INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW

Cloud Computing is the new paradigm in the field of Information Technology. It is an extension of parallel computing, distributed computing and grid computing. It provides secure, quick, convenient data storage and net computing service cantered by Internet. Cloud computing is the next generation in computation. Possibly people can have everything they need on the cloud. Cloud Computing is the next natural step in the evolution of on-demand information technology services and products. Cloud Computing is an emerging computing technology that is rapidly consolidation itself as the next big step in the development and deployment of an increasing number of distributed applications.

Cloud Computing delivers infrastructure, platform, and software (application) as services, which are made available as subscription-based services in a pay-as-you-go model to consumers. These services in industry are respectively referred to as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). Cloud computing has been build upon the development of distributed computing, grid computing and virtualization. Since cost of each task in cloud resources is different with one another, scheduling of user tasks in cloud is not the same as in traditional scheduling methods. The way of allocating resources to machine is explained briefly in following chapters.

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

Also Known as Cloud Infrastructure services, this entails delivering computing infrastructure – generally platform virtualization environ – as a service to businesses. Instead of purchasing servers, Data Center space, Software applications, etc, customers choose a completely outsourced service. Networking giant CISCO and Imperva are the champions in the providing quality IaaS services to businesses in need.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)

An extended arm of SaaS, this type of cloud computing involves delivering development environments as a service to the developers and other related professional outfits. Under this, you can build your own apps that run on the provider’s architecture, and your end-users have access to the apps through the Internet from your provider’s servers. Google App Engine and Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) are known to deliver PaaS services to a large number of development premises across the world.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

This forms of cloud computing offers a single application using the web browser to a large number of users through multi-tenant architecture. On the customer part, it implies no upfront investment for acquiring various computing requisites, such as servers, licensing, while providers, with just one app to manage, save immensely upon organizational resources. Google Apps - a productivity enterprise suite from the search major Google, and SalesForce.com are known the world-over for delivering enterprise apps to businesses.

We have some other services like Desktop as a Service (DaaS) and Managed Service Providers (MSP’s). Most data are stored on local networks with servers that may be clustered and share storages. This approach has enough time to be developed into a stable architecture, and provides decent redundancy if it’s deployed in a right way. A new emerging technology, cloud computing, has shown up a demanding attention and quickly been changing the direction of the technology landscape.

With more cloud platforms and more SaaS (Software as a service) applications which run entirely in them, how to benefit more from them with existent systems is considered to be an important question. According to related statistical data, the average service rate of resource in some systems is just 30%, while some other companies or organizations in the opposite side which need to buy a lot of expensive hardware for the ever growing computing tasks. It is necessary to ensure that the resources are used in the most beneficial manner. The Resource Provisioning will be explained detail in the later chapter.

Some of the traditional and emerging Cloud-based applications include social networking, web hosting, content delivery, and real time instrumented data processing. Each of these application types has different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of scheduling and allocation policy on Cloud infrastructures (hardware, software, services) for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is an extremely challenging problem to tackle. The use of real test beds such as Amazon EC2, limits the experiments to the scale of the test bed, and makes the reproduction of results an extremely difficult undertaking, as the conditions prevailing in the Internet-based environments are beyond the control of the tester.

IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS

Before entering into the discussion about how resource provisioning is done, we have to know some important definitions as part of Cloud Sim. For the simulation purpose we make use of Cloud Sim (using Eclipse) as basic step then we forward through the simulation. During the Simulation, we use some keys words like DataCenter, Cloudlet, DataCenter Broker or Cloud Broker, DataCenter Characteristics, Host, VM, and VMScheduler. These terms are discussed briefly in the below section.

Data Center

This class models the core infrastructure level services (hardware) that are offered by Cloud providers (Amazon, Azure, and App Engine). It encapsulates a set of compute hosts that can either be homogeneous or heterogeneous with respect to their hardware configurations (memory, cores, capacity, and storage). Simply we call it as Resource provider.

Cloudlet

This class models the Cloud-based application services. CloudSim orchestrates the complexity of an application in terms of its computational requirements. Every application service has a pre-assigned instruction length and data transfer (both pre and post fetches) overhead that it needs to undertake during its life-cycle. This class can also be extended to support modelling of other performance and composition metrics for applications such as transactions in database-oriented applications. In general it is termed as tasks in CloudSim.

DataCenter Broker or Cloud Broker

This class models a broker, which is responsible for mediating negotiations between SaaS and Cloud providers; and such negotiations are driven by QoS requirements. The broker acts on behalf of SaaS providers. In simple words we describe broker as it is one which decides which Cloudlet executes first and in which VM it runs. It discovers suitable Cloud service providers by querying the Cloud Information Service (CIS) and undertakes on-line negotiations for allocation of resources/services that can meet application’s QoS needs.

DataCenter Characteristics

This class contains configuration information of DataCenter resources.

Host

This class models a physical resource such as a compute or storage server. It encapsulates important information such as the amount of memory and storage, a list and type of processing cores (to represent a multi-core machine), an allocation of policy for sharing the processing power among virtual machines, and policies for provisioning memory and bandwidth to the virtual machines.

VM (Virtual Machine)

This class models a virtual machine, which is managed and hosted by a Cloud host component. Every VM component has access to a component that stores the following characteristics related to a VM: accessible memory, processor, storage size, and the VM’s internal provisioning policy that is extended from an abstract component called the Cloudlet Scheduler.

VMScheduler

This is an abstract class implemented by a Host component that models the policies (space-shared, time-shared) required for allocating processor cores to VMs. The functionalities of this class can easily be overridden to accommodate application specific processor sharing policies.

This section presents background information on various elements that form the basis for architecting Cloud computing systems. It also presents requirements of elastic or malleable applications that need to scale across multiple, geographically distributed data centres that are owned by one or more Cloud service providers. The CloudSim framework aims to ease-up and speed the process of conducting experimental studies that use Cloud computing as the application provisioning environments.

LITERATURE SURVEY

CLOUDSIM ARCHITECTURE

The figure below shows the multi-layered design of the CloudSim software framework and its architectural components. Initial releases of CloudSim used SimJava as discrete event simulation engine that supports several core functionalities, such as queuing and processing of events, creation of Cloud system entities (services, host, data centre, broker, and virtual machines), communication between components, and management of the simulation clock. However in the current release, SimJava layer has been removed in order to allow some advanced operations that are not supported by it. We provide finer discussion on these advanced operations in the next section.

The CloudSim simulation layer provides support for modelling and simulation of virtualized Cloud-based data centre environments including dedicated management interfaces for virtual machines (VMs), memory, storage, and bandwidth. The fundamental

issues such as provisioning of hosts to VMs, managing application execution, and monitoring dynamic system state are handled by this layer. A Cloud provider, who wants to study the efficiency of different policies in allocating its hosts to VMs (VM provisioning), would need to implement their strategies at this layer. Such implementation can be done by programmatically extending the core VM provisioning functionality. There is a clear distinction at this layer related to provisioning of hosts to VMs. A Cloud host can be concurrently allocated to a set of VMs that execute applications based on SaaS provider’s defined QoS levels. This layer also exposes functionalities that a Cloud application developer can extend to perform complex workload profiling and application performance study. The top-most layer in the CloudSim stack is the User Code that exposes basic entities for hosts (number of machines, their specification and so on), applications (number of tasks and their requirements), VMs, number of users and their application types, and broker scheduling policies. By extending the basic entities given at this layer, a Cloud application developer can perform following activities: (i) generate a mix of workload request distributions, application configurations; (ii) model Cloud availability scenarios and perform robust tests based on the custom configurations; and (iii) implement custom application provisioning techniques for clouds and their federation.

As Cloud computing is still an emerging paradigm for distributed computing, there is a lack of defined standards, tools and methods that can efficiently tackle the infrastructure and application level complexities. Hence, in the near future there would be a number of research efforts both in academia and industry towards defining core algorithms, policies, and application benchmarking based on execution contexts. By extending the basic functionalities already exposed with CloudSim, researchers will be able to perform tests based on specific scenarios and configurations, thereby allowing the development of best practices in all the critical aspects related to Cloud Computing.

Cloudlet Processing

Processing of task units is handled by respective VMs; therefore their progress must be continuously updated and monitored at every simulation step. For handling this, an internal event is generated to inform the DataCenter entity that a task unit completion is expected in the near future. Thus, at each simulation step, each DataCenter entity invokes a method called updateVMsProcessing () for every host that it manages. Following this, the contacted VMs update processing of currently active tasks with the host. The input parameter type for this method is the current simulation time and the return parameter type is the next expected completion time of a task currently running in one of the VMs on that host. The next internal event time is the least time among all the finish times, which are returned by the hosts.

At the host level, invocation of updateVMsProcessing () triggers an updateCloudletsProcessing () method that directs every VM to update its tasks unit status (finish, suspended, executing) with the DataCenter entity. This method implements a similar logic as described previously for updateVMsProcessing () but at the VM level. Once this method is called, VMs return the next expected completion time of the task units currently managed by them. The least completion time among all the computed values is sent to the DataCenter entity. As a result, completion times are kept in a queue that is queried by DataCenter after each event processing step. The completed tasks waiting in the finish queue that are directly returned concern Cloud Broker or Cloud Coordinator. This process is depicted in Figure 2 in the form of a sequence diagram.

At the beginning of a simulation, each DataCenter entity registers with the CIS (Cloud Information Service) Registry. CIS then provides information registry type functionalities, such as match-making services for mapping user/Brokers requests to suitable Cloud providers. Next, the DataCenter Brokers acting on behalf of users consult the CIS service to obtain the list of cloud providers who can offer infrastructure services that match application’s QoS, hardware, and software requirements. In the event of a match, the DataCenter broker deploys the application with the CIS suggested cloud. The communication flow described so far relates to the basic flow in a simulated experiment. Some variations in this flow are possible depending on policies. For example, messages from Brokers to DataCenters may require a confirmation from other parts of the DataCenter, about the execution of an action, or about the maximum number of VMs that a user can create.

DESIGN OF CLOUDSIM

CLOUDSIM CLASS DESIGN

The Class design diagram for the simulator is depicted in Figure 3.1. In this section, we provide finer details related to the fundamental classes of CloudSim, which are building blocks of the simulator.

Data Center

This class models the core infrastructure level services (hardware, software) offered by resource providers in a Cloud computing environment. It encapsulates a set of compute hosts (blade servers) that can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous as regards to their resource configurations (memory, cores, capacity, and storage). Furthermore, every DataCenter component instantiates a generalized resource provisioning component that implements a set of policies for allocating bandwidth, memory, and storage devices.

DataCenter Broker

This class models a broker, which is responsible for mediating between users and service providers depending on users’ QoS requirements and deploys service tasks across Clouds. The broker acting on behalf of users identifies suitable Cloud service providers through the Cloud Information Service (CIS) and negotiates with them for an allocation of resources that meets QoS needs of users. The researchers and system developers must extend this class for conducting experiments with their custom developed application placement policies.

SANStrorage

This class models a storage area network that is commonly available to Cloud-based data centres for storing large chunks of data. SANStrorage implements a simple interface that can be used to simulate storage and retrieval of any amount of data, at any time subject to the availability of network bandwidth. Accessing files in a SAN at run time incurs additional delays for task unit execution, due to time elapsed for transferring the required data files through the data centre internal network.

Virtual Machine (VM)

This class models an instance of a VM, whose management during its life cycle is the responsibility of the Host component. As discussed earlier, a host can simultaneously instantiate multiple VMs and allocate cores based on predefined processor sharing policies (space-shared, time-shared). Every VM component has access to a component that stores the characteristics related to a VM, such as memory, processor, storage, and the VM’s internal scheduling policy, which is extended from the abstract component called VMScheduling.

Cloudlet

This class models the Cloud-based application services (content delivery, social networking, business workflow), which are commonly deployed in the data centres. CloudSim represents the complexity of an application in terms of its computational requirements. Every application component has a pre-assigned instruction length (inherited from GridSim’s Gridlet component) and amount of data transfer (both pre and post fetches) that needs to be undertaken for successfully hosting the application.

BWProvisioner

This is an abstract class that models the provisioning policy of bandwidth to VMs that are deployed on a Host component. The function of this component is to undertake the allocation of network bandwidths to set of competing VMs deployed across the data centre. Cloud system developers and researchers can extend this class with their own policies (priority, QoS) to reflect the needs of their applications.

MemoryProvisioner

This is an abstract class that represents the provisioning policy for allocating memory to VMs. This component models policies for allocating physical memory spaces to the competing VMs. The execution and deployment of VM on a host is feasible only if the MemoryProvisioner component determines that the host has the amount of free memory, which is requested for the new VM deployment.

VMProvisioner

This abstract class represents the provisioning policy that a VM Monitor utilizes for allocating VMs to Hosts. The chief functionality of the VMProvisioner is to select available host in a data centre, which meets the memory, storage, and availability requirement for a VM deployment. The default Simple VMProvisioner implementation provided with the CloudSim package allocates VMs to the first available Host that meets the aforementioned requirements. Hosts are considered for mapping in a sequential order. However, more complicated policies can be easily implemented within this component for achieving optimized allocations, for example, selection of hosts based on their ability to meet QoS requirements such as response time, budget.

VMMAllocation Policy

This is an abstract class implemented by a Host component that models the policies

(space-shared, time-shared) required for allocating processing power to VMs. The functionalities of this class can easily be overridden to accommodate application specific processor sharing policies.

RESOURCE PROVISIONING

Virtualization, distribution and dynamic extendibility are the basic characteristics of cloud computing. Virtualization is the main character. Most software and hardware have provided support to virtualization. We can virtualizes many factors such as IT resource, software, hardware, operating system and net storage, and manage them in the cloud computing platform; every environment has nothing to do with the physical platform.

Usually tasks are scheduled by user requirements. New scheduling strategies need to be proposed to overcome the problems posed by network properties between user and resources. New scheduling strategies may use some of the conventional scheduling concepts to merge them together with some network aware strategies to provide solutions for better and more efficient job scheduling.

TRADITIONAL WAY

The architecture behind cloud computing is a massive network of "cloud resources" interconnected as if in a grid running in parallel, always using the technique of virtualization to maximize the computing power per server. Applications of users work on the virtual operation systems. The virtualization is employed for cloud resources as the environment for applications to work on. Obviously, cloud resources are limited while the requirements of applications are growing.

Traditional way for task scheduling in cloud computing tended to use the direct tasks of users as the overhead application base. The problem is that there may be no relationship between the overhead application base and the way that different tasks cause overhead costs of resources in cloud systems. This problem leads to over-costed and over-priced in some high-volume simple tasks while under-costed and under-priced in low-volume complex ones.

The problems caused due to traditional way of task scheduling (some of them) are increased product diversity, changing cost structures and use of volume-based cost drivers, all of these causes have resulted in the costs in cloud distorted.

ACTIVITY BASED COSTING (ABC Algorithm)

This Activity Based Costing (ABC) algorithm is a solution for the above discussed problems in traditional way. ABC uses cost drivers that directly link performed activities to tasks made. Cost drivers are selected which measure the average demand placed on each activity by each task. Activity cost pools are assigned to tasks in proportion to the way that they consume each activity in system resources.

Activity-based costing is a way of measuring both the cost of the objects and the performances of activities. It can help solve problems such as: distorted product costs and poor cost control. In cloud computing, each application of users will run on a virtual operation system, the cloud systems distributed resources among these virtual operation systems. Every application is completely different and is independent and has no link between each other whatsoever, for example, some require more CPU time to compute complex task, and some others may need more memory to store data, etc. Resources are sacrificed on activities performed on each individual unit of service.

ABC Algorithm

This section describe how to design an algorithm of activity based costing method in cloud computing. The specific algorithm is described as followed:

Implementation of ABC method in Cloud Computing

Cost of every individual resources use is different. The priority level can be sorted by the ratio of task’s cost to its profit. For easy management, three lists can be built for the sorted task, each list has a label of priority level such as HIGH, MID and LOW. Cloud systems can take someone out from the highest priority list to compute. Maps should be scanned every turn to modify the priority level of each task. Some restrictive conditions like maximum time user can wait should to be measured as extra factors.

Improved ABC Algorithm in Cloud Computing

The methodology is the scheduler accepts number of tasks, average MI of tasks, deviation percentage of MI granularity size and processing overhead of all the tasks. Resources are selected. The priority levels of the tasks are calculated. Tasks are sorted according to their priority, and they are placed in three different lists based on three levels of priority namely high priority, medium priority and low priority. Now job grouping algorithm is applied to the above lists in order to allocate the task-groups to different available resources.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

To install Eucalyptus, system must meet the following baseline requirements.

Computer Requirements

Physical Machines: All Eucalyptus components must be installed on physical machines, not virtual machines.

Central Processing Units (CPUs): We recommend that each machine in your Eucalyptus cloud contain either an Intel or AMD processor with a minimum of two, 2GHz cores.

Operating Systems: Eucalyptus supports the following Linux distributions: CentOS 5, RHEL 5, RHEL 6, and Ubuntu10.04 LTS.

Machine Clocks: Each Eucalyptus component machine and any client machine clocks must be synchronized (for example, using NTP). These clocks must be synchronized all the time, not just at installation.

Hypervisor: CentOS 5 and RHEL 5 installations must have Xen installed and configured on NC host machines. RHEL 6 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installations must have KVM installed and configured on NC host machines. VMware-based installations do not include NCs, but must have a VMware hypervisor pool installed and configured.

Machine Access: Verify that all machines in your network allow SSH login, and that root or sudo access is available on each of them.

Storage and Memory Requirements

Each machine in your network needs a minimum of 30 GB of storage.

We recommend at least 100GB for Walrus and SC hosts running Linux VMs. We recommend at least 250GB for Walrus and SC hosts running Windows VMs.

We recommend a range of 50-100GB per NC host running Linux VMs, and at least 250GB per NC host for running Windows VMs. Note that larger available disk space enables greater number of VMs.

Each machine in your network needs a minimum of 4 GB RAM. However, we recommend more RAM for improved caching.

Network Requirements

All NCs must have access to a minimum of 1GB Ethernet network connectivity.

All Eucalyptus components must have at least one Network Interface Card (NIC) for a base-line deployment. For better network isolation and scale, the CC should have two NICS (one facing the CLC/user network and one facing the NC/VM network). For HA configurations that include network failure resilience, each machine should have on extra NIC for each functional NIC (they will be bonded and connected to separate physical network hardware components).

Some configurations require that machines hosting a CC have two network interfaces, each with a minimum of 1GB Ethernet.

Depending on the feature set that is to be deployed, the network ports connecting the Ethernet interfaces may need to allow VLAN trunking.

In order to enable all of the networking features, Eucalyptus requires that you make available two sets of IP addresses. The first range is private, to be used only within the Eucalyptus system itself. The second range is public, to be routable to and from end-users and VM instances. Both sets must be unique to Eucalyptus, not in use by other components or applications within your network.

CONCLUSIONS

The recent efforts to design and develop Cloud technologies focus on defining novel methods, policies and mechanisms for efficiently managing Cloud infrastructures. This project aims at task scheduling with minimum total tasks completion time and minimum cost. Since cost of each task in cloud resources is different with one another, scheduling of user tasks in cloud is not the same as in traditional scheduling methods. CloudSim is employed to carry out and simulate the tasks assignment algorithm, and distributed task scheduling.

The Traditional way computing tended to use the direct tasks of users as overhead application base. The problem is that there may be no relationship between the overhead application base and the way that different tasks cause overhead costs of resources in cloud systems. The solution to the traditional way is given as Activity Based Costing (ABC) algorithm.

Now Improved ABC algorithm has been proposed with a modification of Job Grouping and scheduling the tasks. This Improved ABC algorithm will be compared with the existing ABC algorithm against different QoS parameters.
