Reflective Paper

One of the hardest lessons in life is translating your thinking into logical words. We never know how hard that is unless we try. Personally speaking, the trip of discovering knowledge starts from the English course, whereas the goal of this course was to convert the knowledge into a single language. Being a learner in this course, my entire experience is full of wonder and excitement, as I performed more than my own expectations. This is, mostly, due to the support of all of my classmates, including the instructor who, really, played an important role in helping me learn the English language. This class, also, gave me an opportunity to learn something new everyday.

I faced a number of obstacles and difficulties in this class. For me, the academic journey appeared to be, quite, prolonged and exhausting in this class, as I had to struggle hard in learning a secondary language like English.

Broadly speaking, one of these difficulties is that no one could read my thoughts unless I write them on a paper, and the very writing process takes considerable time in general.

But this is, also, the class where I managed to learn many valuable tips and advices, as repeatedly given by the professor. All credits goes to my English professor who, really, helped me write effectively and convincingly with clear thoughts and new ideas.

Usually, our English professor shares many workable and unique ideas with all of the students in class, and under his guidance, we all learned how to write persuasively, according to the needs and requirements of the readers. In addition, he is a great storyteller who makes you listen to him carefully, right from the start till the end.

Honestly speaking, writing had always been a challenging subject for me. Thanks to this English course, I have started taking writing seriously, as this art has, greatly, opened my mind to express my ideas or beliefs with utmost clarity.

Interestingly, verbal communication is, mistakenly, taken as the most effective medium to express one’s thoughts and ideas for many people.

Quite the opposite, the written words are more effective, convincing and far-reaching for the target audiences, providing maximum times for both writer and reader to concentrate on the subject, which is not fugitive like verbal communication, and is there to stay in form of writing.

For example, if you try to convince your friends that there is only one truth religion, they will keep saying no without even listening to you. In the given scenario, the best way is to make them read your arguments in details, without any disruption or needless interference.

Despite facing a range of difficulties and obstacles as mentioned above, I must admit that I have, also, learned a lot since the very first day in this class. My writing skills have been improved, having found that the actual origin of any knowledge lies in ‘experience’.

Reaching this semester was a success for me, and successful completion of this course will be, definitely, another success. It has been two years since I started writing in English for the first time, and that’s why everything I do in this class is taken as an achievement.

In my experience, there is no end when it comes to learn the English courses, as this course is too broad, covering a number of subjects and topics for further analysis and examination. During this course, for example, I frequently questioned the difference found between a child and an adult. It, really, beats me why is there a distinction between a child and an adult?

Let me cite an example here. Late at night, I was on Skype talking with my brother, who is the student of first grade. During chat, he asked me,"What are some movies or series do you watch?" I replied, "I only watch drama series aired on television." He, then, asked me to reveal the name of those drama series. At this point I did not want to be specific with him because he is a young boy, and then I decided to be honest with him, and said, "I watch ‘The Walking Dead’." Upon his further inquiry, I gave him some background information, but during this exchange of information, our mom managed to hear our discussion, which was, mainly, about zombies at that moment. She said to me with anger, ‘why do you teach a child to watch scary movies?’ She, also, said, ‘he will always be scared of anything’. In contrast, I said to myself that my younger brother would, always, be scared if he remains ignorant about the real face of the life. At that moment, I humbly said sorry to mom for not getting her permission. She accepted my apologies, and allowed to continue our chat on the internet. Then my brother advised me to always keep the volume minimum in order to keep mom away. To my surprise, he informed me that he was, also, a big fan of these types of zombies-oriented TV programmes, mostly watching them on YouTube. I smiled at him because he was smarter than what I expected. He did all that not because he knows nothing about zombies, but the reason is just to know whether we hide something from him or not. Being honest is, probably, one of the keys to look after a child effectively, and for me, few minutes of this talk opened new ways of looking at kids.

In fact, today’s kids live in a more challenging environment compared with previous generation. Yes, this tends to be challenging because of high-tech modern lifestyle, which besides offering torrents of convenience, has facilitated our daily routine activities in a way that requires little labor and efforts.

Starting from the latest cell-phones to those of the wireless desktop computers or laptops, we are, largely, leading a ‘push button’ lifestyle, where things are done in the blink of an eye. That is why a majority of today’s children and young people have become rather lethargic and inactive, whereas many of these couch potatoes call for outside people even to ‘push the button’ for them.

Besides sluggishness, these kids are exposed to several social and ethical vulnerabilities, where a minor negligence from the adults may affect their lives negatively.

This vulnerability pertains to the access of the internet, also known as World Wide Web. Internet, in general, is supposed to be a blessing for the mankind, because it has opened the doors of knowledge, information and enlightenment.

In contrast, the same technological wonder is, also, infected by a number of vulgar, obscene, improper and unethical content scattered all over the internet unfortunately.

As today’s children have an easier access to the internet, many detailed studies and well-conducted researches have shown that internet is becoming a riskier world for our children, as this virtual medium is fully contaminated with ‘dirty’, and ‘unethical’ content, thus paving the way for an ‘engineered delinquency’ among our children.

For example, in a research titled as ‘Long-term study of safe Internet use of young children’, the researcher writes, ‘Children know more about computers and the Internet as compared to their parents'. (Valcke et. al. 2011, 1297)

For me, this revelation is, quite, alarming, because the ‘technological illiteracy’ of parents will endanger the future of our children. No doubt, today’s parents are mostly occupied in their day-to-day activities, giving them fewer opportunities to benefit from the internet, including other high-tech inventions.

On the other hand, the pretext of being ‘engaged’ throughout the day might put these children on higher risk as without any counseling and monitoring, the wrong usage of the internet will lead the children towards a, totally, wrong direction.

What we need is a, somewhat, balanced approach, wherein both parents and children should utilize the internet to the maximum, but in full coordination and guidance with each other’s support.

In an ideal scenario, children must assist their parents in learning the internet, while parents are supposed to guide them about the right use of the internet. This is the only way we can make our children safe from the dangers and hazards offered by the World Wide Web.
