1.1 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP STYLE

My current leadership style is Participative, which I found from surveys. I have completed two surveys online and I attached those surveys with this assignment. This style is used when leaders do not make their decisions alone. In this style of leadership, everyone can able to give his or her opinions. In participative Leadership style, Leaders encourage their employees to share their ideas for making better decision. The final decision will be taken by the leader only, but it is just that the leader is allowing all its team members to participate in a decision making process so that Group members feel engaged in the process and are more motivated and creative

Strengths:

One of my biggest strengths is my communication skills. I can work very well with all kinds of people, and understand that everyone has different perspectives and ideas.

My second strength is to make good relationship with other people. No two people are alike and even the thinking of no two people will match. Hence, there is always scope for dispute within group members. In such cases, you need to be the peacemaker. Thus, relationship building within a team, and outside of it, is one of the most important leadership strengths. I always try to accept my Mistakes. There will be times when as a leader and as a group, you may fail. This will be a hard time for you but you need to understand that you have to be patient. Lashing out at your team members, blaming them for failure will only add to your resentment. For example, If the success is shared, then so must the failure should be shared. So accept your mistake, learn from it and try to improvise as a leader.

I have a can do attitude and I am also a multitasking person and can work under pressure. Listen carefully is one of my strength. You need to listen to your team members because they are the only ones that will tell you if you go wrong at any point of time. Furthermore, listening will make sure that you connect with your team members on a personal level, which will improve the performance of your team greatly.

Weaknesses:

A weakness of mine is that I get nervous when speaking in front of groups. I have very poor time management skills and decision-making skills too. It can be due to my problem of taking many responsibilities at a time and getting loaded up. Lack of experience may be the prime factor, which affects my weakness. IN some cases, I fail to pay enough attention to the detail, which leads me to lack of adequate planning. Sometimes if the work does not interests me I sometimes lose interest, gets bored/impatient, which sometimes makes me to take needless risks.

1.2 LEADERSHIP THEORIES:

Leadership theories can be described as different approaches to leadership and how leaders are created and how special type of leaders lead. There are many different projected theories. Here I am going to describe three most important theories Participative, Behavioral and contingency theory.

1) Participative theory:

Participative leadership, also known as democratic leadership, is the type of leadership style where the team members participate in the decision-making process. Participative leadership theories suggest that the ideal leadership style is one that takes the input of others into account. These leaders encourage participation and contributions from group members and help group members feel more applicable and dedicated to the decision-making process. This theory helps me to work with team members and feel me to be more involved in the management process, like when i am doing my activities at my work place I always participative with my team members as well as with my management.

2) Behavioral theory:

Behavioral theory is a big leap from Trait Theory, in that it assumes that leadership capability can be learned, rather than being inherent. So Behavioral theories of leadership are based upon the belief that great leaders are made, not born A behavioral theory is relatively easy to develop, as you simply assess leadership success and the actions of leaders. Rooted in behaviorism, this leadership theory focuses on the actions of leaders not on mental qualities or internal states. According to this theory, people can learn to become leaders through teaching and observation. So I also want to improve my leadership skills by choosing Behavioral theory and want to adopt the skills from my selected leaders.

3) Contingency theory:

Contingency theory is a class of behavioral theory that claims that there is no one best way of leading and design organizational structure. And that a leadership style that is effective in some situations may not be successful in others.

An effect of this is that leaders who are very effective at one place and time may become unsuccessful either when transplanted to another situation or when the factors around them change.

This type of theory is very important for change management because it is related to transformational leadership style. I think if any kind of emergency happen leaders should change their style according to the situation and try to handle the situation as early as possible so that people feel that he is the best leader and he know how to handle the situation. So I also want to apply contingency theory when something wrong happen at my workplace.

1.3 LEADERSHIP ROLE MODELS

Leadership profiles

Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes. Everyone wants to be a good leader in life and we are leading our family, team or community in reality. A successful leader is a real team player who realizes their full potential. Today's leaders know the efforts of their team.

My first leader is Graeme Joy who is one of the most paying attention and motivating of all business presenters in Australasia. He is perhaps best known as joint leader and navigator of the International North Pole mission where he became the first and only Australian to ski to the North Pole.

In his seminars, lectures, and training programs Graeme draws remarkable parallels between success in voyage and success in business. He said few people are better placed to forthcoming the importance of leadership styles, effective decision-making, winning performance and highly motivated teams.

Graeme's presentations are always highly praised by clients for their business applicability, take-home value and delivery of their key results.

Leadership, team success, goal setting, selecting and building the right team, individual and team motivation, planning and preparation are the main thrusts of Graeme’s corporate lectures.  Most of all he illustrates the importance of commitment to excellence by each person involved.

His vision is to create and develop commitment within team and Define success and the measurement of performance. He wants empowerment at all workplaces so that he can find good leaders within organization. He also believes in creating a sense of urgency which is critical for the leader. He believes high performance leaders are excellent communicators and also recognizing the personality types within organization and communicating effectively. Another good quality of Graeme that I like is the nurturing of a positive attitude which he stresses is more important that a skill base. He thinks Empathy is a quality of the high performance leader and his team.

The Legacy of the High Performance Leader Importantly, Graeme believes that leadership can be learned and shows how you can become a High Performance Leader by concentrating on some simple fundamentals.

For my second leader i am choosing the New Zealand Business leader named Mike Daniell who is Chief Executive of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a manufacturer, designer and marketer of products and systems for use in respiratory care, acute care, and the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Based in New Zealand, their products and systems are sold in around 120 countries worldwide.

After researching on the internet about the business leaders, Mike Daniell comes in top New Zealand Business leaders. Mr Daniell served as the General Manager of Fisher &Paykel’s healthcare business from May 1990 until November 2001. From 1979 until May 1990, Mr Daniell held various positions in the business, including product design engineer and technical manager. Mr Daniell has more than 30 years of international healthcare business experience. Mr Daniell received his Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering with honours from the University of Auckland. Mr Daniell is a member of the Council of the University of Auckland

I choose mike Daniell because he is a participate type of leader he always take input from his staff members and employees as well. When Daniell is back at the East Tamaki headquarters, he isn't hard to find because he doesn't have an office and his everyday desk is one of many in an open-plan space where engineers, accountants, sales and marketing staff sit together. He believes in motivation,Empowerment and delegation.

He is proud of his team, many of whom have also been with the company for decades, and downplays his own role in its success. "My contribution is relatively small."

Daniell has a vision to bring prosperity for the country and his peoples as well by offering them more job opportunities and good products as we all know that Fish & Paykel. He is concerned about the nation's ability to keep its brightest brains. He sees wages and housing affordability as key issues.

Benchmarking Criteria:

According to me the qualities of leader that I use for me are:

Setting goals: - I know Setting up specific goals is an integral part of building leadership skills and increasing your leadership potential, which makes success likely so I have goals in my life which I want to achieve by my passion and hard work.

Motivation: - inspiration and motivation are very important in leadership. So as any leader I should be self-motivated and thereafter with passion I could motivate others including my team members.

Communication skills: To lead and convince others it is very important to deliver the message clearly, accurately and in brief. To make it more effective firstly I want to improve my language skills.

Making decisions: - To achieve goals it is very important to make good decisions, so I want to make good decision based on logical valuation in my life.

Listening Skills: - Good listener can be successful leader. Listening to others can get better ideas and views. So I want to be good listener to get information and more ideas from others.

Planning ahead: - I want to plan ahead because everyone firstly needs plans to achieve goal. If you set a goal, but you have no plans then you can’t able to achieve them, then you have wasted your time.

Straight forward:- I am very straight forward type of person I don’t know it is my positive point or negative but its in my nature which I want to change because at some situations it will create problems to me.

Section 2: 2.1 Benchmarking Tools

Leadership is a vast scope that has no boundaries none can actually describe its area, method, traits, or other specifications. For example a housewife can be a leader for her own home and a student can be a leader of his own group or class etc. leadership styles are different as there are democratic, charismatic, autocratic etc. (Leadership New Zealand, 2011) Here are some Benchmarking tools given below:

.

2.2 Reflection:

My leadership style is Participative style as I’m capable to work with the team where everyone is involved with each other .i can guide them to achieve our goals as a team.

The vision in my life is to become a successful business woman and be a person who will be contributing to the betterment of the society. Currently I am working in a fruit & vege shop as a supervisor. After few years I will start my own business which will not do any harm to the environment and will be environment friendly. Out of all the profit I will make, I will donate some part of my earnings to the organisations that help poor students complete their studiesBench Marking tools

Being bought up in a multicultural environment of India and work experience in several industries in both India and New Zealand, I could polish my leadership style and Management capabilities. Realistically, the kind of leadership style I am influenced by/followed was Participative It is due to the strong influence from the work place, the leaders I worked with and the settings which existed that give ultimate power for the position of 'Leader', who give instructions, make decisions and implement those decisions by himself/herself. I could also visualize from the outcomes, how successful they were as leaders in achieving their goals. As a cultural aspect, being bought up in Sikh background I was influenced by the characters I came across in our holy book Guru Granth Sahib. Also influenced by real life characters, that’s why I did have some qualities of a democratic leader inside me. So at some instance, I was in a dilemma to choose a proper leadership style. But, my higher education and work behavior in New Zealand helped me to mould my leadership style from Autocratic to Participative and also combined with Transformational leadership style.

Having qualities of both Participative and Transformational Leader my strength was to inspire and motivate followers, strong interpersonal and communication skills, Ability to manage stress, Multitasking ability, Understand the strength and weakness of fellow followers etc. At the same time, there are a few weaknesses which I struggle with being a leader. They are, time management skills, taking all the responsibilities and getting loaded up and also it becomes so confusing when it comes to prioritizing and organizing work load.

My aspiration is to become a Manager within five years from now. At this moment, I realize I need to gain more and more skills to achieve my goal. I require training and motivation in the area of expertise. Influenced by those leaders with similar leadership styles, I am sure I will be able to modify my way of doing things.
