and helped to establish healthy relationships with others, able to solve interesting problems and in figuring out who they are and how they fit in their family and community. Our families are able to feel connected to the preschool knowing that their children are cared for and nurtured in a way that respects their own cultural and familial beliefs. It is a place where families will learn and have their voices valued.

The curriculum for our infant program is a combination of safe and loving care and the right amount of stimulation and teaching. McCall & McCall offers an environment for infants that include a focused program on their physical, emotional, and intellectual development. We choose to use this curriculum to insure that your infant’s day will include activities such as language, fine motor, large motor and sensory development. It’s geared for the child’s age and development, let’s each of the children learn at their own pace, give each family the chance to see their child’s individual milestones, and encourage independence and learning new skills. The teachers talk to the infants about their daily activities and mimic sounds made by the child to encourage language stimulation.

Curriculum for our toddlers is design so their day so they can learn and enjoy both active and quiet time, running and jumping, art and music activities, and listening to stories and looking at books. Their teachers encourage sensory activities by using play-doh, finger paint, and sand and water play. Our toddler classrooms are filled with different textures for them to feel and experience. During this age the toddlers are learning to feed themselves, dress themselves and become more self-efficient. Puzzles, push button toys, and small building blocks encourage the refinement of their small motor skills, their beginning use of logic and their creativity. It is also the time where they are learning to walk, run, climb, and ride toys. In our classrooms and playgrounds we have well-equipped with riding toys, swings, push toys, sprinklers and swimming pools and more.

Our two year olds are given opportunities to share and cooperate with others in small groups. They listen to stories, dramatize daily events and are given plenty of time to interact with adults and other children. Weekly themes are integrated into the curriculum to keep learning interactive as we encourage language development, cognitive skills, imaginative playtime, creativity, physical activity and emotional development. The program balances structured educational activities and creative playtime, where they are encouraged to develop socially and become more self-aware. Here three year olds are introduce learning centers in the classroom and at given times in the day allow the children opportunities to choose how they want to spend their time. The activity centers encourage dramatic play, block building, music, art and science. Our teacher-directed activities are used to encourage and stimulate language, small motor and gross motor skills. Each teacher uses a "circle time" every day for the children to come together as a group to share events, communicate and enjoy stories.

Four year olds curriculum designed for our students who will be kinder garters the following school year. This program builds on the preschool curriculum, along with skills that prepare them for kindergarten. Educational activities offer experiences in language, math, science, social studies, music and art. Teachers inspire the growth of each child’s self-esteem, cultural identity, independence and individual strengths. Children are developing control of their own behavior through the direction and support of our professional, caring teachers who use their expertise to provide for each child’s physical, emotional, and intellectual needs. Our school-agers McCall & McCall’s school buses pick up children from several schools, and some children arrive on the public school buses for our afternoon program. They are greeted in the afternoon with a nutritious snack followed by a balanced mix of active and quiet time. We believe school-age children need time to jump, run and play to burn off the energy they have held in all day. Our playgrounds provide the space for group games, swinging, and climbing. Our indoor activity areas offer a variety of centers for children to choose art, science, dramatic play, building blocks and more. We offer a supervised quiet time that enables the school-agers to complete homework assignments. When these children are out of school for holidays we plan a variety of special field trips skating, bowling, movies, museums, and other adventures.

We believe "the design should provide features which encourage strong, positive relationships between staff and children."(Moravec, 2003) In the classroom some of the things to consider when starting to setup would be the lighting and temperature of the room. It’s important that the children feel comfortable in the class. It’s critical that you keep in mind your floor plan and try to maximize classroom space. For example in the preschool classroom has to include many different learning areas, such as a reading area, an art center, music center, technology area, and etc. There are things to remember when arranging the learning areas. "The room dividers should be low so that all areas are visible to the teacher and students. Areas that are quiet, where students can read shouldn’t be close to the louder centers. The art or other messy areas are best located near a sink because it’s easier to clean up. As the teacher you should always be able to make eye contact with all students." (Johnston, 2012) The children should be able to maneuver throughout the classroom without feeling crowded.

The furnishings and equipment in a child care program should motivate all aspects of children’s development in a variety of ways. "The way in which the environment is set up will influence how children respond to their environment and the kinds of activities they will engage in, and will thus influence their development." (Moravec, 2003) This is a list of some of the furniture that should be in the classroom. Each child should have a cot or foam mattress with waterproof cover to nap on. The needs to be child size chairs for each child to sit in. The tables should be child size as well. In the restrooms it should have child-size or low sinks and toilets, or step stools so that children can reach both. There should be a variety of kitchen appliances for the children to play with in dramatic area. It should also include tools to cook with like measuring cups, mixing spoons, pots, pans, frying pan, spatula, cookie cutters.

Shelves are needed to store items such as puzzles and other items, but also provide easy access to the children. The children should have individual cubby or other private storage area for themselves. Coat hooks at child’s height should be in the room for them to learn how to hang up their coats. Accessible open storages with labels (picture labels or color appropriate) are important in the class. In the sand and water area there needs to be a sand table and water table. The accessories for the sand table would be digging tools, pails, containers for measuring and molding, funnels and sifters. Accessories for the water area are boats, items that float or sink, squeeze bottles, pumps, sponges, and containers to fill and measure with. The art area can have all types of items. Things such as jumbo crayons, paper (assorted textures, sizes, colors), drawing materials (crayons, pencils, erasers, rulers), double sided easels, drying rack or drying space for artwork, chalkboard and chalk, paint brushes and paints (variety of colors), finger paint supplies, paint smocks, gluing supplies, scissors (different sizes, right- and left-handed), collage materials (multicultural photos), and three-dimensional materials (modeling dough, clay, recyclables).

The teachers here at our center are expected to continue their professional growth and development by participating in educational and advanced certification programs designed to keep them at the forefront of new methods in early education and childhood development. In addition to their professional qualifications, our teachers are chosen based on their character, creativity and capacity for patience and caring. All our teachers come in the door with their early childhood credentials it’s a must. The after school teachers are required to have their BSACs. We also offer a reimbursement program that works with our teacher to farther their education. Each of our classrooms has our staff ratio posted in our classrooms. We pay for all our staff to attend educational workshops. We strongly believe that it’s important for our children to learn to share and to be responsible members of their community. We will teach them by being role models ourselves. McCall & McCall’s staff and families will participate in community services in a variety of ways throughout the year. The families of our schools participate in the Annual Food Drive for the Homeless sponsored by Greensboro Urban Ministries. Our teachers and staff participate in blood drives sponsored by the American Red Cross as crises occur. In October of each year, our staff donates to a local organization working on breast cancer awareness and McCall &McCall Child Care matches dollar for dollar the staff's contribution. These are just a few of the ways

The center’s discipline policy is as followed the appropriate discipline allowed is a calming down time, averting attention, loss of privileges and separation. Parents are asked to immediately remove any disruptive child or any child who poses a danger to other children. In extreme behavior situations there are steps that will be taken: child will be separated from the group for a time to calm down, there will be a conference scheduled between the caretakers, lead teacher, and the administrator, and the child will be suspended for one day. If the behavior continues there will be discussion about discharge. Our staff members are not allowed to use abuse or neglect, allow other children to disciple, lock child in room, use profanities, humiliate, frighten, or threaten a child, punish for not sleeping, eating, or accidents, or penalize the whole group because of one child.

There is a plan for our families/staff to communicate. It starts with our pre enrolment appointment. This involves the parents/guardians to come in and have a tour of our facility. Our School Directors walk prospective families through the schools and the playgrounds, showing them the educational materials and play equipment available for their child. We provide parents with a full packet of information that includes our educational philosophy and our school policies and procedures. The classrooms host open houses and parents can see examples of the work and hear from the teacher an overview of the activities. We want parents to look at the art and our teaching materials displayed in the school hallways and around the classrooms. An individual parent-teacher conference may be scheduled at any time the parents or the teacher feel that a longer conversation is needed to address a concern with a child. Typically the School Director will partake in these conferences to guarantee that all the needs are identified and resolved. The assessment process used to document children’s progress is "observations well-defined checklist with observation training is critical and essential for an assessment system. Observations of child behaviors and skills provide the teacher with a powerful measure of a child’s abilities."(Decker, 2009) Our teachers may use diagnostic assessments to identify a range of strengths and weaknesses in the students and suggests specific remedial actions.

As stated previously the staff ratio sheets are posted in each classroom. Children birth to twelve months is 1:5 maximum group size (mgs) 10. Twelve months to twenty-four months is 1:6 mgs 12. Two to three years old its 1:10 mgs 20. Three to four year olds is 1:15 mgs 25. Four to five year olds is 1: 20 mgs 25. Five years old and up is 1: 25 mgs 25. We make sure at all times we follow these ratios. We have floaters that rotate to different rooms, or able to teach a class if a teacher is out. We understand that it is important that each child is able to get the supervision and the attention he/she needs to get the best learning experience possible. One health and safety policy is that all our staff is trained in First Aides, CPR, Child Abuse Prevention, and management Communicable Diseases. In event that there is an incident at the center it is properly recorded on one of our incident reports and kept on file. Strategy for program evaluations is to regularly evaluate early childhood programs based on the program’s goals. This way our center can improve the quality of education and other services provided to our children who attend and their families. A great evaluation tool is the NAEYC standards which is a national organization. These standards along with our goals would be good to use when evaluating our program.

This paper is the guidelines and layout of the McCall & McCall Child Care Center. Our mission is to provide high-quality preschool education, creating life-long learners of children through our curriculum. We are "to serve and act on the needs, rights and well-being of all young children with primary focus on the provision of educational and developmental services and resources." (About NAEYC, 2009) This is the drive behind the service we provide for the children and the families of our center. We are firm believers that it does take a whole village to raise a child. We work together with the children, their families, and our community. To provide the best safe learning environment to each child who attends no matter what culture, race, sex, or background they come from. We respect and understand it is a privilege to be trusted with the care and well-being of each family’s children.
