The UiTM Sarawak Library was built in 1973 in Sarawak Branch Campus, better known as the Institution of Technology Mara (ITM) back then.

UiTM Sarawak Campus Branch is located at Samarahan in year 1997, which was originally located at Batu Lintang Teachers' Training College in the year 1983 until 1987. Then, it moved to Semenggok Agricultural Training Institute in year 1987 until 1989, and later to Samariang in the year 1989 before taking root here until today.

Few decades back, the UiTM Sarawak Library had only around 668 of books collection with 100 library’s members. However, in present, the library collection could reach more than 50,000 books excluding other databases and printed and non-printed materials, with around 5,000 members, which consists of the UiTM lecturers, staffs and also students.

The UiTM Library has played their part as the main resource centre of reference and information for the users. In doing so, it has provided the users with more facilities and services in term of system and technology to be relevance to their needs for their convenience. Therefore, this library has builds their ILMU (Integrated Library Management Utility) system for those purposes. This is important to meets its objective in providing informative and knowledge wise users.

2.0 System and Technology

2.1 What is system?

A system is known as a link of network or in an element form that functions together complexly in a set.

The system is usually consists of a main element or larger system with other subsystems that related with each other in order to function.

2.2 ILMU (Integrated Library Management Utility) System

2.2.1 ILMU System Background

Integrated Library Management Utility or also known as ILMU works as the library information and knowledge management software. Paradigma System Sdn. Bhd. collaborates with University Technology Mara (UiTM) to build this ILMU system. ILMU was produce to represent an up to date library system in this technology era to fulfil the user needs in order to provide smooth and unified information environment in a form of digital library. ILMU uses an international standardize system and classification of the technology between the client-server and multimedia of driven implementation program by OLE and connection to ODBC. ILMU was initially developed by SISPUKOM but was produce into a new product through system maintenance and design by using the latest technology for modern user trend. This system is built to provide technical and information user services in information centre or library field which is an approach towards library computerisation of its ability to be installed and executed in a number of hardware environments that is accepted by both government and non-government sectors. ILMU system was applied in January 1999, at PITAR which was created to help and support the operation of librarians and library staff daily routine.

2.2.2 ILMU Vendors/ Companies Background

2.2.2.1 Paradigma Sdn. Bhd.

Paradigma Sdn. Bhd. was a private local company under the Companies Act, 1965, in 14th of February, 1994. However, later it was converted into public limited company in 9th of Jun, 2004.

In first of August, 1994, this company start their operation in design, development, installation and implementation of Information and Knowledge Management systems. ILMU was developed through joint development agreement between University Technology MARA (UiTM) with Paradigma company.

Besides from ILMU, Paradigma company also developed three others product that are NeuSyncâ„¢ (previously known as Smart Tools), NeuWebâ„¢ (previously known as e-Components) and NeuLogicâ„¢ (previously known as Enterprise Knowledge Management System or EKMS). Paradigm was awarded the MSC status in July, 2000 and obtained the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) recognition for compliance to ISO9001:2000 and UKAS recognition for compliance to BS EN ISO9001:2000 in December, 2004. Deloitte ranked Paradigma as one of 500 top technology companies in Asia Pacific region. Later, Paradigm was selected by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) to participate in its Quality Excellence for Software and Technology SMEs (QuESTS) programme in April, 2005.

2.2.3 Needs of the ILMU System

ILMU system was invented to provide a fast solution for any problem that may appear in managing and accessing to library collection and materials. Besides, it is also become a support for the librarians and library staff daily routine operations apart from for the user convenience. ILMU system works efficiently and effectively as it helps to save time and to renew the traditional and manual operating system into digital and computerise form which is much beneficial and user-friendly for the user and librarian or library staffs. For example, the use of OPAC system has improve the accessibility of the library collections for the user needs in a fast way by providing information on the classification number or location of the books.

2.2.4 ILMU Functionality

ILMU system was developed mainly to achieve their objective of fulfilling the user needs. Therefore, this system have come out with their own modules which are consists of Acquisition, Authority Control, Cataloguing, Circulation, Foundation, Fund Accounting, Indexing and Abstracting, Info track and Series.

The Acquisition module allows purchase requests from the users to be process, create order, produce claims and cancellations, and to record full and partial receipts. It also helps the librarians to import records from existing bibliographic databases or perform pre-ordering searches against the Cataloguing database for re-ordering purposes, which reduce the duplicates of ordering besides, providing links to Library Fund Accounting databases to track expenses.

The Authority Control module enables users to provide terms that can be used by a library system. With the combination of the Cataloguing module, specific information can be search by using different MARC tags of searching keys to find consistence result.

Cataloguing module helps bibliographic information management for libraries with its locally established data-entry templates. It interfaces with on-line bibliographic databases, modify texts to conform to local cataloguing requirements, and import selected records to ILMU™’s database. Besides, it also permits the generation and arrangement of lists for to the libraries’ needs.

Circulation modules provide tracking of check-ins, check-outs, renewals, recalls, fine payments, notice productions and reporting functions.

Foundation module allows setup and parametisation of policies and reliance needed by other modules under ILMUâ„¢.

Fund accounting module combine with the Acquisitions and Serials modules separately for automatically transferred transaction to the accounting database.

Indexing and abstracting modules allow the library to digitise and index its newspaper cuttings, seminar papers, business plans, lecture notes, magazines and journal articles to be access by using web browser through WebInfoline.

Indexing and Abstracting provides recent events at the library as well as perform searches via features such as Library Map, Library Messages, Library Information, and Library Calendar. It also has an OPAC function, which allows fast information retrieval, categorizing and printing of this information. Suggestion Box also included getting feedback from users.

Series module handles ordering, automatic prediction patterns, check-ins, claims, cancellations and reporting functions.
