Following the suggestion, the effects of incidental advertising will be examined in terms of implicit memories (cognitive responses), emotions and attitudes (affective responses) and consideration set (behavioural responses). The endogenous variables consist of factors that, as consumer traits, affect the whole advertising response process. III.2. Incidental advertising exposure

Ferraro, Chartrand and Fitzsimons (2005) define incidental exposure as an automatic processing of visual brand information while conscious attention is directed elsewhere. Vanhuele et al. (2005) talked about focal versus non-focal attention in the case of visual perception. Focal vision is restricted to 1,5 to 5 degrees from the current point of focus. To define it, Shapiro (1999) suggests that while a person spotlights conscious attention on a primary task, other information that is not attended to can be processed. More speci¬cally, preattentive processing occurs when an individual is preconscious exposed to stimulus in his peripheral ¬eld of vision (e.g., banner advertisements) while focusing his attention on a primary task (e.g., reading an article on the web) (Ruy and al, 2006).

In the field of advertising Shapiro, McInnis and Heckler (1997) were the first to propose the incidental exposure paradigm where they stipulate that subjects are directed to focus their attention on primary task, thus reducing the resources accessible to process secondary information bordering the primary information. Prior research has attributed incidental advertising exposure effects to perceptual fluency arising from a feature analysis that occurs during exposure (Janiszewski, 1993; Shapiro et al., 1997). It is necessary to review the process by which preattentive processing may facilitate individuals' responses. Two underlying mechanisms have been suggested: feature and semantic analysis. Both analysis mechanisms during preattentive processing will be briefly discussed:

Feature analysis: Perceptual fluency asserts that when exposure leads to a memory trace for the perceptual features of the stimulus (e.g., shape and brightness), the features of the stimulus are more easily processed on a subsequent occasion. Without explicit memory for having just seen the stimulus, this ease in processing is misattributed as an increase in familiarity and/or preference for the stimulus (Bornstein, 1989). Perceptual fluency may be ascertained as the ease of processing the perceptual features of a stimulus (Jacoby and Kelley, 1987). Prior exposure is thought to create a feature based representation of the stimulus in memory, with the result that processing of the stimulus on subsequent encounters is facilitated and experienced as subjective ease. Shapiro, McInnis and Heckler (1997) indicate that the effects of incidental ad exposure on stimulus-based judgements (attitude judgements made in the presence of an ad or brand) are due at feature analysis that occurs during processing (Janiszewski, 1993). When a product is depicted by itself, unconscious ad influences rely on a feature analysis that occurs during exposure. This analysis creates perceptual fluency effects.

The results of experiments in Shapiro's (1999) study showed that subjects in the context condition had greater levels of unconscious ad influence and those in the no context condition. This demonstrated that semantic relatedness between the product and other contextual ad information affects differentially the likelihood that the product's name would be activated in memory, and, thus, the likelihood that the advertised product would be included in consideration set. This suggests that semantic processing of contextual ad information is what accounts for the context facilitations effects.

In our work, we refer to one of the major theories that explain the effects of incidental advertising which is the theory of Zajonc (1968) called «mere exposure and subconscious processing». In fact, Zajonc (1968) defines the mere exposure effect as the observation that« mere repeated exposure of individual to a stimulus is a sufficient condition for the improvement of his attitude toward it». By "mere exposure" is meant a condition which just makes the given stimulus attainable to the individual's perception. It arises when repeated or single exposure to a stimulus, even in the absence of acquaintance, results in the formation of a positive affective reaction to the stimulus (Zajonc, 1968). In another side, Janiszewski (1993) defines mere exposure to a brand name or product package as the process that encourages a consumer to have a more favourable attitude toward the brand, even when the consumer cannot recollect the basic exposure.

This theory is interesting for our study as Zajonc (1968) found that as number of exposure increased, so too did the favourable evaluations. Bornstein, Leone and Galley (1987) have approved these effects when participants are aware as well as not of the presence of stimuli. Further, Ye and Raaij (1997) suggested another definition of mere exposure as they claim that the mere-exposure effect in the absence of awareness represents implicit memory. But previously marketing studies examining memory for advertisements have relied approximately wholly on examining effects contingent on explicit memory retrieval. In psychology, memory is an organism's ability to store, retain, and recall information.

Kronlund, Whittlesea and Yoon (2001) define memory as the commander of all acquired human behaviour, containing speech, conceptual apprehension, skilled activities, social interactions, and consumer preferences. In another side, neuroscientists define memory as the retention of learned information, the acquisition, storage and retrieval of information. To achieve a true understanding of any aspect of human behaviour, it is therefore essential to have an effective theory of memory. One type of memory that emerges from an exposure event is explicit memory (Yoo, 2005). At the time of exposure, a depiction of the information is encoded in memory and is correlated with a spatio-temporal context that attaches the information to the exposure incident. III.4. Emotional responses

Until now, there is no scientific and precise definition of the term emotion. In colloquial language, the term is used to refer to feelings and moods and also refers to the way these are expressed both in behaviour and bodily answers (Kandel; Schwartz and Jess ell, 2000). The Longman Dictionary definition of emotion is strong feeling (e.g. anger, fear, joy) usually incorporating physiological change (1984). Further, according to the complete Oxford English Dictionary, in a psychological classification the term emotion refers to "a mental feeling or affection" (e.g.: of pleasure or pain, desire or aversion, surprise, hope or fear, etc.) as distinguished from cognitive or volitional states or consciousness also abstr "feeling" as distinguished from the other classes of mental phenomena (OED, 1994 version). We think that this misunderstood of the central role of affect in persuasion processing is the reason of wasting a lot of money. One of the goals of our study is to examine the structure of the feelings that consumers experience concurrently during incidental advertising and to determine the impact of the structure of these feelings on attitude toward the brand name recall.

One of the things reported by neuroscientist is that when we are experiencing something, if it is entirely processed, all of it is component parts will be stored in various parts of our memory (Flemming, Christensen and Lundsteen, 2006). According to the cue accessibility hypothesis, the emotions associated with a brand and how it is presented are already present at the moment of recall. It was, in fact, found that positive feelings have an effect on at the time of recall (Yoo, 2007). This theory stipulates that positive affect influences the way in which cognitive material is combined. A recent study of Berkowitz(1987) have found superior memory in positive-affect subjects, so people who are feeling happy showed eased recall of materials. In fact, Berkowitz (1987) gave the evidence that positive affect has an effect on categorization, word association and organisation in memory. Taken together, the following hypothesis is suggested:

H.2. Positive feelings (Pleasure) evoked by consumer at the moment of incidental exposure to advertising affects positively the implicit memory performances.

III.5. Product involvement

One of the most extensive intervening variables in the communication, attitude, and persuasion literatures date is involvement. Krugman (1965) was the first to introduce the concept of involvement into the marketing literature to help explain the different level of processing varied advertisements appeared to receive. There are many definitions of involvement starting with Cohen (1983) who views involvement as "A person's activation level at a particular moment in time". Day, Stafford et al. (1995) described product involvement as "the general level of the centrality of the object or the centrality of the object to the person's ego structure". Mitchell (1983) defined involvement as a motivational state having two dimensions; intensity and direction. Intensity refers to the amount of attention devoted to processing stimuli whereas direction refers to where that attention is focused, which may be determined by the processing goal of the individual.

The common denominator between these definitions is the degree of interest a person has in an object (Douglas, 2006). Janiszewski and Chakravarti (2003) regarded product involvement as a central framework, vital to understanding consumer-decision making behaviour and associated communications. Celsi and Olson (1988) note that the extent to which a product is viewed as personally relevant, in that it is perceived in some way to be instrumental. They have suggested that involvement can be affective or cognitive in nature. Affective involvement is the expressive, emotional type of involvement. Petty, Cacioppo and Schumann (1983) propose the involvement in its functional nature. Their subjects who respected to receive a product were highly involved with that product.

Greenwald and Leavitt (1984) affirmed that the level of involvement differ with respect to the amount of attentional capacity devoted to processing the stimuli where as direction refers to where that attention is focused, which may be induced by the processing goal of individual. Different types of involvement have been studied in the advertising effects studies (situation, enduring involvement and product involvement). Over them, investigating individual's common interest in a product is of great importance for marketers and advertisers to develop effective marketing and advertising campaigns and thus the construct 'product involvement' has been a focus of many research. Zaichkowsky (1985) defined product involvement as the relevance that an individual perceives in the product's values according to their own interests and needs. Further, Traylor (1983) defined product involvement as recognition that certain product classes may be more or less central to an individual's life, attitudes about self, sense of identity and relationship to the rest of the world.

According to the Elaboration Likelihood Model, the involvement is a state of energy that a person experiences in regard to consumption-related activity. Involvement is often thought of as a continuum of a willingness to expand effort (Petty, Cacioppo and Schumann, 1983). This continuum is anchored by high involvement and low involvement. In an advertising context, the model holds that the process responsible for ad effectiveness is one of two relatively distinct routes of persuasion. The first, known as the central route, this route is induced in high involvement situation that would enhance an individual's motivation for issue relevant thinking and increase elaboration likelihood model (Lien, 2001).At the same time, a low involvement situation would conceive low consumer motivation to process information, which leads to a greater possibility of peripheral route to persuasion. Individuals are less motivated to treat information for a low involvement product while they are more likely to recall and recognize it.

Chung and Szymanski (1997) had shown that a low involvement product is typically classified as one in which little cognitive effort is put forth to make a decision about buying the product. A high-involvement product, on the other hand, is a product that requires much thought, consideration and research before making a purchase decision. Studies demonstrated that with increased elaboration, explicit memory increased while implicit memory stated the same so products that do not require much elaboration or a large amount of time to make a brand choice will often not be recalled explicitly when in a real world shopping situation because the consumers are not putting in the effort to elaborate and remember explicit details about the advertisements. In fact, Wright (1973) reported the fact that receiver involvement influenced the cognitive process, which subsequently mediated attitudinal message acceptance.

The level of involvement of a product can affect memory measures. Priming emerges to be more effective measure for products that are low involvement rather than high involvement. When a product does not require much elaboration for purchase, a purchase decision is more likely to be based upon such features as brand name or logo that are often more easily recalled using implicit rather than explicit memory. Zaichowsky (1985) suggests that low involvement would lead to a relative lack of information seeking behaviors while high involvement would lead consumers to be more interested in acquiring information about the brand and product attributes. Further, when consumers are highly involved with the stimulus, they have strong motivation to process that stimulus. Therefore, their attention level will be higher than consumers with low involvement and highly involved consumers will be more likely to process the information given by the incidental advertising.

Earlier studies outlined that individuals with a high product involvement are more likely to recall and recognize the presented ad information, while those with a low product involvement are less likely to recall and recognize it (Yoo, 2005). But most of these studies were conducted in the setting of focal attentive processing where individuals are constrained to be exposed to and to process the ad information presented. Findings of Janiszewski (1990) and Shapiro (1997) show that subjects are affected by advertisements even when those ads are outside their attentional focus and they do not consciously process it, so attempts at explicit memory retrieval of the recognition fail while response bias due to implicit memory retrieval still occur. Thus, showing no effect for product involvement on implicit memory is important for incidental processing because it illustrates that if priming of incidental advertising occurs , then some form of memory exists that it does not dominated by the processing level involvement in the during incidental processing. Based on the above discussion and the results of prior studies, the third hypothesis is suggested:

Brand names and logos are omnipresent in the everyday environment. They are under our feet at the supermarket; they serve in as props in our favourite TV shows. These are just a few examples of ways in which people are continually and steadily exposed to brands in the course of their daily activities. Sometimes, these brands displays are able to capture people's attention, and as a result, people may or may not be aware that they have been exposed to brands in these contexts. Other times, however, this brand exposure is not the focal point of their attention, and as a result people may or may not be aware that they have been exposed to brands in these contexts. Researchers have long admitted that despite-or perhaps because of-the growing volume of quotidian advertising, any individual advertisement is exceptionally the primary focus of consumer processing. Rather, consumers principally focus on the non-advertising or editorial material that circles the advertisements. Under such conditions, most advertisements will receive no processing, some advertisements will acquire limited processing, and a few will be processed in depth (McQuarrie and Mick, 2006). Actually, recent research in marketing and social psychology proposes that attitudes, choices and behavior can be influenced as a function of incidental brand exposure (Janiszewski, 1993; Ferraro, Chartrand and Fitzsimons, 2006; Adams, 2007).

Conscious and nonconscious processes and that degree to which nonconscious processes influence the consumer choice process is much greater than most choice researchers believe. So, even if people are not aware that they have been exposed to brands, these brands may still be processed and have effects on subsequent attitudes and behaviors. In fact, human beings can acquire information without full conscious awareness, but there are real constraints to this. We have only certain amount of mental processing capacity at one time. Some stimuli get only empty mental processing, while others receive deep processing. The last two decades of research on the influence of incidental stimulus exposures has proved that preferences can be formed without an accompanying awareness of the preference formation process (Sutherland and Sylvester, 2000).

Interest in showing the effects of incidental exposure to brands has been ongoing since the 1950 when Vicary pretended to have successfully used subliminal exposure. Subliminal perception needs an alteration in attitudes or behavior but incidental brand exposure, by contrast, may modify behaviour through a much simpler, more direct route when the brands are familiar to the consumer. Like research on preconscious processing, our research deals with situations in which consumers are unaware of the nonattended information. In other words, consumers are not conscious of ads or ad information because they are paying attention to something else, not because advertisers control the nature of the exposure (Yoo, 2005). Given the enormity of advertising clutter and the fact that consumers are often comprised in tasks that occupy attention and limit ad processing, it is quite likely that the majority of advertisements do not receive any active processing. Interestingly, however, recent research has indicated that incidental exposure to advertisements can have an effect on subsequent judgments (Shapiro, McInnis and Heckler, 1997, Adams, 2007)

Firms have converted to the method of incidental advertising because its secrecy nature permits it to be more innocus than traditional print and television advertising, and can thus potentially influence perceivers without their efforts to escape or counterargue the message. But, some researchers have argued that these demonstrations are not as strong as they could be because it is not completely clear if the experimental exposures were really non-focal (Janiszewski, 1997; Vanhuele et al., 2005; Adams, 2005). What we can notice from previous research is that there is a disagreement among the measures of implicit memory (Janiszewski, 1997; Vanhuele et al., 2005). In fact, Vanhuele et al. (2005) make a lot of criticism about the efficacy of such advertising. They argue that the demonstrations of researchers are not powerful as they could be because it is not clear if the experimental exposures were really non-focal. Ferraro, Chartrand and Fitzsimons (2006) wonder: Is this type of incidental exposure worth the expense? In other words: does it work?

Despite the continued effort to theorize how incidental advertising works, little has been known about how incidental advertising may affect consumer's responses when the advertisements are outside of consumer's attentional focus. In fact, the debate surrounding the effects of incidental advertising has intrigued academician's attention to this medium and in spite of its importance, a majority of the prior researches done in the context of advertising has concentrated on a cognitive process involving conscious attention to advertisements and less researches attention has been paid to incidental processing of advertisements. Increasingly, however, research has shown that a large part of consumer decision making occurs outside of conscious awareness or is influenced by factors unrecognized by the decision maker (Janiszewski, 1997, Adams, 2007, Droulers, 2004). One chief issue of importance is to develop an accurate methodology to investigate preattentive processing of incidental advertising exposure and its effects. One of the disadvantages of prior research on preattentive processing in the advertising context is that the existence of processing is decided by attitude toward the brand (Janiszewski, 1993). However, using attitude change as an indicator of preattentive processing is problematic because attitudes can be influenced by multiple factors such as advertisement placement and advertisement content. Therefore, independant proof for the existence of such processing is essential to evince the preattentive processing-attitudes relationships.

Further, there are four emerging issues when it comes to investigate preattentive processing of incidental advertising exposure: (1) revealing the existence of preattentive processing of incidental advertisements (2) specifying the factors affecting such processing (3) making clear the relationships between preattentive processing and attitude formation ; and conceiving an appropriate methodology to examine unconscious processing of incidental advertising exposure (4). By unifying the measure of preattentive processing from the measure of attitude changes, it becomes possible to directly prove that preattentive processing of incidental advertising exposure influences the attitude formation process through cognitive and affective responses.

The present research will contribute to the advertising research and practice in several ways. In fact, an empirical examination of unconscious processing of incidental advertising would make theoretical, methodological and practical contributions. From a theoretical perspective, the objective of this study is to prove that consumers memorize information from incidental advertisement message in two ways: implicitly and explicitly and that those types of memorization are influenced simultaneously by cognitive and affective reactions. We want to discover how cognitive treatment of advertisement cue conducts to an implicit/explicit memorization. We want to know how emotion influences those types of memorization, too.

Because inclusion of product in consideration set is often a chief condition for choice, we try to investigate how an incidental exposure to brand names can affect subsequent brand choices even when the consumer is not aware of the effect of prior exposure, often referred to as an 'implicit memory' perspective, and demonstrate how this framework can offer an insight for examining brand choices made. In this work, we wonder under what conditions, incidental advertising exposure affects the formation of consideration sets? The answer to this question would be an important contribution to the understanding of the effect of low-involvement processing on advertising effectiveness. This study is the first to consider the moderating role of characteristics of the person: gender and the dimensions of visualizer / verbalizer of cognitive style in studying the effects of incidental advertising in the formation of consumer consideration set. In fact, one of the aims of our study is to investigate the studies developed in the field of neuroscience to better understand the effect of the gender and cognitive style of consumers in their memorization of the incidental advertised brand.

Methodologically, the dissertation will suggest the appropriate measure (i.e., implicit memory) to detect the existence of preattentive processing and we will use a new self report instrument assessing the individual differences in object imagery, spatial imagery and verbal cognitive style: the Object-Spatial Imagery and Verbal Questionnaire of Blazhenkova and Kohzevnikov (2009). Stemming from social and cognitive psychology research, the most recent implicit and explicit memory theories and attitude theoretical backgrounds are used in this study. The analysis of incidental advertising can offer enormous help to practioners and academicians who are interested in the impact of this communication on end users. As there is only limited empirical evidence that unconscious process can influence a consumer's response to a marketing communication, our managerial aim is to demonstrate for managers how to conceive an advertisement cue that causes those types of memorization. Familiarity conceived by incidental advertising has the potential to be a versatile managerial tool. Brand managers that take on in event sponsorship, licensing and promotion should maximize consumer exposure to their brand name. Incidental exposure to a brand is adequate. The results of this study carry distinguishing interest for marketing incidental advertising practioners, because the methodology permits for the investigation of the effects of gender and cognitive style of consumers, which previously have not been studied.

The research questions proposed to achieve the objectives of this research are: Does incidental advertising exposure affect the implicit memorization of the brand? How does product involvement affect the implicit memory performances? Do males and females think in the same way in the case of incidental advertising exposure? Does gender and cognitive style affect implicit memorization of the brand name in the case of incidental advertising exposure? Does cognitive style of consumer affect the implicit memorization of the brand name in the case of incidental advertising? Does implicit memories and emotional responses generated by incidental advertising affect positively attitude toward the advertised brand? Up to what point can one affirm that the implicit memorization of the brand name in the case of incidental advertising exposure increases likelihood that a product depicted in the ad will be included in consideration set? .

The dissertation is organised in eight chapters. Chapter 1 provides prior literature treating the history of development of the unconscious cognition concept. Chapter 2 presents a meta-analysis of prior studies studying the concept of incidental advertising. Chapter 3 reviews emerging research and develops a conceptual model of how incidental advertising works. Furthermore eight hypotheses as to factors that may incidental processing and effects are given. Chapter 4 provides the research methods and results of three pretests. The research design of the main study is presented in the fifth chapter followed by the results in chapter 6. Implications for both advertising theory and practice, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed in chapter 7.
