Organization Background

AirAsia Berhad is the first low cost, no-frills and low fare airline in Asia and also the second International Airlines in Malaysia. It’s based in Kuala Lumpur. The main hub of AirAsia is the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Tune Group is the parent company of AirAsia. In addition, AirAsia has 5 subsidiary companies. AirAsia was set up in 1993 by DRB-HICOM Bhd, and started its business on 18 November 1996.

In 2001, AirAsia had incurred a lot of debt, former Time Warner executive Tony Fernandes’s company Tune Air Sdn Bhd decided to purchase AirAsia for the price of RM 1, with the RM40 million the worth debts of AirAsia. In 2002, AirAsia sets as a low-fare carrier and started new routes from KLIA with promotional fare low to RM 1. Air Asia was showing a turn from loss to profit after Tony Fernandes taken over. In 2003, AirAsia has been voted as the most popular website for online shopping. After that, AirAsia started to get achievements year after year. (AirAsia Berhad, 2013) Now, AirAsia flies to over 78 destinations with more than 142 routes and operates more than 400 flights daily from hubs located in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. (Fuzheado, 2003) AirAsia is set to take low- cost flying to an all new peak with their company slogan "Now Everyone Can Fly". (AirAsia Berhad, 2013)

One of the products that provided by AirAsia is an AirAsia Credit Card, customers can register an AirAsia Credit Card to obtain a promotion. (AirAsia Berhad ("AirAsia"), 2013) AirAsia Megastore also a product offered by AirAsia, customers can shop online at the website. (Team, 2012) Except that, there is a very convenient service. Customers can use mobile check-in, online check-in by way of the website of AirAsia and print out the boarding pass directly. (AirAsia Berhad, 2013) Apart from this, customers may search and book flight by online. (AirAsia Berhad, 2012) While making a flight, customers can choose and book their own seat, hot meal and check-in baggage through online. (AirAsia Berhad, 2007-2011) AirAsia also provided insurance and protection travel plan for customers when they are making a booking. (AirAsia Berhad, 2007-2001) Besides, customer may make payment by credit card, debit card, ATM payment and online banking. (AirAsia Berhad, 2013) There is also a service offered by AirAsia at the airport. Pregnant guest, unaccompanied guest between 12-16 years old and disabled guest with provides wheelchairs and ambulift access. (AirAsia Berhad, 2013)

AirAsia has 4 Mission. The first mission is AirAsia wants to be the best company to work for whereby employees are treated as part of a big family. Besides, the second mission of AirAsia is to create a globally recognized ASEAN brand. After that, another mission of this company is to attain the lowest cost so that everyone can fly with AirAsia. The last mission of AirAsia is to maintain the highest quality product, embracing technology to reduce cost and enhance service levels.

AirAsia’ s vision is to be the largest low cost airline in Asia and serving the 3 billion people who are currently underserved with poor connectivity and high fares. The vision is reflected to the slogan of AirAsia "Everyone Can Fly".

AirAsia makes the low fare model practicable and create value through the implementation of the 6 key strategies. First of the key strategies is safety first, AirAsia cooperates with maintenance providers and obey with the international airline operations. The second one is high aircraft utilization, carry out the area turnaround fast and ensure is higher productivity and low costs. Third is low fare and no frills, offer customer customize services on quality and service. After that is streamlining operations, ensure the processes are very simple. Firth is lean distribution system, offer a widely and simple about distribution way to make booking and travelling easier. Last is point to point network, offer point to point network maintain low cost and simple operations.
