Background

SitesPower is a training institute specialized in providing Technical courses in IT and courses in Business Management fields. It is based in Dubai and with a branch in Sharjah. It has been approved by the UAE - Ministry of Education and it is an approved and accredited institute from awarding bodies like ILM, Autodesk, and Microsoft... etc. whose courses and trainings are delivered in the institute.

My role at SitesPower training institute is of an ICDL and management trainer. At my current job I do not have a straight forward leadership role. However, I do guide and lead young colleagues working with me and help me in the ICDL course, like operations, computer technicians and Education Consultants whom communicates to the trainees and help them in ICDL course registration. Beside that I act with my students as a leader to help them achieving their objective and getting ICDL certificate.

Organization and team purpose

The importance of the team having a common sense of purpose that supports the overall vision and strategy of the organization or project

SitesPower has specific objectives that represent its vision. The vision of SitesPower is:

Deliver excellence on service

Set the standards for educational services

Be the best training center in the UAE.

Insure the loyalty of its trainees.

Based on its vision, SitesPower motto is: "Dedicated to your success". Therefore I work with my team work to achieve the vision of our training centre. We are communicated to purpose it has to serve. I direct my team work and guide them to the ways that enable them to support our training centre vision and strategy.

The key role that communication plays in establishing a common sense of purpose and the effectiveness of own communication skills assessed

Communication is the key to the successful leadership. In order to navigate their teams to exact direction it is a must for leaders to have effective communication. It is said that the Leader is the one who goes the way, knows the way and shows the way. I communicate always to my team work and also to my trainees and I get feedback from them to know my weaknesses and also my strengths. I work regularly to avoid the weaknesses that affect our training center vision and by the end it will reflect positivity on my team work members.

Your leadership style

The factors that will influence their choice of leadership styles or behaviors in workplace situations are identified

Normally I like the style of the Democratic leadership; because it allows to my team members developing their creativity and improve their Functional skills. However Sometimes I follow different leadership styles with my team members to different considerations.

Following are the factors that will influence my choice of leadership styles in work place and the reasons why they are likely to positively affect my team in the work place situations:

Nature of the Task

Each member in the team knows his responsibilities, so that I follow the leadership style Laissez-faire with them. But some tasks required me to follow another style of leadership styles. Examples:

The Education Consultants have a great responsibility to increase the number of ICDL candidates so that they have to call them, meet them, and explain to them all the information related to this course. So that I let them doing their jobs but as soon as they arrange to meet their clients I direct (Directing leadership style) them to test their levels in the computer knowledge, because this task it is very complicated to let the Education Consultants decide when the candidate can join to the course, because putting candidates with different levels in one group will affect all the candidates together, and we will not be able to deliver this course effectively and we will not be able to achieve the objective from this course.

Another thing; My candidates have a great goal which is a getting ICDL certificate, so that the main task for them is passing in ICDL exams (Seven Exams). In this case I follow the

Facilitating leadership style because they can’t take a decision to attend the exams by themselves, and they need encouragement and support to help them achieving their goal especially that a lot of them afraid of the exams.

Experience and skills of the team

I can’t follow same leadership style with all my team members because they don’t have same level of skills, and some of them haven’t experience in some tasks so that my leadership style depend on the skills and experience of my team members.

Example: Coordinator has a different tasks, he has a good experience in some of them like registration process of the candidate and booking exam for candidates so that the suitable leadership style here is a Laissez-faire style. In another hand he hasn't enough experience in some of them to do them, like monitoring ICDL exams although he is a tester but he hasn’t experience to solve exam's problems and guiding the candidates during the exam; so that the suitable leadership style in this case is the directing style because it enable him to get experience in this field and he we learn how to solve the problems through the exam.

Size of the Tasks and time frame

When the number of tasks that must be performed by the individual large and the time allotted to accomplish the task is limited, this leads to lack of focus in addition to hesitate take an appropriate decisions, leading to delays in the completion of work and doing it with a lot of mistakes. I therefore in such cases use the leadership styles delegation and facilitating of the individual to be able to focus on his work and done properly and within the time specified and to be able taking a suitable decision to do that.

REVIEW OF OWN LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOURS

Based on what I said earlier, I can say that I followed the different leadership styles to lead and guide the members of my team to enable them to complete the work optimally. In the context of my study I would say the following have either partially or fully reflected in my leadership behaviors:

Directing: "Where the leader makes all the decisions and tells people what to do." (ILM 3.10 Course Ware).

Some tasks need more experience by the team members and some of them don’t have like this experience. There are important factors in determining the level of efficiency of team members and their practical experience in their field; and therefore had major impacts in determining the appropriate leadership style to them, namely:

Supervising the performance of the work of team members and followed up on a permanent basis.

Feedback from trainees who provide me always important remarks on the performance of team members especially when they make mistakes.

Common Example about the mistakes made by team members:

Errors in trainees names in their Skill Cards (for ICDL Exams).

Inability to solve the problems of the trainees during ICDL exams

So in this case I’ve to direct them to correct their mistakes and telling them how to do their tasks.

Facilitating: "Where the leader seeks to provide support, facilities, resources and expertise and encourages team members to make their own decisions. The leader effectively becomes a coach and "cheer leader"". (ILM 3.10 Course Ware).

According to this argument, I always wanted to follow this style of leadership with the members of my team did have a great impact on team members to increase productivity and improve the quality of work, in addition to a sense of individuals in a motivation to perform. There are many optimal way in which this was done with the members of my team and the results they have achieved.

As I mentioned earlier that I take my students a part of the team members have been encouraged to approach them a major role in the entry examinations, many of them and their success in obtaining the required certificate. I was told by one of the trainers - and had begun the session with one of my colleagues - that he did not dare to enter the exam ICDL computer but after that followed the session with them, as I removed them the barrier of fear by encouraging them to enter these exams and the need to terminate at the time of early and not delay.

There are many examples of the fruitful results achieved with the members of my team by the method of encouragement.

DELEGATING: "The leader turns over responsibility for decision making and problem solving to subordinates". (ILM 3.10 Course Ware).

Because of the many tasks assigned to me, I delegate task force to do some work to members of my team who have the expertise and efficiency needed to achieve optimal and this:

Delegate the task of booking exams ICDL computer courses to the Coordinator.

Delegated the task of solving the technical problems that occur during the examination, which may affect the outcome of the trainee to a computer technician.

Laissez-faire: "Where the leader has very little personal involvement and leaves the team to get on with it. Can be a risky approach". (ILM 3.10 Course Ware).

I follow like this leadership style with the expertise members in my team members to perform the works quickly and to reach to the achievement the goals as soon as possible.

Motivating, supporting and developing the team

The importance of the leader being able to motivate teams and individuals and gain their commitment to objectives

The leader inspires his team work members, motivate them and guide them to achieve the objectives of the company and also their own objectives.

In order to ensure peak performance in our training centre I need to increase my team's commitment by increasing team unity. I can increase team unity and commitment by creating a team that knows how to work together, set goals together, and progress together.

Increasing team commitment and unifying my team is absolutely necessary to ensure quality performance over both the short term and the long term. A motivation team member is a way to achieve the increasing team commitment and unifying team members. As a team leader I can motivate my team members using different approaches, one of these approaches is Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs:

SitesPower provide team members with all their needs:

Monthly salary increasing yearly depends on the profitability of the training center and the productivity of the team members.

Health insurance.

Weekly vacation on Friday and half a day on Saturday

Improve the skills of its employees and provide them with training course to allow to them achieve self-actualization.

Signing labor contract with them to insure their financial rights.

The main motivational factors in a work context and how these may apply to different situations, teams and individuals.

There are many motivational factors in a work context such as:

Salary and bonuses

Good environment

Good management and colleagues

But these factors different from one to one and from case to case. Team members whom achieve their objectives will be motivated and rewarded, but other team members whom couldn't achieve their objectives will not be rewarded. Also the individual in the team work how make the effort to commitments to the team work goals will be rewarded. In other hand; in some cases and situations like economic situations the motivation will be increased or decreased. By example: In the years 2007 - 2008 there was an economic recovery, so there was a significant increase in the salaries of team members and all the staff, while in 2009 began the global economic crisis and this negatively impact on institutions and companies, resulting in lower salaries of employees in some companies and the expulsion of others in other companies.

The role that the leader plays in supporting and developing the team and its members

The leader plays a great role in supporting ad developing the team and its team members using specific strategies; such as:

Guide them always to the ways that achieve team work goals.

Motivate them in different ways. (Many years ago I invited to the launch in Al Safa Park in Dubai, during the launch I saw a lot of families playing, signing and eating together. I was very surprised about this witness, so I asked somebody there about those people, he told me that those people are a team members in a big company based on Dubai). I still remember that event till now and think it is powerful way used by the team leader to influence and motivate his team members. Finally all the objectives of the team members and organization will be achieved.
