Wendys Old Fashioned Hamburgers is an international fast food chain restaurant founded by Dave Thomas on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, United States. The company decided to move its headquarters to Dublin, Ohio, on January 29, 2006. As of March 2010, Wendy's was the world's third largest hamburger fast food chain with approximately 6,650 locations, following McDonald's 31,000+ locations and Burger King's 12,000+ locations. On April 24, 2008, the company announced a merger with Triarc, the parent company of Arby's. Despite the new ownership, Wendy's headquarters remained in Dublin. Previously, Wendy's had rejected more than two buyout offers from Triarc Companies Inc. Following the merger, Triarc became known as Wendy's/Arby's Group, a publicly traded company.

Approximately 77% of Wendy's restaurants are franchised, the majority of which are located in North America. Wendy's and its affiliates employ more than 46,000 people in its global operations. At year 2007, Wendy's International, Inc. (NYSE:WEN) and Berjaya Corporation Berhad announced that they have signed a development agreement to build Wendy's restaurants in Malaysia. Berjaya, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nadi Klasik Sdn Bhd, has been granted the right to develop and operate Wendy's restaurants in Malaysia. Berjaya plans to open the first of these restaurants in Kuala Lumpur in late 2007 or early 2008 and will continue development in the Klang Valley region and other cities over the next 10 years. Wendy's had enter it business in Malaysia since 3 years ago and currently opened total eight outlets .Most of Wendy's outlets are opened only in KL areas inside the shopping complex or in Petaling Jaya shopping complex while not the other areas in Malaysia. These situations make the Wendy's consumers feel that Wendy's fast food are hardly to get it and it doesn't not bring any convenience to them because it outlets normally only can get in shopping mall or shopping complex in KL. Customers feel that Wendy's do not provide any convenience to them compare to Macdonald, KFC or Pizza Hut. This will lead to Wendy's outlets market share in Malaysia getting less and less and facing sales diminishing problem. The problem of outlets location must be solve immediately and consequences in order to avoid continuing of sales drop.

Wendy facing outlet location problems since Wendy's using one of the market coverage strategies-concentrated marketing, which focuses on one small part of the marketplace is for expand their outlets. After opened its first outlet in Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya, and then Wendy's is open seven more outlets concentrated in busy areas which neither in shopping centers in Kuala Lumpur nor in Petaling Jaya. Although expand it outlets in shopping centre or busy areas is a good strategy for fast food industry but over depending on it will lead consumer feel lack of convenience to consume. For those consumers who like shopping always might feel comfortable with Wendy's outlet location because after they shopping they will go for Wendy's for having a lunch or dinner. But for those white-collars or blue collar busy consumer, they might feel inconvenience or wasting time to find a parking and then having a ordinary lunch or dinner in a shopping complex. Furthermore, almost all the Wendy's in Malaysia outlet location is not free standing; this cause Wendy's unavailable to provide drive thru or home delivery services of its product to customer. Secondly, add in home delivery services. For currently trend, product delivery is very important in order to bring customer time saving and convenience. So, by adding home delivery services not only can bring more convenience to the consumer meanwhile can further satisfy the consumer needs.

Lastly, move some of the outlet to free standing building in order to save cost. Rented for a slot in shopping complex is costly compare to rent a free standing building. Moving an outlet might be costly and time consuming but it will worth when it is added drive thru to bring more convenience to customer

As the result of our research, we found out the reasons that causes Wendy's sales drop in the first two quarter in year 2010isWendy without any adequate promotion in any area such as advertising, signboard and leaflets. Besides that, Wendy Company without provide enough promotion budget to promote their product also is another reasons causes sales drop. Moreover, we also found out that Wendy only has a website at abroad, but not in Malaysia. In additional, lack of publicity also is a factor that cause less people knows about Wendy Burger. Therefore, the problem is needed to be solved immediately in order to avoid more incoming threat to occur in our company.

Step 2-Diagnosis and analysis of causes

Wendy without adequate promotion this problem has occurred since Wendy beginning into the hamburger's market of Malaysia, it is because Wendy company management not ready any budget for promotion. Actually, without any advertising will lead to less people know about Wendy Burger and the related information. It is because advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience to purchase or take some action upon products, and also can create the customers having an impulse to buy the product. Besides that, Wendy without provides any website in Malaysia causes many consumer hard to find the related data and information because website has the function to provide customers about the outlet's location, especially Wendy only has 8 outlets in whole Malaysia, and also everything details information such as product menu, product price, any promotion and other detail information.

Firstly, Wendy needs to gain the customer confident and let them know about how good the product is. Actually there are still have many potential customers in the burger market and they haven't made the decision yet. Wendy need to do is attract the potential customers and let them become loyal to the company. Moreover, Wendy also need always pay attention to competitors about their promotion action because competitor reaction is a quite important reason that will influence the company promotion strategy. Therefore, Wendy needs to be always ready for their planning so that won't panic during that emergency moment. Lastly, financial problem is the most important criterion that needs to be focus by Wendy because make the promotion is needs the company financial support and approved by the company top management.

Advertising is the most effective method can be used to increase the sales because advertising has the function to reposition or strengthen our product in consumer mind in order want to reposition the product in higher quality and in more reasonable price through the television, newspaper and radio. Using newspaper this advertising media have the most benefit because newspaper can be consider is quite cheaper media if compare with television and radio. Besides that, newspaper also is the most common advertising media that usually will read by many people.

Website is a collection of related web pages, products images, videos, related data or other digital assets that can be browse by anyone who are interested in. Nowadays, everyone knows how to use a computer online and it is a very common trend in our society. Therefore, set up a website to introduce the company's related information is very important because nowadays many people are always learning and knowing the information from the website.

Leaflets is a small sheet of printed paper that usually contained information, used for dissemination of said information, often an advertisement and intended for free distribution. It is another type of promotion media that can be used to inform people about the company promotion activity. The main advantage of leaflets is low costs and just need several people distribution of leaflets in the street.

Signboard is a board that carrying the name or logo of a business or product which always used for advertising and promotion. Usually signboard is set up on the roadside due to easily pay attention by those passers-by and drivers.

Besides that, by using these advertising mediaalso can make sure the information which want to disseminate reach a huge number of people in a given geographic area.

Step 8-Implementation of alternative

The decision on selected alternative may still fail if it is not implemented. After select the decision alternative, Wendy must implement it include conveying the decision to those affected and getting their commitment to it. People who carry out a decision must enthusiastically endorse the outcome if they participate in it. Moreover, while implement the decision alternative, Wendy also need to pay attention about the environment changes such as competitor action in order to prevent that affect the implementation of decision.

Based on our research on Wendy's in Malaysia, we found out that the marketing mix that Wendy's used have a problem that affect company loss of market share.

On product base, the poor quality of the bread of Wendy's hamburger have bring bad image to consumer. Consumers give a feedback that the bread of burger is worse than normal bread. After an analysis have been done, we found out that this is due to Wendy's cutting production cost of hamburger by collaborate with low quality hamburger bread manufacturer. By using the grid analysis to analyze the alternatives and criteria, we choose to creating own bread recipe to shows the enthusiasm and passion of Wendy's to satisfy customer who wanted to consume on high quality burger in the way that Wendy's always emphasize on the quality of burger, but still need to evaluate whether the alternative successfully resolve the problem.

While on price base, Wendy's selling a group of items at regular low price than it competitor. However, HHby offering low price will result customer's hesitation and decide not to purchase Wendy's product. Based on the research result, this problem actually is causes by Wendy's hired about 500 unnecessary employees to operate the new franchise. This lead to a high operational cost that will link to a financial shortage problem. By using the grid analysis to analyze the alternatives and criteria, the result shown that bundle pricing get most high scores among all the alternatives strategies, bundle pricing is meeting the customer requirements as the customers know it is worthiness to purchase the meal packages at the discount prices which include the high quality of foods and suitable quantity for person. The implementation of bundle pricing is necessary, or else Wendy's will lose many customers and continue suffer in the reduction customer in the future and result in sales drop, but still Wendy's need to evaluate the implement of bundle pricing by collect customer feedback.

On distribution base, Wendy's sale drop is occurs due to its inconvenience stores location. This is causes by Wendy's only focus on one small part of the marketplace, but over depending on it will lead consumer feel lack of convenience to consumers. By using the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) of Wendy's company, the result shown that select the alternatives no.1, that is open more outlets in other areas to increase consumer's awareness as their solution to their problem. However, the alternatives still need to be evaluate over time by analyze the sales data or from customer feedback.

For promotion base, from the result of the research we found out that Wendy's sales drop because of lack of adequate promotion such as advertising, signboard and leaflets. The reason that Wendy's lack of adequate promotion is because the company manager not ready any budget for promotion. By using the PMI (plus, minus, interesting) method, advertising has the highest point among all alternatives. Advertising can disseminate information to consumer though media and can reach many people. While implement this alternative, Wendy's also need to pay attention about the environment changes to prevent that affect the implementation of decision. After implement the alternative, Wendy's can evaluate the alternative by customers' feedback about the satisfaction and the company sales data.
