The debate about the effectiveness of continuing education on clinical outcomes is often used as a reason for not requiring continuing education for licensure or as a reason not to attend an educational offering. While admittedly there are difficulties in measuring outcomes, the report states that there is evidence that continuing education can improve knowledge base and skill level, can change behaviors and attitudes, and improve clinical outcomes(Dickerson, 2010).

In spite of the plenty of continuing education offers, many nurses do not participate in these offers. Many barriers have been mentioned in the literature, including lack of institutional support, time constraints, financial considerations and family commitments (Dickerson, 2010; Nalle, Wyatt, & Myers, 2010; Whitehead & Lacey-Haun, 2008). Many organizations do not give money or time for nurses to present in conferences or other continuing education events. Nurses should also make a commitment to the value of education as portion of their responsibility.

The belief that basic nursing education is sufficient for a lifetime of practice is no longer acceptable to the profession. Therefore, continuing education is an important element for professional development.
