Executive Summary

The name of the business is Best Enterprise Limited, the company is a public limited shoes company that has branched across the globe. Best Enterprise Limited aims to provide quality footwear with unforgettable services. Best Enterprise Limited was founded in 2003 and has grown successfully over the years, its main branch is in New York and the company employs over 2000 people.

TASK 1

One of the main things that must be looked at is the intercultural and global challenges that may affect Best Enterprise Limited in their new location. Some of these factors may be:

Human Resource Policies

Human resource policies vary in every country; this is due to the cultures that are practiced. Human resource polies may impact working days, working hours, leaves, labour costs and performance management.

Language

It is well known that for business to operate efficiently a common language must be known, but along with that there is the case when individuals speak the same language but the words do not mean the same thing, this possible because of the difference in cultures.

The level of corruption in the country.

Although the level of corruption in the country is not a topic that is often investigated it is very important as it relates to the natural success of the business. The ideal environment that a foreign business would like to enter into is one that allows all its enterprises to be on a level plain field.

Technology

The consideration of technology is very much necessary; Best Enterprise Limited sells over fifty percent (50%) of their customers online. Thus research must be done of the level of technology that is in the country. It may also be considered to only provide services at stores if technology is not available in the country. Another method that can be considered is to find ways to provide serviced through the level of technology available as well as the normal means that are used at other branches.

The Culture.

Culture is a big topic and just the same it has a large effect on human resource. When it comes to the root of success of a business the business’s human resource must be considered. Thus it can be said without satisfied and efficient employees a company will never succeed. Culture is one of the factors that can make employees less efficient. For example an employee’s work schedule, ethics and morals are based mostly upon his culture.

Human Resource Plan

There a several techniques that can be considered for forecasting, the ones seen most fit for Best Enterprise Limited are managerial judgment, trend analysis and Job Analysis.

Managerial judgment is very simple; in this managers sit together and discuss a figure of labourers which they think will be needed in the future.

Trend analysis is one of the most commonly used methods in projecting human resources. The trend analysis is based on an organizational index and includes a variety of calculations.

Jamaica like every other country has labor laws and trade unions that ensure that the laws are followed and employees are treated fairly.

After an investigation was one it can be said that Jamaica has numerous laws that must be followed but are sometimes not maintained due to the lack of knowledge of employees or just because the employee’s think they can’t do any better.

Some of the labor laws that will affect Best Enterprise Limited include:

Labor relations and industrial disputes act, 1975

This act states that “This stipulates the rights of the worker in relation to trade union membership and industrial action. Establish a permanent arbitration panel in the IDT. 

Sets out its functions, powers and also establishes the Boards of Inquiry.  Provide for settlement of disputes in essential services. Settle dispute in other establishments of national interest. To deal with the right of workers in respect of trade union membership” by Jamaica Trade Union.

Because of this labour law Best Enterprise Limited must ensure that there is a Human Resource department to cater for the specific needs of each employee within the act stated.

 

Employment payment act, 1974

According to Jamaica Trade Union this states that the employment “Applies to all workers including household workers, however is excludes civil service workers in central and local government departments. Redundancy payment for workers dismissed for reasons of redundancy. Notice payment in the event of redundancy. Redundancy payment on the basis of years of service and sets minimum standard of payment.”

The employment act of 1974 affects Best Enterprise Limited because of the new provisions that must be made. The company make some sort of reserve so that they are able pay employees ion the case redundancy, also the company has to ensure that they do not pay employees less than the minimum wage mark of the country.

For the company to operate It needs effective employees, therefore company needs a recruitment an selection strategy. A strategy developed to aid Best Enterprise Limited to get quality workers is outlined below:

Identify the vacancy and evaluate the need.

This includes the company recognizing that there is a vacancy in the company and deciding whether a new employee is needed or if the responsibilities of the job can be taken up by other employees.

Develop position description.

The description of a position is the basic layout of the responsibilities and expectation that the job entails along with the skills and qualification required to apply for the job position.

Developing a recruiting plan.

This is deciding how the job will be advertised, and through what process or channel the interview will be done.

Selecting the search committee

This is the step where Best Limited Enterprise decides on the employees or members of the organization that will be present and helping in the employee selection process. The human resource manager plays a key role in the committee along with the department manager of where the job is located.

Review applicants and develop a short list.

It is almost impossible to meet with everyone that applies for a job position, so a short list must be created. The short list should be based upon whether the applicant has the criteria asked for and special skills that will to uplift the company.

Conduct interviews.

This is the step where the applicant is interviewed by key members of Best Enterprise Limited, this is done to get a feel of the characteristics of the applicant and to judge whether they would make a positive addition to the team.

Select and hire.

In this step an applicant is finally selected an contract is in the process of negotiation.

Finalize recruitment.

This is the last step and this is after the contract is signed and the applicant is an official employee of the firm.

Best Enterprise Limited wants employees to feel secure, thus they employ employees under a contract. The type of contract that we thought was best for Best Enterprise Limited is Fixed- term Contracts.

This type of contract is not permanent but it has a start and end time and can be renewed if services made a positive impact on the business.

The fixed term contract also allows employees a number of benefits, including pension.

Another benefit of the fixed term contract is that it allows employees to feel secure or the time within their contract, and also makes employees work harder so that their contract can be renewed after it has expired.

Compensation and reward can be a big form of motivation for employees. The types of rewards that are practiced at Best Enterprise Limited are:

Salary

The salary is basic, but for recognized extra-ordinary performance an employees may be offered a bonus for a time period.

Job satisfaction

Best Enterprise Limited hopes to make a work environment that is satisfactory to its staff, but there is always more that can be done for our members of staff that are over achievers. A simple thing as I mini fridge is very motivational to an employee, and it makes that employee feel as if they have worth to the business, thus creating a form of job satisfaction.

Job security

Through all time, people have tried to keep their jobs, so they can meet their personal needs and the needs of their family. Rewarding an employee by extending their contract at the business is very motivational. It will decrease the amount time that employee spends to worry about his/ her job and will allow them to use time to be even more productive to the business.

Job promotion

Best Enterprise Limited recognizes that nobody wants to stay the same place in an organization; everyone wants to aim for better. Thus Best Enterprise Limited finds itself sourcing employees from inside the organization before outsourcing. It gives employees the opportunity to try and uplift them self.

There a lot of methods that can be used to evaluate a company’s staff, Best Limited Enterprise decided to use the following methods:

Quantity

The quantity of products sold by an employee is easy to keep track of because of the nature of the business. Thus quantity is a good method that can be used to show he true level of performance o employees on the job.

Tardiness

An absent employee is not able to perform as well as the company wants, thus a roster must be kept for this factor to evaluate. Employees must be present at work at the starting time to the finishing time unless other arrangements were made with their direct supervisor.

Manager appraisal

This is where the manager or the direct supervisor of the employee evaluates the employee. This is a good method to use because the supervisor is able to see the employee through the work week naturally doing their job. The only fault that can be caused by this method is the possibility of the manager being bias.

In conclusion a human resource is a very beneficial tool when made properly. Having this plan makes the human resource manager work more efficiently and more accurately.
