Different Strategies used during Learning

Learning style:

As per the VARK questioner results, it gives a remark of stating that it’s a multimodal learning preference. Multimodal learning style refers to multiple ways of learning things which is preferred by 60% of the population. Multimodal learning person are those who have at least two different learning preferences and a maximum of four types of learning preferences. Multimodal preference learning gives a positive result in gaining information with clear views. In multiple preferences you always get an option of two or three or four various types of strategies which are available in the VARK help-sheets. Multimodal strategies help people in learning and communicating things in a better way than in a particular single strategy. So, it is considered that if a person is scoring a total of more than thirty in the VARK questioner he prefers multimodal learning strategies in understanding thing in different methods (Fleming, 2011).

List of learning Strategies:

Visual learning: Visual learning helps a person to understand things by using visual association, visual imagery, and flash card. These visual learners use note pads to take down the list of things for the reminder. Visual learning provides enough time for recording and sorting out things easily while solving the problems. The visual learners always create a picture outline of the question before they start answering things (Learning Styles, 2013).

Aural learning: Aural learning is based on three strategies which is followed by the learners while collecting the information, while reviewing the notes, and finally performing well during exams as well as during assignments. Aural learners collect information by attending classes and tutorials, by discussing the topic with others and teachers, or by remembering certain suitable examples, stories or jokes. Then while reviewing the notes they speak with others based on the topic in order to understand it better. Then at the time of preparing for exams they prefer places where there is silence for recalling the thoughts (Fleming, 1992).

Reading/Writing learning: The reading and writing style of learning comprises of handout, textbooks, and lecture notes for the purpose of studying. The reading/writing learners always convert all the flow chart, picture explanations into wards. The reading/writing learners always prefers information given in the manuals, dictionaries, and glossaries (Learning Styles, 2013).

Kinesthetic learning: Kinesthetic learning is based on learning things based on working on the topics practically. These kinesthetic learners understand things only when they touch and feel the same as it appears. These kinesthetic learners always experience the things while learning the same and they feel that when there is involvement of more sensitivity it becomes easier to remember the thing (LEARNING STRATEGIST, 2013).

Comparison preferred learning strategies to the identified strategies for preferred learning style:

As per the identified strategies it shows multimodal and as per the VARK preferred learning strategies there are four styles of learning such as visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic. When identified strategies are compared to preferred strategies it shows that multimodal preference has an option of two or three or four modes of learning interaction with various people. The multimodal learners will always have a positive reaction than the learners who prefer any one particular mode of learning. People who prefer multimodal learning feel difficulty in learning or communicating if they don’t have more than one strategy. Whereas, people who prefer single strategy feels it easy when they follow one particular mode of learning and communicating the things. But it is also true that multimodal learners can get adjusted to any kind of VARK strategies and it is difficult for the learners who have adopted a single style of strategies (Fleming, 2011).

Is it good to have change in learning habits?

Yes! Bringing change in learning habits such as Multimodal learners may be more comfortable in receiving and rendering information better than those which emphasize with a single preferred profile. When we adopt a habit of multimodal strategies it helps to understand any mode of teaching. But still there is a disadvantage in adopting multimodal learning strategies because they require minimum of more than two styles of strategies while learning. So when a new style is adopted in learning habits it does have both advantages and disadvantages, which is left to personal preference of learning habits (Fleming, 2006).

Summary of VARK learning assessment:

VARK is a more familiar form of assessment used in our society for exchanging information which is coded as "V" for visual, "A" for aural, "R" for read/write, and "K" for kinesthetic. In visual form of learning, people prefer to collect information through graph, chart, and flow diagram. In aural form of assessment, the learners prefer to acquire information by listening through lectures and audio system. As per read/write style of assessment, people refer to collect information in the form of handout, textbook, and in any other written format. According to the kinesthetic learning assessment prefers collecting information by experimenting things. Comprising of all the four learning assessment is the multimodal learning assessment where a person prefers more than one style of learning assessment in collecting information (Fleming, 1995).
