An arrangement of many elements that can be links or nodes, system device etc. Physical implementation on connectivity of different devices which has physical standards. Basically it is the structure of a network.

Various components can be placed on the network by physical network with regard in device location and installation of cables.

Whereas, logical network shows the flows of data in a network without its physical appearance.

Physical Topology:

The arrangement of a network in cabling is known as physical topology.

Logical Topology:

The path in where the data travels between computer devices in a network.

Topologies:

Physical implementation on connectivity of different devices which has physical standards.

Types of Topologies:

Bus Topology

Ring Topology

Star Topology

Mesh Topology

Tree Topology

Bus Topology:

Single segment topology also known Bus topology. A shared communication medium is used. All the devices are connected through an interface connector. In this type of network, a single message can travel at a time. If any device wants to communicate to another device; a broadcast message is being sent onto the wires which are seen by all the other devices. Once a device receives the request it has a right to accept the message and processes it.

Advantage:

It’s easy to install, setup and expend the network

Excellent for small network as well as LAN

Cost that consumes are less

Disadvantage:

Central cable length has a limit

Maintaining the cost is high

Not appropriate for big networks

Less secure

Ring Topology:

Message travels in one direction which could be clockwise or counter clockwise. If failure occurs in any device, cables or if the loop is disturbed and broken; it takes the whole network down. It is one-way traffic.

Advantage:

Connectivity does not need an extra server to control it

A fully organised topology

Performance of a network is not affected by additional components

The device uses resources equally

Disadvantage:

They are mainly dependent on wires

If failure occurs in any device, whole network goes down

More expensive if compared to bus topology

Star Topology:

This network makes a use of centralized device i.e. a hub or a switch or a router which transmits and processes the signals. All devices are connected with central node, indirectly or directly. The transmission lines between devices in this topology forms a star topology.

Advantage:

If failure occurs to any of the device, the other device is not affected

Easy to install a new device

Has better performance

Easy monitoring

Disadvantage:

Devices are dependent on central device

Using of central device increases the cost

Mesh Topology:

It’s a network in which all the nodes or devices are connected to each other. In this type of network, signals have several routes or paths to travel from one source to destination.

Advantage:

Network is not affected if failure occurs to any device

Any device have the ability to send data

Disadvantage:

Setting up and managing of this network is difficult

Network is costly

Tree Topology:

Tree topology design is created by two of the topologies i.e. bus and star topology together.

Advantages:

Good for setting up a big network

Easy to mange, expand or remove

Disadvantage:

Network is dependent on central hub

Extremely big for default network

Networking:

Connectivity and communication between two or more devices through wires or wireless medium.

Medium:

Transmission of a medium is classified into the following two types:

Wired technologies

Wireless technologies

Wired / Guided Medium:

Data or waves that travel in a solid transmission media in the form of cables.

Wired Medium has different types of cable which are as follows:

Coaxial Cable:

coax.jpg

Advantages:

Frequency range is sufficient which enables multiple channel support

The faraday shield holds an inner conductor inside of it which lowers the error rate. Immunity of noise are improved, therefore coax gives better performance than twisted pair cable.

Noise and crosstalk are reduced in amplifiers coax’s cable due to greater spacing between them

Amplifiers in coax can be placed farther which in case of twisted pair cable cannot be possible

Disadvantage:

Cable issues: It becomes difficult to work on thicker cable, because the thickest the cable is, the more difficult to work with

Installing is more expensive than twisted pair cable

Shielded Twisted Pair:

New Bitmap Image (2).bmp

Advantage:

It is similar to as UTP cable but has shielded foiled wrapped covering which protects the signals from any outside interference

STP is expensive than UTP cable but has a high transmission rating over long distance

Used by IBM token which are ring networks

Disadvantage:

It has less distance coverage and difficult to work with

It is physically larger in size

More expensive than UTP

Connecting STP to terminating block is difficult

Unshielded Twisted Pair:

STP UTP.jpg

Advantages:

Are relatively low cost and widely available

Easy to install and setup

Expense is less than STP cables

Are known Fastest copper base medium

Disadvantages:

Are susceptible to Radio frequency waves and electromagnetic interference

Has limited distance coverage

The signals which are being transmitting through UTP cables can leak to nearby cables

It has a low bandwidth approximately 3000Hz

Fiber Optic Cable:

Fiber-Optic-Cable-Loose-Tube-Layer-Stranded-Optical-Fiber-Cable-armored-.jpg

Advantage:

Capacity and bandwidth are increased, as well as system performance

Is immune to electrical noise and EMI electromagnetic interference, and RFI radio frequency interference

At harsh environment it is less restrictive

System cost is most expensive

Disadvantage:

The fiber components are expensive

Receivers and transmitters of fiber optic are expensive as electrical interface

The standard which are being used in the industry has made fiber optical acceptance limited

Wireless Medium:

Transmission of waves without any interaction of physical media. For example (infra-ed waves, radio waves or frequencies, microwaves, satellite etc).

In wireless medium the deployment of data is faster and less cost effective than as installing cables. It is also beneficial in such a way where cables cannot be placed due to weather or environment factors. Hence wireless medium can work in these circumstances because it is purely dependent on the signals or waves.

Recommendation for Topology and Medium:

The call centre company is providing several services to large client companies. Therefore a use of star topology is recommended due to the following reasons:

In star topology nodes are connected to central device which can be hub, switch or a router, whereas in bus topology central cable is used to connect all the nodes or links to it

Unlike bus topology, signals does not travels to all devices, a central device transmits signal to nodes after 2 to 3 devices or links

Failure does not has an effect on entire network, If in case failure occurs to any nodes in a network

Easy to troubleshoot the failure

Data in star topology travels from a central device to a desired destination

Central device acts as a junction, that connects different nodes and can works with different central devices

Central device can also be used as a signal booster or a repeater

For this type of network, it is recommended to use fiber optic cable which is appropriate for a call centre company because the call centre company is providing several services to large client companies. The ease of use with maximum bandwidth and capacity as well as system performance. As companies require a secure network, fiber optic cable is being the most secured and has coverage over long distances. Fiber optic cable is immune to electrical noise, electromagnetic interference, and radio frequency interference. Therefore the use of fiber optic cable is essential.

In this diagram it describes the internal building infrastructure that a call centre company will have.

Task.2

High Speed internet connection for voice system (telephone) and electronic data which are email, communication among staff users in a department and web browsing etc.

High speed internet connections are of different types which are mentioned below:

Fibre Optic Cable

ADSL

Tier1 (Tier 1)

Bandwidth (upstream & downstream)

Call Centre Company can expect 500 simultaneous calls at a given time. Therefore, we need a more robust internet connection to carry out this activity.

Connect several computers to the internet by a secure, ADSL which is a high speed internet. Making the use of optical fiber cable as stated earlier in Task 1, due to its excellence and high speed transmitting data over long distances. Bandwidth plays an important role about how strong the internet speed is. Should be approximately 0.5 Mbps or 512 kbps a user , A company like call centre providing various services to large client companies that means every activity that has being dependent on the internet i.e. online registration of clients.

Requirements for Voice:

The call centre has 500 employees who are receiving and making calls for clients. Each call would have 35 kbps standard fidelity or 87 kbps maximum fidelity, by using Hosted PBX Service. Therefore the voice requirement would be 43.5 Mbps for maximum fidelity and 17.5 Mbps for standard fidelity.

Task.3

The Main Equipment to be installed:

PABX known as Private Automated Branch Exchange. It’s a telephone network used by call centres and also by other organisations. PABX has a single access number which allows multiple lines for the callers from outside and provides external lines to communicate with internal staff.

It is also beneficial in such a way that reduces expenses caused in long distances and offering voice & data to be used on a IP system on a single network, which reduces the cost and gives improved performance and mobility. PABX enables to give more function, reliability and uses less resource.

Necessary Equipments for IP PABX System:

Appliances: In an organisation all the telephone devices are connected through wires with PABX system and the entire network (telephone) is connected to PABX switch.

Telephone Systems: The call centre company requires phone devices that are placed in offices for the staff to communicate with clients. For conference purposes, conference phones are required. Phone devices which can be phone sets or a computer. Phone devices or computer station works as phone terminal.

Implementation of a Network:

Once the equipment of hardware is implemented, the next activity is to setup software application on the system machines.

Integration of different telephone numbers for different clients:

IVR/ACD Phone System:

IVR interactive voice response comprises of modern industrial quality PC window with dialogic computer telephony cards. This when combines with extensive IVR software, phone systems perform virtually types of inbound call distribution.

Wizard and Pacer systems of phone support both digital and analog phone lines but share the same answering software features.

Ability to Direct Callers to Different Department:

An IVR application functions in client’s server environment. It runs on program either on IVR phone system or on a different server which is progressing on client’s application program.

On receiving a call, DSC phone system uses DNIS to check for an IVR script. The IVR customer process invokes server process on application server and two way communication starts with IVR server.

The IVR program controls the IVR script flow by prompting the caller, requesting key input & directing caller to another extension, DNIS or voicemail. In this process an IVR program perform application functions like report generation or customer information lookup.

Total Cost $17547

Recommendation:

It is decided to use Toshiba IP communication system CIX670 for a call centre company. It provides support for more than 500 users. As per scenario, the call centre company will have 500 employees.

Cost of Operation the System:

The cost for selected communication system is costly, Due to its advanced technology that reduces the costs which could happen in future. Since the call centre company uses an IP system, calls made within the company are free of cost. The devices installed within the company have free maintenance as well as warranty offered by third parties.

The table below illustrates the cost of operating the system:

Sr. No

Recommendation:

I have chosen telephone system of Toshiba IP communication Strata CIX670. The recommended system is costly. However, it recovers the cost by giving great performances, reliability and maximum duration. The PABX system which we have installed has many benefits, for example the data and voice on a single network, used on communication IP system that provides mobility and budget saving. Since the call centre company uses an IP system, the calls within the company are free of cost. The IP and automated switching does not require assistance support. The installed devices include warranties given by third parties.

The above mentioned analysis and benefits of operating the system.

Task.4

Integrated Telephone System and Computer System:

Systems which are available in my region usually used by many big organization i.e. ‘Computer Telephone Integrated Software’. It is a combination of computer and telephony software integration. It is also known as telephone and computer software, a product which enables the computers to control phone functions such as making calls and receiving voice, fax and data calls, telephone directory services, caller identification etc. Integration of computer and telephone software is a major development in the evolution of automated office.

Equipment and Software Requirement:

Computer telephone Integrated software equipment and software requirement is the phone system from database system corporation which is the state of art whereas computer phone system which handles outbound and inbound phone calls to organizations. This system supports both analog and digital phone lines configures from 1 analog line to 1000 digital lines.

The system requirements are:

Inbound CTI phone system

Outbound CTI phone system

Blended CTI phone system

Comprehensive Software Features:

The inbound, outbound and blended CTI phone system uses automatic call distribution (ACD) and interactive voice response system (IVR). The features used in this system are:

Launch PC/Web application

Caller identification/ Caller Number Identification

IVR Information Collector

Automated dialling of outgoing calls

Online reporting

Recommendations:

My recommendation would be Computer Telephony Integration CTI software because it’s a rich set of phone system enabling application programs to control phone and computer system. It increases employee productivity, reduce cost and enhance customer service with the robust phone system.

Task.5

Preventions and Countermeasures to secure network:

Education:

Staff employees or members new or acquired department especially the ones those are directly touched onto customers and member verification, authentication are needed to be trained about information policies and procedures.

Authentication:

Branch staff and call centre staff should always consistently challenge and pose quick response

Verification – Out of band:

Certain transaction should have restriction and limited until authorized call back confirmation is received for the transaction or account change

Voice Biometrics:

Technology which detects voices or voice patterns, is not perfect but it can still provide an additional coverage as security of user authentication

Task.6

Summary:

In this assignment I have made a plan for a call centre company installing of new network system for voice communication. Added the right topologies for operating the network. And selected the suitable Internet Service Provider for providing the services to telephones and computer system at affordable operating cost. On the basis of medium, that transmit the data I have chosen the suitable media (Cables) and furthermore the prevention of any loss, damage caused and threat; for that provided the countermeasures to secure the network.

Task one has different topologies. I have stated the advantages and disadvantages of different mediums. The advice for topology is star topology whereas the medium chosen is Fibre optic Cable.

Task two has a list of internet services that are required and the connection speeds suitable for the network. Have explained two different ISP available in my country i.e. ETISALAT and DU. Recommended to opt for Etisalat Elife Double Play package which is suitable for the network and their network is widely covered in the region.

Task three consists of different telephone systems for a business like call centre. I have mentioned PABX system to be used in the network because of its cost and the features. The total cost of equipment and installation is $17547. Whereas, the operating cost for the system is $2316 respectively. Furthermore, the system to be used is Toshiba IP Communication system Strata CIX670. The reason for this recommendation is that it provides great performance, reliability, adaptability and mobility and maximum duration.

Task four reviews on investigating the system available in my country which uses integrated telephone and computer system. Automated for making automated marketing calls. Research on equipment, software and features used in integrated telephone and computer system by providing a reasonable recommendation for choosing the system.

Task give consists of the threats that can have a affect on the network. Whiles the countermeasures are pushed to place in an organisation to secure the network.

Apart from all these setups, the company can provide its employees and customers within the office a facility to have access to internet or wifi.
