Abstract

This game is puzzle game which include two stages, the first stage provide two option for the kids, either to arrange a numbers or alphabet’s, while the second stage is an arrangement of statue in a serial order. This game was designed for the kids between ages of 6 to 9 , which we believe that, this game will be able to provide them the challenges, fun, and educational advantage as well. However the game was developed by processing programming language, which supports TUI. The controller of this game is a fiducials, which kids have to use each fiducials accordingly. Each fiducial has a number on it, and its working based on the game code. Similarly the Game was evaluated by user and experts as well.

Introduction

This Game contains stage one to two, and two optional from stage one. stage one is a puzzle, arrangement of numbers from 1 to 9, and second option is alphabets. Kids has to place each number serially according to game rule, in Oder to pass the stage , stage has certain rule which I’m going to explain later. However stage two is arrangement of images, A user has to place each image on exact location, as it’s in a game rules. This game is for the kids between 6 to 9 ages. We believe that this game will help them academically, in terms of understanding numbers, as well as other parts of how to arrange images in a future. This is also containing a lot of challenges, as player has to arrange the numbers serially, the user cannot make any progress until he do as he instructed by the game, and we also believe this is a strong challenge. Similarly kids cannot make it to another stage until he finishes the challenge of the first stage, which is arrangement of numbers serially. However stage two also contains certain challenges as user has to arrange the object in order to make a complete statue, as its Design by us.

Purpose of the game

The purpose of this game is to provide Fun, challenges, and academic advantage to the Kids. As we designed this Game, based on three purposes, Fun, challenges, and Educational. We designed this game to be fun, that is why we include challenges of arrangement of Numbers on it. As user is playing, he has to arrange each number to its location. Our aim on this game is to make kids to understand the numbers serially, as well as when disarranging it to understand what it means. We also believe that arranging Statue object in stage two will help kids to understand the basic concept of how to make arrangement. However we also consider this game as great enjoyment to the user. Our Goal is to make user happy, and to understand the numbers and statue images parts at the same time. Is also our goal providing the challenges to this game, as user has to arrange numbers and make it readable at the same time

Background on TUIO

TUIO supports fiducials which I used to play the Game; kids can use fiducials to play the game, As each fiducials contain a specific Id. However fiducials provide call back to the game users, as fiducials works as tangible user interface, as user play game with fiducials it provide a digital feed back to him. Fiducials are used to move the game, or application to the desired direction, which the system will give you a digital feedback, after you move it, and each fiducials are working based on the command. For example a fiducial that contains id number 7, can only perform an operation as you program it to do in your source code.

Characteristics of TUI and its association with the game

Tangible representation of physical object:

This is the use of tangible object, by means of getting digital information from the system. Use of fiducials to control numbers, alphabets, and statue images in terms of physical interaction, is based on this characteristics of TUI.

Response of the system in terms interacting with tangible representation:

This means the response of the system when playing with fiducials, the accuracy of the tangible interaction, feed back to the user. The numbers, alphabets as well as statue images are moving accurately to the desired location by the user.

Intangible coupling of tangible representation:

That is the digital feedback from the system, when performing certain action, the puzzle arrangements game include background sound, as well as the movements of images, and some other sounds when placing a wrong object.

Puzzle arrangement game and reality based frame interaction (RBI)

This is a frame work based on how the digital world is more corresponding to real world in terms physical interaction with system. This includes four steps based on RBI that this game involved in two.

Naïve physics

Naïve physics is a use of common sense, by means of conscious of the surrounding. the puzzle arrangement game include moving of fiducials to their target location, fiducials has to be place in its exact target location before validating the movements, this is how naive physics was applied to the game.

:

This is the body movement while interacting with the system. The use of physical interaction that kid use fiducials with his hands to move it on top of table top.

Socials awareness

This is the awareness of who is next to you and the capability of communicating with him in the game. In puzzle arrangement game two or more users can move the fiducials without interrupting the game.

Environmental awareness:

This is the environmental skills, concerning moving fiducials about the user.

About the Game

The game contains three stages, which stage one has two optional stages. User has two option to choose from stage one, either to play puzzle arrangement of numbers, or arrangement of alphabets, upon completion of each stage between them user will be talking to stage two, where he will be required to arrange statue images. Every user has five chances in each stage, which if he fail then he has to start from the beginning.

About stage one arrangement of numbers:

Stage one have two option which kids have to decide between arrangement of numbers, or alphabets, user has to arrange each number serially in order to pass this stage. If user has successfully arranged each number serially, he will be taken to stage two where he will be required to arrange statue image. However, if user place the number wrongly, he as five chances in this stage, if he fail all the chances then he will start from the beginning.

Second option of stage one arrangement of alphabets:

This is a stage where user will be required to arrange alphabets serially, each letter have to be place in each box by using fiducials, and it will be arrange serially. User will be taken to the next stage immediately after he finishes this stage successfully. This stage also has five chances like other stages. If user fails five times then he has restart from the beginning.

About stage two

Stage two is a final stage of this game, which include arrangement of statue images. User has to place each single piece of image in order to make a good statue. User is required to place each piece of image in a box. This stage also has five chances like others. User is only allowed to try five times.

Why is it Educational

This game is educational. As this game is a puzzle game that teaches kids how to arrange numbers. This game helps kids academically in understanding the numbers, as well as how to arrange the numbers. As a game rules user have to put each number serially before he makes any progress, we believe this will help him to correct his mistakes based on this game. However, this game also teaches kids to understand how statue are made. As future architecture this is a foundation that we consider is really helpful in a future. There is a possible guarantee that, kids will understand numbers, this will resulted that he might not has a problem in a future on mathematics. This is another academic advantage of this game. This is educational, as it provides educational stages. First it will help in understanding numbers in terms of arranging them to the their location, this game will also help in understanding weather numbers are arrange serially or not, this will help a kids to know how to use numbers perfectly. Similarly statue arrangement is another significant advantage academically. By arranging parts, to make Statue this will Expand the kids brain, and it also teaches in being a better architecture in a future.

Why is it Fun?

This game is fun, because it provides arrangement of numbers. the fun behind this game is when ever kids make a progress to first stage he will be taking to another stage, this is like a reward for his work, we are sure that whoever get reward for what he did will be definitely happy about it. As we know that you can’t get to pass another stage without thinking critically, this can also make user happy as getting reward as good thinker, if he pass the first stage. Whenever kid arranges numbers to their appropriate location, he will be also happy, because it means that his mathematical knowledge has been improved. Enjoyment is what makes this game fun, as user enjoy arranging the numbers and object, whenever he completed every stage, the progress result will be display which will shows that he understand, and he is good as well. We consider this as whoever gets good result based on what he did, there will be definitely happiness on it.

Why is it challenging

This game is challenging, because there is a lot of challenging on each stage that user has to undergo before he make any progress. This challenges include arrangement of numbers serially, is a very sensitive case to arrange number serially based on puzzle game. For example. Kid may arrange numbers from zero to eight, and when arranging other numbers will be difficult for him, that means there is a plan before any step. Kid might arrange the numbers, and restart the game eventually due to just only one single number that he missed. We believe this is a great challenge to the kids of this age. Is also part of the challenge kid to know how numbers are use serially before he starts playing the game, this is also another challenge in this game. However there is also another challenge in stage two, which kid has to arrange statue parts accordingly in order to make a statue. This teaches and also challenges kids to understand how to make a statue. Is a challenge to place over five images accordingly to make a statue. As user has to be very sensitive and look at every image carefully before he starts the game, this is a challenge to him to study any piece of image before start. And another challenge is he doesn’t have to just place images and that’s all he finishes the game, no, kids will definitely face some challenge when playing this game. As I said he has to study the every image and play it accordingly, and whenever he make a mistake, for example placing image not on the right position, this might results to start the game over again from the beginning, case sensitive is challenge to the user on this game.

Requirement

This game include two requirements as follow

Function requirement

Tangible interaction, this include the users control with a system

Tangible user interface is collaborative

The game is educative. Arranging numbers and alphabets will help kids in better understanding letters as well as numbers.

Challenging and fun. The arrangement is a challenge to a user which kids of this age has to be sensitive when arranging the numbers, letters and images. And it’s fun because of the result of the progress.

Non-Function requirement:

the kids need help from third party in the game

the game play has to be arrange as it was designed

ability to maintain the design

Design and prototyping

Design concept

This is the design that was applied to the game; it includes the player’s requirement as well as their satisfaction. The following prototype was made in the game.

Prototype

After gathering information from books and online articles. We used curtain as background of the game. However the background was not clear as we want it to be, so we decide to ignore it and we come up with the new idea, which is splash screen, which will satisfy the users need and met their requirement.

Sketches: the below image is the sketch we started with previously, before we changed to original plan of our game stage

The below inage is how we changed previous sketches to original which we implemented in our game presently. The sketches include all the stages of the game, together with some requirement that should inluclude in terms fun, challenges and educational advantage.

Design process- user centered system Design

Will finally come up the Design process after the long time of researching about design.

We implemented a design that we come up with, which includes a two stages, below are explanation to the design stages which have been implemented in this game.

Splash screen

Splash screen is the main and first page of the game at the same time. The page was designed to excite kids, as it contains some animations on it. The page also contains some icons on it, this include two optional of stage one, and the exit I con.

First stage

The main plash screen contains some buttons, and they are also part of heuristic design, it has some images and exit button where you can drag a fiducial and exit it.

Second stage

The stage two contains images of statue that is why it has difference from stage one. Stage two is serial arrangement of statue image in Oder to make a complete statue.

Game Rules

kids cannot move fiducials and try to place it at the same time

kids cannot drag the image, number or alphabets out of the game background

the kids cannot add additional object apart from image, number and alphabets

each stage doesn’t has any limitation

Evaluation

User evaluation

This is user evaluation which is done by two users. Where every user played stage one to two, and another user also try the second option of stage one.

Expert’s evaluation

This expert evaluation where two experts evaluate our game. Each expert test the usability and functionality of the game. Similarly each user also played stage one to two of the game. We also use the following evaluation techniques when evaluating the game.

Game control and comfort

Standard of the game when playing, and reliability

Video recording

Support users when playing, in terms of error and accuracy

Physical interaction with the system

Reflections

What I learned

The Idea of Designing a Game as course work really help me and teaches me about how to Design another applications as well. As we passed through processing, which has some similarities with java; I also learned and understand the difference between processing and java. I also learned how to plan a work from the beginning stage to implementation, as well as how to use processing in different case, for example. how to use hashmap, which can be used to store object or image like an array in java. I also learned how to sketch a work before you start coding it, which can help to understand better of what a programmer is going to do in a future. However I also understand the benefits of adobe Photoshop in terms of building an application or game. As we used it to edit and create our game images. The most important thing that I learned is how to build an application and represent it in a future.

Design

I learned different things on a Design stage of this game. For examples I learned whenever I want to build an application or game, the easiest way and the smartest way is to sketch it on a paper or something like it, this is exactly how I did mine by sketching it on a piece of paper and I later on applied it to the game. I first look at many different games before I started designing mine. I also looked at the criteria when designing the game, I asked myself different questions, such as does this game educational as I instructed to do, and is it fun as well as challenges. I played a little imagination on a piece of paper by pretending that I’m playing game, this also helps me in Design stage, to identify those my game met the following criteria, before I finished my Design.

Evaluation

Me and my group members, we used table top to evaluate the game. But before we used table top I also use camera in my laptop, I try some personal evaluation. I open my webcam and I hold all the fiducials and played it a little bit. We evaluate our game on table top which is evaluated by two Experts and two users. Two users evaluated our game as well as two experts. This resulted that there is no problem with the game. However this teaches me how to evaluate an application. The methodology of evaluation that I followed teaches me how software’s and games are tested by the professionals, as well as users.

Explanation of the Technology

The code of this game is processing codes. Which we design it based on tangible user interface. TUIO and processing also has some similarities with java programming language. This game also used fiducials as controller to control the game, which is normally played on table top.

React vision

React vision is like a controller in this game. It supports processing language to control the application or game. Each fiducials has its own id, and its working based on the command given to it. This is based on puzzle, which kids have to move the fiducials to arrange each number in its appropriate position. Fiducial is tangible object, using fiducial provide a digital feed back to the kids. The reactivation is also used to make a sound on table top, it can use to control many applications based on TUI. In our first stage of this game, kids has to use fiducials to control each number to its exact location, the numbers are in serial order which are been controlled by fiducials. I learned how fiducials are used not only in a game, but in order applications as well. I understand how fiducials are designed in a TUI.

TUIO processing

Processing is a programming language that has some similarities with java programming language. Based on this game I understand processing not only how to build game how to build other applications as well. Processing has hashmap which is used to store object. For example is like a drawer you can store many image, it’s like an array in java programming language. Processing is not only for building game but for applications as well. I also learned how to import images and give them command to perform certain action. Similarly I also understand how to use hashmap to import sound, which you can use in your application or game.

Java,

Java is a programming language, and processing is a programming language as well which has some similarities with java. However you can use java programming language to build a game or application. Similarly you can also use processing to build a game or application. This game teaches me the difference between java programming language and processing programming language. Java used array for storing images and other object, while processing uses hashmap for storing. I also understand that TUI processing supports processing code, while java application supports java programming language.

My contribution

My contribution on this game involved IN many parts, I did online research, which included research about the codes, video tutorials on TUI, and processing, I also read programming books concerning java and processing programming language. The user and experts were recorded by me in the evaluation, the recoding and making of fiducials is my contribution of the group in the evaluation of the game. Similarly I also did a heuristic evaluation at the same time. As I make fiducials during the evaluation and I also arranged them on table top.. My participation in programming in including coding, and research of programming books, videos as well as articles concerning processing and java programming language.

Conclusion

This game is puzzle arrangement game. Its aim is to provide fun, challenging, and educational to kids. The designed process and designed concept, o both were implanted based on fun and challenges, as well as educational advantage. The game was evaluated by both the users and experts, which they resulted that the designed was fine. This game include three stages, which stage one has two optional stages, kids has two choose one from two of them, and stage two contains one stage, which is arrangement of an images. We believe that this game will be able to provide the kids challenging, fun as well as educational advantage.
