MBL is one of the popular 'A' category commercial bank in Nepal providing its full fledged personal and corporate banking services nationwide. The marketing plan of MBL which is being addressed will develop a detailed framework on how to increase the positive competitive pressure in the market in terms of personal banking and will also gives strategies on how the positive factors can be streamlined to overcome the negative issues. 1.6 Control

After the planning is done and implemented, control over the plan needs to be undertaken. The control is required to perform in order to find out what is the results and what can happen with this whether it is positive impact or negative impact. There should be some mechanisms to find out whether the plan is being productive or not. Similarly, marketing plan is the series of tasks to perform which would help any organization to grow. It is a simple report that helps into understand the tasks and accomplish it.

2.0.1 Marketing Audit as a part of Marketing planning process to MBL:

The marketing audit and marketing planning process are both integral part as without one the other part is incomplete. The importance of marketing audit can be forecasted by conceptual and practical perspectives. Conceptually, the marketing audit is the key path for to develop the marketing plan. Westwood (2002) says It is used to describe the methods of applying marketing resources to meet the objectives. Without a proper marketing audit, the development of a proper marketing plan is reluctant. Practically, the marketing audit is important and is an important part of the marketing planning process because the marketing audit is the tool to know what is to be planned. E.g. To make a project successful, the resources, budget and time are required to be allocated, however to understand what resources, how much budget and how much time are required an analysis or audit needs to be undertaken.

In regards, to MBL the audit had analyzed a clear projection of the current status, internal and external, micro and macro environment. A clear concept had been generated upon the current status of the company and the status from different view lines. The marketing audit has been performed not solely by only one model or frameworks but using various other models and frameworks to find out the key components of different aspects. The audit has indeed helped a lot to understand MBL's picture in the form of various analysis. An understanding of the strengths and weakness, core Competitive, barriers for being the market leader etc, had been generated which thus had helped to understand the current status of MBL. Pahl and Richter (2007) says it is influenced by various internal factors as material and human resources, internal immaterial resources etc. Also, without a proper audit, the need of new changes and adoption of new strategy would have merely been possible. It is of course undaunted and unnecessary to have the same planning as the time changes and so is the needs and demands of the customers. Thus the audit had projected the needs and the right pathway about the marketing plan.

The market auditing process was very vague and didn't cover large sector of internal and external environment. The major difficulties on to gather information and analysis was majorly in external or macro environment which I experienced. Since, Nepal is more likely politically unstable, it is unsure that what changes might happen. The nation frequently followed by riots, political issues, disagreement between labour and trade unions etc. makes the major industry of Nepal including banking in dilemma. Thus, the problem on gathering the right information of external environment of MBL was bit difficult because of lack of full conformity and I couldn't find out what exactly is happening on to the day to day activities because of these unwanted incidents happening in the nation. Also, the frequent changing of rules and regulations of NRB, MBL needs to regularly change its business tactics and how it operates causing the analysis slightly more harder. Internally, the problems were very less in comparison to external environment as the internal environment is within the control of the managing bodies which I experienced in collecting information as the internal environment were well managed.

2.1 Marketing Planning as benefactor for MBL

Marketing planning is a process of analysis, strategy creation and action at the heart of organizational survival and longer-term success. Simkin and Dibb (2008) The marketing plan of MBL is prepared in recognition of both internal and external analysis. The bank would be then benefit by high number of customers meaning high number of deposits, loans and advances, commissions as well as goodwill in the market.

- To launch the facility of opening account for foreign nationals.

The expected results from this plan is to increase the foreign currency transactions as well as building up the services range internationally. The segmentation is done according to the regions as Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara and Birgunj because these are the major modernized and industralised cities where the scope of the business are high. Major customers would be readily available where the new services are generated. This area is much more targeted as MBL can get high volume of customers from this area from the following age group.

Demographic segmentation:

The segmentation is done on the basis of age and sex. These segments could be classified into children, youths and adults and pensioners. The segmentation would help into determine various types of customers thus resulting them into different services. Hence, it is important that the demography needs to be considered while doing segmentation.

The differentiated strategy should be used in to target the customers as the major customers of MBL are different and are not fixed to only one. To maintain the customer's needs, it is vital that MBL needs to create different plans and strategy for different customers. E.g. Scholarship programs for children, students, credit and various banking facilities for youths, adults and retirement plans for old age peoples. The differentiation needs to be done so as to gain customer attractiveness of different age groups, sex and occupations.

The segmentation and targeting strategy will position MBL to be the bank that cares for its customers. With its slogan 'Service with personal touch', MBL is positioned to be the bank that provides professional service to its customers. The repositioning strategy needs to be followed do that a consideration on the basis of Competitive, consistency and clarity on the services can be obtained. A strong brand position in the market is also drawn upon the students and children for providing scholarship services which are the major need for those segments, credit facility for adults and retirement plans for old age peoples resulting MBL to position as the trustworthy and professional brand image in Nepal.

Various recommendations can be drawn as considering international customers to be potential segments and targeting them with concentrated strategy. This would include providing concentrated services where only one marketing mix is used. This would help much into smaller markets where the mix tends to highly focused. Also, people from abroad can also use banking services in Nepal and manage their accounts from abroad. However, the limitation of this recommendation is it can only be possible when an approval from NRB is gathered. Thus, without the approval this strategy is next to impossible. Also, the strategy would only cover the new and existing customers but doesn't concerns with customers who are with competitors.

2.2.2 Porter's Generic Strategies:

Porter's Generic Strategies would describe the major issues on how to grow the market and increase the Competitive pressure in the market. However it is not clear for small companies which can't sell their products on differentiation. Campbell et al (1999) MBL could use this strategy as this deals not only upon the existing and new customers but also the customers who are with the competitors. The major constraints that could be used are Cost leadership and differentiation.

Cost leadership means making the costs similar to of the competitors. It is very much likely that customers would prefer to have the quality services in cheaper prices. Thus, MBL could segment this by premium customers with added facilities, normal customers with limited facilities and budget customers with simple facilities. E.g. Natwest in UK follows the same strategy of cost leadership. It have various forms of account services to different groups as premium customers as high level residents of UK, normal customers as Low level residents of UK and budget customers as international students. Thus the bank have target different segments with different costs and services.

Differentiation is another important strategy to be followed. It is very much common that every people would prefer to have uncommon or different services in affordable rates. MBL could use this strategy to segment various types of customers of different age groups. They may be childrens, adults, old age peoples, corporate clients etc. It is very important that the differentiation strategy should be formulated and targeted to the various groups so as to increase the turnover for the business and increase the level and range of operations. This strategy is positioned in the plan so as to gain more customers and increase the leadership in the market. Also, the positioning can be successful when the products are properly promoted and priced so as to gain leadership in the market.

MBL could use to differentiate its cost to different targeted segments and provide services in affordable prices however the limitation of this recommendation is MBL couldn't fix the taxation and VAT as this is done by Government of Nepal. This is the only limitation which couldn't make MBL to fix costs on financial services however different services to different customers relevant to different constraints can be done.

2.2.3 Evaluation of performance:

The evaluation of the performance of the plan should be done in order to know whether the plan is working well or not. The evaluation of performance can be determined upon the achievement of the plan. The plan is developed so as to grow the revenue and turnover of the company. The financial analysis of the performance would also show how is the new plan working out and how much income is being obtained from it. E.g. With the plan to launch credit cards, the financial analysis to evaluate the performance could be finding out the number of transactions done, commission earned to the company etc.

However the limitations of the financial evaluation only results on to knowing the figures or amounts. It may be just on profits and how much customers are using this service. This would not determine whether customers are really liking these services as they may be using these services because they don't have any alternatives. This can be remedied with regular market research of the product usage, feedbacks on it can be collected in terms of questionnaires, public polls, forums etc. This would determine whether the plan is working our or not and the performance can be measured through it. The customers would also drop their suggestions on to it and to increase the performance level.

2.3 Implementation - Possible Issues:

With the development of plans and the process of implementing these plans, various problems may encounter for MBL because of various issues as follows:

- With the instability of political situation of Nepal, it is very much unlikely that any new plans will easily be formulated. Because of the increasing riots, insecurity and political issues, people are more conscious for them to establish a peaceful life rather than expressing its interests in to new products. Thus this might result in to less customer interests upon MBL's products and services resulting loss in the business.

- Various legal issues might raise in terms of NRB while developing a plan of permitting foreign nationals to open account as a development plan. This might lead in to the plan to be failed or postponed. Hence, this would cause to loss in money, time and efforts to MBL.

- The other barrier would be time frame. With the rapid advancement of technology and the demands of public, it is not much likely that the long term plan which has been formulated will work out that time as the technology will be advanced and the demands of the customers will increase. This will result into increasing budget for new technology for MBL.

2.3.1 Remedies:

To overcome these possible problems various remedies needs to be taken in consideration for the plan to be unsuccessful as follows:

- Contingency planning needs to be undertaken. This will ensure that disaster recovery plan is in place and if the plan fails immediate action can be done to cover up the losses.

- Provision of staff work force and proper training as staff development, rules and regulations etc. needs to be undertaken so as the staff who are involved on the plan are fully aware of the possible outputs of it.

- Legal agreements needs to be undertaken before the plan can take in place so as no legal problems may arise in future.

2.4 Conclusion and Recommendations:

The competitive strategy and the plan would play an important role in to gain the competititive advantage in the market. A conclusion can be drawn that with the proper plan and projection of the competitive strategy, it is expected that MBL would have a positive returns with overcoming the barriers in the market in the form of competitions. Also, the monopoly in the market would be strengthened if the plan is properly implemented and considerable barriers are pointed out to solve.

However, it is recommended that an additional backup plan is to be initiated so that if Plan A fails Plan B can be operated. This would therefore prevent into the loss of time, money and effort if such issues happens so. This is vital when the competition is increasing and the stability of any industry is fluctuating day by day. This would thus help in to get positive results even if any internal or external environmental factors goes wrong.
