The James Madison University History

The big news in Harrisonburg in 1908 was the opening of the State Normal and Industrial School for Women there. That school now known as James Madison University, today is a coeducational comprehensive university with an enrollment of more than 17,500 students, which is committed to preparing students to be educated and enlightened citizens who lead productive and meaningful lives.

The institution opened its doors to its first student body in 1909 with a total enrollment of 209 students, 15 faculty members and Julian Ashby Burruss serving as president. Twenty graduates received diplomas in 1911.

A name change to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg came in 1914. The authority to award bachelor's degrees came shortly after in 1916. It was also during these exciting days that the campus plan was established and six buildings were built on the Quad.Another name change State Teachers College at Harrisonburg came in 1924. The college continued under that name until 1938, when it was renamed Madison College to honor the Father of the Constitution and fourth U.S. President James Madison. The final name change to James Madison University came in 1977.

Samuel Page Duke became second president in 1919 after Burruss left for another position. Nine major buildings were built on campus during his administration.

Men were first enrolled as regular day students in 1946. After Duke retired, G. Tyler Miller was named the institution's third president in 1949. From 1949 to 1970, campus grew by 240 acres and 19 new buildings. Major curriculum changes were also made and, in 1954, Madison received authorization to grant master's degrees.

By action of the Virginia General Assembly in 1966, Madison became a coeducational institution. Fourth president Ronald E. Carrier headed the institution from 1971 to 1998. During Carrier's administration, student enrollment and the number of faculty and staff members tripled, doctoral programs were authorized, more than 20 major campus buildings were constructed, and national publications repeatedly recognized James Madison University as one of the finest institutions of its type in America.

As the institution celebrates its centennial, Linwood H. Rose marks 10 years as Madison's fifth president. Since September 1998 he has successfully led James Madison University into a position of national prominence. Special thanks to "Elaine Stroupe"

System Background

I am choose the Computer registration system in JMU library and what is system background:

Computer registration is the process by which computing equipment connected to the JMU network is associated with the individuals responsible for that equipment. This information is necessary for effective network management. Computer Registration is required for faculty, staff, students, and affiliates using computers connected via ethernet cables on the JMU campus. The Computer Registration process is a browser driven technology performed by opening a web browser.The Computer Registration process is driven by a product from Cisco.

All computers are required to register every 30 days. This is to ensure the integrity of the information in the database.Because we realize that the expiration of a registration may cause a disruption to work we have added 14 hours to the 30 days to help move the expiration into the evening when users are less likely to experience a disruption. What this means is that if you register your computer at 7:45am your registration will expire 30 days later at 9:45pm.

Accurate computer registration provides a foundation for managing the complex information technology infrastructure upon which we all increasingly rely. It is vital for effective response to the rapid increasing security threats we are facing today. The Computer Registration system is implemented by actually placing registration servers between the users and the rest of the campus network.

In this model the load during peak registration times is distributed across all 11 individual servers that are supporting the Computer Registration application.

Vendors/Background

The Computer Registration system has been implemented campuswide on 11 individual servers deployed throughout the campus network. This means that anytime you move around campus with your laptop, and connect your laptop into a wall jack, you will be required to register. As an example a faculty member from Duke Hall who takes their laptop to a classroom in CISAT, and plugs into a wall jack, will be required to register before accessing the network, but this will NOT replace their registration in Duke Hall. There is no limit to the number of computers you can register. The Computer Registration system will NOT be implemented for users of the Wireless Network. The Wireless Network utilizes the VPN client which serves as both a registration and authentication tool.

How To Register a Computer to the JMU Network

Any computer that connects to the JMU Network by an Ethernet cable will need to be registered before having full internet access. If you cannot register your computer because your eID password expired, or you do not know your password, you can go to the accounts portal by typing Accounts.jmu.edu in the address bar. Without the computer being registered, the only website that can be accessed is the Computing Accounts Portal.

Open any web browser. You will be redirected to the Computer Registration webpage.

If you do not get redirected, try to refresh the webpage, or open a new tab.

Enter in your eID, eID password, and Affiliation to JMU. Once registered, you should have internet access for the next 30 days.

You should see a webpage that confirms that you have successfully registered the computer.

Indications that the computer you are using is not Registered to the JMU Network

Microsoft Outlook

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, look to see if you are connected to the exchange server. Also check the last time your folder was updated.

You may also get a Security Alert pop up. This shows that you cannot fully access the

exchange server

A pop-up will ask if you want to allow the registration web page to open. Select Yes, and proceed with registration.

Firefox

If you are not immediately redirected to the registration webpage, then try to reload the page, or open a new tab.

Every information agencies need system and technologies in managing the organization. This is the reason why they need Compuer Regitraion system in JMU library.

The government agencies need a system to help and enable them to function smoothly, efficiency, effectively in order to successfully achieve its goals to provide a excellent service to the staff, students and so on.

To complete a task with easy way by using this system to find information.

To communicate with other people to know something new.

To exchange of information from other library.

To help how to register a computer to the JMU Network to other people.

The systems can easier to staff, students, and affiliates using computers connected via ethernet cables on the JMU campus and also the users in using technologies to get or produce information or knowledge.

To help students to more understand why computer registration is need to their and know about the use system with good.

Functionality/Efficiency

Students can access the computer registration system using any computer connected to the Internet and equipped with a web browser.

Once they are logged in (e-ID and Possword), they can add, drop, and exchange classes.

They can also view their weekly schedule in tabular form.

At 7:45am registration will expire 30 days later at 9:45pm.

Register a group of attendees at one time to streamline the registration process.

The Computer Registration system is implemented by actually placing registration servers between the users and the rest of the campus network.

Any faculty or staff member should register the computer with immediately and a campus map will be displayed detailing the location of each of their classes.

The registration system allows labs and other specialized facilities to be exempted from the registration process.

Administration would also be able to make changes to the registration database, and they will be able to place stipulations on registration, particularly adjusting the maximum credit hours a student can take.

A security issue on one computer poses significant security risks on all computers connected to the JMU network.

Computers are moved and repurposed often on campus, and a 30-day registration interval allows us to keep more up to date information.

Every system has their own advantages and disadvantages in helping the information agencies.

Advantages of Using Computer Regestration System.

Where user or anyone who use this system can use this system for free without paying but all computers are required to register every 30 days. This is to ensure the integrity of the information in the database.

User can get all the support of the system.

This is easily user only need to registration system then the user can get the support of the system.

Easy to registration.

Enable the users to communicate with the authority through the "on line ", concerning matters/subject of interest and this provide efficient and reduce process registration time.

Disadvantage of Using Computer Regestration System.

Need to have internet connection and browser.

Complicated users system.

Most systems are not intuitive or user friendly.

Require content and technical expertise.

The Computer registration system need to hire someone who experts and have experience in using computer.

Can be affected by unwanted virus.

Not all system is safe from virus; they can be affected by virus because it been used by many library.

Can be difficult if the person having problem with their registration .

The registration proses not active.

You should register before use it.

The Computer Registration system will NOT be implemented for users of the Wireless Network

Opinion

In my opinion, the computer registration system, it can attract of the users to learn more about the information use computer registration. Then, this system helps a lot of communication with people that know about system. This system really helps to other people to know something with latest information technology or system also. JMU is one of university that use computer registration system to help student,staff or other users to know about information also all computer system in this University and it as one of example to other university to use a computer registration system with good also interest to users and get right target in system that important to any agencies.

In conclusion, i can concludes that the use of the system or technology in each information agencies will make the place more accurate and good effect and it will speed up the works. The system also important to user to process of data communication is fast or more accurate. Sometimes the system and technology also can bring the problem to us but it can be fixed. However, every systems and technologies have their own weakness. These weakness must be prevent by keep improve the use of IT and find the alternative way to overcome the weakness.
