Speedo is one of the leading brands in swim wear. Founded in 1910, in Australia by a young Scottish entrepreneur Alexander MacRae. Initially known as MacRae Knitting mills, the company was into undergarment business and due to the mounting response from Australian beach comers, MacRae integrated swimwear in his business.

In 1920 swimwear popularity rose quickly because of the inclusion of swimming as a sport and mixed bathing. In 1928 they introduced a new model swimwear called "Racerback" outfit, which made the swimmers to swim faster. A new slogan was generated "Speed on in your Speedos" and the catchword became fashionable and finally a new name "Speedo" was coined.

In 1951 Speedo Knitting Mills (Holdings) Ltd was integrated and turned into a public company (Sydney Stock exchange). Speedo is the front runner in innovation in the competitive swimwear industry. This is evident from their history. They were the first company to study aquatic creatures to create a replica in their suits. Innovation was the main reason for them to market their product successfully. But Speedo has a unique marketing strategy for their products which they first formulated in the 50's "THE OLYMPICS". Recently the Vice President of Speedo for marketing, Craig Brommers, said "We use the Olympics as the springboard to talk about our products". But why the Olympics? Speedo has been continuous in the spot light in Olympics for the last 50 years because of the stunning performance of Speedo suits. They have understood the importance and benefit of advertising their product in this situation as the eyes of the whole world is set there. They have been highly successful in this strategy. During Olympics even Nike sponsored swim athletes acknowledged to the successful advertising campaign of Speedo. Nike swimmers wore a Nike suit called Amp but couldn't perform well than Speedo swimmers. Nike sponsored top ranking athlete Myers said Speedo suit has received more exposure than Nike. Three time gold medallists and Nike sponsored Hansen said Swimmers are tricked into thinking the Speedo suit is superior. That's how Nike sells millions and millions of shoes. Speedo has extended the sponsorship agreement of all its swimmers till 2013 to cover the upcoming Olympics in London in 2012.

Speedo has dominated the US $200 million performance swimwear market globally commanding nearly 70% of the market share, with Tyr in second place and apparel manufacturer Nike Corp. the No. 3 seller in the elite swimsuit category, pulled out of the market completely last year. Nike Inc withdrew from the performance swimwear industry unable to catch up with the Speedo dominance in the sector. In September 2008, US-based sportswear manufacturer Nike Inc. announced its decision to exit the elite swimwear market, saying, "We will not invest in next-generation swim innovation, which is not in line with our stated category growth strategy."Though Nike denied it but marketing experts conclude that the move was due to the unprecedented success of Speedo and its growing dominance in the performanceswimwear category

In the past few years since Speedo has been taken by Pentland group Speedo widened its product portfolio and entered into commercial wear. The major marketing move done after its takeover was to reactivate the junior swimwear division, which had been dormant for years. This was a very successful move as teens turned out to be the most prolific buyers of swim apparel, purchasing 35 percent of all swimsuits sold. Speedo entered into advertising for its commercial wear segment year 2004. They spent $1000000 in ad as per Neilson Monitor plus. (Brand week Monday, March 8 2004). Also massive AD campaign featuring green tinted images of athletes with glowing yellow eyes portrays the swimmers as futuristic superheroes was also done . Negative Impact of Marketing

Even though Speedo products dominate the market with more than 70% share in the competitive swimwear, Speedo major product LZR Racer have been out of stock for such a long time, making their customer base switching to other optional products. Delivery is taking longer for Speedo USA since there is only one factory supplying the whole world with the LZR Racer. LZR Racer is a product in which Speedo has invested millions of dollars in research and development and the main motto of the company is to recover the cost at the earliest by selling more pieces before the competitors replicate the technology their by losing its uniqueness. But Speedo has created a demand in the market which will only create a negative impact in the funds. Competitors of Speedo, TYR came out with a similar replica of LZR called Tracer Rise and Arena came up with R-evolution. TYR suit features heavier material than LZR that provides additional support and the Arena suit is five grams lighter than the LZR. Speedo eventually lost a portion of the market share there by unable to recover the R&D costs. If Speedo made the product delivery on time by creating a balance between demand and production they could have simply made a handsome profit. The main cause was the manufacturing facility of LZR Racer was only done in the US facility.

Speedo has been highly successful in competitive swimwear globally but more than 40% of its turnover is generated in the US market alone. Speedo needs to expand itself to other countries to reduce business risk as the company will be vulnerable if the US market erodes. Speedo competitors like Nike, Adidas have this competitive advantage over Speedo as they are operational in almost all the countries generating folds of turnover than Speedo and it is what finally that matters at the end of the day when it comes to business. Also Speedo has not been as widened in terms of products, marketing and advertising when compared to competitors. Speedo has not entered the fastest growing economy in the world, the Asian economy which has both the predicted future economic powers China and India with a whooping 2.5 billion population. Already Competitors like Nike, Adidas has been successfully settled in these markets.

CONCLUSION

Speedo International Ltd has undergone several changes in the recent years after being taken over by The Pentland Group. It has created the world's fastest suit, acquired more than half of the market share in performance swimwear and has been putting heavy investments in research and development to innovate newer products. Speedo also has stepped into commercial wear segment by introducing Axcelerate, started brand franchising with other companies etc. Speedo has gone a long way ahead of its competitors in terms of technology but needs to concentrate on their commercial wear which can cover a wider customer base like its competitors. Expansion of its business to other countries will help Speedo to generate more turnovers without relying on the US market alone.

Better manufacturing facility and good channel delivery system has to maintained to get the best out of all the initial efforts. Speedo has been implementing a lot of new strategies recently for the wider plan like shifting its headquarters to UK and also keeping deals with business consultancy firms. Advertising campaigns, new digital marketing department are all Speedo's strategy for getting more business through entering more markets with a wide range of products
