So, as a future strategy we can propose to expand the brand from hair oil category to complete hair care category. They can include wide range of hair care products like hair colours, hair dye, shampoo, conditioners etc. Parachute should be repositioned to a complete hair care brand and hence it should also focus on gaining significant market share in men's hair care category. Q1. What is the market share of Parachute Coconut Hair OIl?

Parachute Coconut Hair Oil has around 50% market share in hair oil category and is the market leader, followed by Nihar (which is owned now by Marico itself) and Shalimar.

Q2. How do you study market trends, consumer attitudes, and economic trends?

We do lot of Qualitative studies mostly Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Also we get a lot of data about our consumers from sales data which helps us analyse the trends.

Our consumer s are divided into 3 categories.

Primary-Which includes the distributors to whom we immediately sell

Secondary-Which includes the wholesalers and retailers

Tertiary-Which includes the end user of the product

Apart from this to gauge the customer attitudes surveys are conducted through questionnaires once in every 2 to 4 years

Q3. How do you carry out your sales forecasting

From the results of customer surveys and the large database available with the company forecasting becomes easier. Also Parachute is a long standing brand which has been there in the market for very long (about 25 yrs) so the trends for seasonal variations in sales and other such trends are fairly well known to us.

Q4. How do you compare yourself with your direct and indirect competitors?

Indirect competitors could be anyone from creams to shampoos etc. We focus on delivering products according to changing consumer needs

Q5. Are you ahead of your competitors in terms of product innovation and new product launches?

We innovate products depending on what consumer needs are. For the more urban consumer concerned with imagery of product, we have introduced Parachute Advansed. To meet the needs of consumers having hair fall, we have Parachute Therapie and for those particular about smell we have Parachute Jasmine and so on. So we innovate in accordance with consumer needs and not due to competitors.

Q6. What is the role and importance of advertising in your brand building activity?

Advertising is very important for any product to build up its brand image and so is the case for parachute.

Q7. What are the strategic plans for the future regarding your brand (launch into new geographical regions/launch of variants etc.)

We are almost everywhere where there is a demand. We are in the Gulf, Bangladesh, South-East, Egypt, and UAE. Launch of variants will depend upon the changing customer needs.

Q8. What are the challenges you face as a brand manager?

Our major challenge is continuously varying consumer needs and we face this through constantly introducing variants in our products.

Q9. Who are your biggest competitors?

Parachute Coconut Hair Oil is the market leader with over 50% market share. The closest competitor is Nihar which is owned by Marico itself, then it is Shalimar and we have VVD as our biggest competitor in AP and Tamil Nadu. However these brands are giving completion locally and not at all the national level.

Q10. Does the market share vary greatly in rural and urban areas?

Like for any other product Parachute's market share also varies from urban to rural market. The share is definitely more in urban areas due to greater exposure to advertisements and larger incomes.

Q11. So what are the strategies followed in rural areas to increase the market share?

In rural areas, Activation Programmes are conducted through which awareness is created on how using a branded coconut oil is better and more helpful than using loose oil which could be impure.

Also since televisions do not have as high penetration as in urban areas, advertising is also done through wall paintings, newspaper inserts etc.

And in North, usually Amla oil is preferred for hair so Marico has Shanti Badam Amla to cater to those needs.

Q14. Do you think Parachute Advansed is eating into the share of parachute coconut oil?

No, each has its own market. While parachute coconut oil is positioned as a pure edible grade coconut oil, Parachute Advansed it targeted at a different customer who is more conscious of smell of oil and who would prefer better perfumed oil along with coconut oil.

Q15. We don't see the advertisements for Parachute Coconut Hair Oil as such. So what is the advertising strategy then?

When we advertise for Parachute Advansed, we are not just advertising Parachute Advansed but the entire brand PARACHUTE. So it automatically advertises Parachute Coconut Hair Oil. So there are no advertisements for Parachute Coconut Hair Oil as such.
