Abstract

The world is changing rapidly and the contribution of latest technological changes in shaping up the new world is noteworthy. Technology is all around us and the mobile computing is the latest achievement of it which changed the whole scenario of the society. People are getting more and more dependent on technology being used on seconds’ basis. The thought processes as well as the creativity levels have been evolved. The working environments have changed and the implementation of latest technology is the factor nowadays for which everyone is striving. The developments and advancements in mobile computing domain like 3g, 4g and LTE technologies have made the world faster. This has caused a huge generational gap in terms of habits, daily routines, interaction levels etc. the data access and information transmission were an issue in the previous eras but now, in this modern era, the data from all round the glove is on the finger tips of every individual. All of these changes have occurred due to severe dependence and rapid adoption of technological advancements. This paper aims to focus the changes that these recent developments in mobile computing field have caused for students, teachers, researchers, people at work and people from other genres. The positive aspects of the usage and addiction of mobile devices are comprehensively discussed with the support of most relevant and comprehensive literature present. The negative and darker side of social networking is also discussed along with the positive attributes. Introduction

The implication of new technologies has affected almost all walks of life in the modern world and therefore has affected methods for social networking. Similarly, the rise in the social networking accompanied by the huge development in the wireless networking devices and has led to the development of context-aware applications. The geographical location can retrieved on the maps and therefore the social profile supports it. The rise in the usage of the smart phones is one of the reasons for the disruptive change in the usage of computing and cloud devices. The mobile device is known as the one of the fourth largest revolution bring change in the modes of communication, work and social networking. The social networking information was operated by the local cloud devices and therefore enriching the interaction between the user and other networking resources (Gould, 2012, pp. 26-27).

The advancement in the telecommunication media has brought many changes in the methods of communication and social interaction and therefore has advanced the levels of communication and social interaction. This has impact on everything. The launch of 3G/4G technology has made a significant impact on the levels of communication. 3G is the generation of the mobile networking services where as 4G is termed as the 4th generation of mobile networking services that fall under the Mobile Telecommunications specifications and are therefore specified by the International Telecommunication Union (Bauman, 2004, pp. 43 – 49). The application includes many advanced services that gathered and defined the new level of computing in mobile devices. It includes area-wireless voice telephone, mobile Internet access, video calls and mobile TV, all in a mobile environment. These features are accessed to form an integral part of cloud devices and can access all the cloud devices like tablets, laptops etc. (BitDefender, 2010).

With the advancement in the technology of 3G and 4G in the mobile computing the user interface in the social interworking has advanced as well. From the process of traditional keyboard typing, display and tablet it jumped to new and specified interfaces that are based on speech, vision, touch, soft buttons, etc. the advancement in the technology through the 3G and 4G smart phones has made it possible to transfer the data transmission rate from 100megabits per second (Mbps) to 1Gigabit per second (Gbps) (International Data Corporation IDC, 2010). Therefore the faster mode of data transmission was introduced with the advancement in 3G/4G technology. Similarly the advancement in the technologies has also made a great impact on the education, trolling and social networking and interaction. This study further explores the impact of mobile computing on social networking, trolling and education (Gould, 2012, pp 26-27).

Background

The beginning of the new generation phones or smart phones has developed a new era of networking and social interaction leading a step ahead in education, interaction and trolling. The development of the applications in the mobile devices is another fact growing phenomenon. According to a study carried out by eWeek.com the number of mobile internet users in 2009 were 450 million and it was expected to exceed by 1 billion by the end of 2013. The ratio is expected to be double by the end of 2014 (BitDefender, 2010). Introducing many applications on the 3G and 4G phone like android and Windows 7 has created more interests in the users and therefore motivated many people to switch to smart phones. Mobile computing domain has taken breathtaking advancement in the social lives of people through different applications as 55% of mobile internet users use their phones for the purpose of social networking and emailing (World, 2010). This can be observed by the increase in the new profiles no different social networks like Facebook, Twitter, My Space, etc. Therefore, the usage of 3rd generation and 4th generation phones has lead to the development of the simpler and faster data transmission (World, 2010).

The modes of interaction are not only limited to texting and voice chats but has widened to face to face chat through Skype, Fring, Oovoo etc. Consequently, the usage of these applications hand 3G and 4G technological has changed the face of social networking. The advancement can be observed by the usage of devices and application downloads (International Data Corporation IDC, 2010).

Aims and objectives

This dissertation aims to find the impact of mobile computing has made on the social life of people and the process of social networking. Following are the objectives of this dissertation.

To study the impacts of mobile computing on the social networking and the social lives of people, education & trolling.

To study the difference on the technologies like 3g and 4g technologies has made on the process of social networking.

To study the advantages and the disadvantages of mobile computing on the social lives of people.

To study the issues and the challenges faced in mobile computing, that is the security issues and threats.

Research Questions

The research questions in a dissertation helps the researcher to stay focused with the actual aims of the study and does not lose the focus. The main research questions that are formulated for this study are as follow:

What are the impact of mobile computing on the social networking and the social lives of people, education & trolling?

What are the differences made by technologies like 3g and 4g on the process of social networking, education etc ?

What are the advantages and the disadvantages of mobile computing on the social lives of people?

Structure of the study

The study has been divided into five chapters. The study start with the first chapter is based on the introduction. This will include the aims and objectives, background to the study, research questions and introduction to the topic. The second chapter will be based on the theoretical framework or the literature review presented on the study. This will include past researches and raw data on the field. The third chapter will include the methodology carried out to complete the dissertation in order to achieve the aim of the study. The fourth chapter will be based on the analysis and the discussion of the study; this will act as the foundational material that will conclude the study. The chapter will be based on conclusion of the study.

Rationale/ Significance of Study

The social computing or the process of networking is accompanied by the strong relationship between the ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and the popularity and the usage of new devices that are being used to use these technologies. Therefore variety of data and information is accessed and developed and therefore are accompanied by a strong relationship between the ICT devices and application of thses devices (Kumar, 1997, pp. 101-142). In this context, all the new emerging technologies are insured by the inspired social networking implications and stimulate social evolution. Since the usage of these devices is coming across with difference people and population therefore, is being used under diversity depending on their social, cultural and traditional features in different fields.

The mobile computing is challenged by different aspects like the increase in the interaction between individuals, making a clear understanding of dynamism in the social life of different individuals, socially sharing knowledge by also constructing it and providing the helping hand for the individual in order to access the required information irrelevant of the status and geographical location (Druin, 2009, pp 12-19). Consequently, the topic has been under the great significance in the past few years and provided social interest to different researchers enhancing the social sciences. On the other hand, many different professional are also attracted by the growing interest in the field like web entrepreneurs, software and online game vendors.

Therefore the social networking through the mobile computing has developed a new ecosystem feeding all the communication networks and applications development. Social networking and the next generation of handheld devices has not only improved the process of social interaction but has also improved the process of decision-making through efficient, unified communications and location awareness. In other words, the use of mobile computing has created many advantages for the user. There are also many challenges that are experienced in the usage of mobile computing in education and social networking therefore there is a need to understand the challenges faced by the people and comprehend the perception of the users that are related to mobile computing after the advancement in technology.

Mobile computing has evolved and changed the approach of every sector and every field of work since its development and its implementation. The most important factors of mobile computing are the variations in positive sense, which the mobile devices provide. Mobile computing has provided businesses, small and large sized organizations, education, social networking and communication between people. Mobile computing has provided incomparable convenience to comfort for its users. The development of newer technologies in this domain has emerged and has proven to be beneficial for anywhere that these technologies are implemented and adopted (International Data Corporation IDC, 2010).

Social networking has emerged on the scene since the last decade or so and now it has captured the whole world; the reason being the addiction to this. The social networking websites have attracted mostly the youth all around the globe. This has brought a new topic under debate whether is advantageous or harmful for the youth. Many scholars have quoted it as harmful for the youth and as a time wasting activity for the people (Wireless News, 2010). On the other hand many have quoted it as beneficial for the students and for the youth in general because of the on the go information that the mobile devices provide. Before the introduction of mobile devices in the society, non-portable computers were used but the development of mobile devices which has provided people with ease, was due to portability factor (Information Technology Newsweekly, 2011, pp. 784).

Role of mobile computing in education

From the education perspectives, mobile computing devices have proven to be very helpful for the students. Now the students can link themselves on educational portals while sitting and attending lectures in the class. The on-the-go information and educational material has allowed students to connect themselves with their respective fields within no time. Teachers have also taken advantage from the services of mobile computing big time. Technologies like 3g and 4g/LTE have enabled students to download and upload study materials with much increased speed in terms of bits per second. Previously, the older technologies which were used worldwide were unable to provide people these convenient high speeds which meet nowadays. The quality of education has also enhanced and improved significantly. Despite of the numerous advantages that mobile computing advancements have provided to the education sector all around the globe, there are many dark sides of this too. The major harms that mobile computing has caused for the educational development is the diversity in the present literature online. The scholars have come up with different opinions regarding this aspect. The disadvantages have been highlighted be many big names and the most commonly highlighted disadvantage is the death of creativity in the students. The development and evolution of latest technologies have changed the thinking process of people completely. This has caused lack of creativity and innovativeness in the students and also in the teachers. But according to some scholars, this only depends on the nature of use of technology. Since all the mobile technology nowadays is directly connected with the human actions (Investment Weekly News, 2011, pp.565).

Education and Technological Reality

The educational sector has been influenced the most by the developments in mobile computing and social networking. The difficulty in dealing with these devices is highly attributed to the professional training. But despite the professional difficulty, the possession of modern equipment in classroom, such as, digital whiteboard, multimedia devices, and data projectors, among the others, has its own responsibility.
