Companies:

Capgemini (https://graduatecareers.uk.capgemini.com/)

Logica plc (http://www.logica-graduates.co.uk/our-programmes/graduate-programme)

2.3.b Evaluating the schemes

Many Employers offer on-the-job IT training schemes to allow new IT graduates to develop their skills with the exposure to real business environments, with the aim of developing their careers to turn them into valuable assets for their employer.

Logica plc (www.logica.com) is a company offering multiple IT Services and strategies, ranging from telecommunications to payroll systems, outsourcing, business consultancy, etc.). Their graduate programme takes 18 months to complete and aims to provide IT graduates with the business and technical skills (tuitions and training) gained and used by Logica within the IT industry. Given the breadth and diversified nature of Logica businesses, the topic areas of the programmes are usually determined by the needs of the company, most of them offer the experience and challenges of being involved with live projects.

--Network Rail UK (www.networkrail.co.uk) offers an ongoing two-year programme which encompasses experience and training covering specific aspects of their Information Management, e.g. business analysis, project management, IT security, IT Technical support, etc., which have become increasingly fundamental for their passengers and freight rail service.

GlaxoSmithKline plc (www.gsk.com/uk/), a large and renowned pharmaceutical company, is another company which proposes a programme targeting aspiring IT professionals. Their three-year programme is further divided in on-the-job stages (supervised), lasting nine months, giving a wide understanding of four particular areas related to their Business and IT infrastructures.

The opportunity of accessing the knowledge offered by Logica and Network Rail within their programmes is captivating, also thanks to the various aspects of IT and Business strategies covered (and applied to their real and demanding live environments), but I would rather succeed in joining the programme proposed by GlaxoSmithKline, which would means being able to indirectly help the people healthcare by using IT knowledge and, for me, it is a more attractive option than merely producing revenue or enabling/enhancing transports.

IT Industry Element 3

The potential benefits of ERP and some of the difficulties in its implementation

Case study: E.ON

Introduction

The dawn of the internet and real-time transactions, the emergent globalisation of markets and economic performance, witnesses of swift changes (e.g. new trends, company mergers and acquisitions) as well as the need to lower operational costs, are some of the drivers behind the need for businesses to unify their resources within a unified platform, sharable and accessible with no regard for geographical proximity.

ERP Systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are powerful software able to integrate the main operations of large organisations, helping to optimise and simplify the management of their information, assets and departments. Technically, a typical ERP System have the characteristics of a server-client architecture, with clients (remote assets) using a common central database to share data. Latest and more advanced ERP systems use of the Internet for interaction between the company with external organisations, such as customers (e-business) or other businesses (Pearlson, K., Saunders, C., 2000).

ERP systems are the implementations proposed by vendors like SAP (www.sap.com), and Oracle (www.oracle.com), widely used in the industry, although in the last few years some free alternatives have become available, e.g. Compiere (www.compiere.com) have been developed. (Stoilov, T., Stoilova, K., 2008)

ERP - main Benefits and implementation issues

Study case: E.ON (SAP)

---------------

The ERP systems of enterprises within the Utilities industry can be used as vital examples to better understand some of the characteristics, benefits and problems that come with ERP implementations, given the scale of their operations, which involve thousands of employees, resources and processes.

In 2008, E.ON (www.E.ON.com), a very large Utility company, focused by the need to reduce operational costs and optimise the overall effectiveness of the operations, decided to implement an ERP Strategy----. The successful results achieved with their first pilot experiment in Austria in 1997, whereby a (SAP) ERP System was able to improve the business after only four months (SAP AG, n.d.), stimulated the Oil corporation to extend the approach to the rest of its infrastructure, in order to create a global, common internetwork for its resource.

The 'unifying' structure of ERP enables large enterprises like E.ON Group to control, remotely, the aspects of their business in a more precise, faster and accurate manner, lowering downtime and operational costs. Moreover, the real-time features allow for a quicker reaction to sudden problems or changing needs and tendencies of markets and customers (Pearlson, K., Saunders, C., 2000).

An aspect to consider is that buying and maintaining ERP solutions can be really pricey, exorbitant when thinking about the huge size of some enterprises. Pearlson, K. and Saunders, C. (2000) suggest that a conversion to ERP systems, normally done in phases which can last years, postpones most of the benefits until its final completion, discouraging point for many companies. Also, many complex or specific businesses which cannot adapt their structure to traditional ERP might require even more costly personalised solutions.

In fact, E.ON Group's ERP implementation process has been lasting for more than a decade (owns assets distributed over more than 140 countries), and E.ON reported that one of the main challenges faced was to integrate the heterogeneous IT systems within the business itself, due to the acquisition of several other companies. The 'openness' of the ERP's architecture made possible the creation of ad-hoc software to link the different structures (SAP AG, 2002).

To train the employees on how to use the new system, as well as the difference in technological advances, security practices and IT regulations throughout the countries (Nazir, M.M., 2005) involved in the conversion must have been another problem for E.ON, probably slowing down the whole process. In their first experiment in Austria, E.ON reported to have provided the training in advance, a move that was necessary.

Another challenge for the E.ON deployment regards the pre-existing data 'scattered' over the different systems, which needs to be replicated onto the new unique system, a process slow but necessary. Such a big migration of data must probably mean an augmented size and time for backups needed within their new solution (www.implement-erp.com, 2007).

A recent study over the ERP benefits (Romero, J.A. et al, 2010) highlighted how, from the 1990 to the year 2005, companies using ERP systems resulted to be more productive, efficient and financially rewarded than the ones that are not using the ERP's centralised approach, an evidence of the winning approach chosen by E.ON.

Conclusion

ERP systems have changed the way companies and enterprises see and manage their resources. It entails a lengthy, costly and slow process, but past implementations demonstrate it to be one of the major factors large businesses need to consider when trying to optimise the functions, reduce costs and respond quickly to market requirements.
