Introduction:

Sweet Dreams Ltd is a family owned company and small organization in West Yorkshire dealing with high quality boiled sweets. Business is running smoothly and doing well at the moment. Though to race with market trends and remain leaders of the market they need to make some changes by reformation the entire working of the organization. The management is undertaking new procedures and practices in HB department first and then they are going to implement those measures and outcomes for the whole organization. The HB department is divided into two sections one for production and one for packing. The production section is staffed by men and packing section is staffed by women.

Problems faced by Sweet Dreams Ltd:

After proper analysis of the working and formation of Sweet Dreams Ltd. The company is facing a number of problems and issues associated with employees in some of its departments. These problems are going to affect the company ‘s success and Growth.

High labor turnover:

The major issue of company is that managers and supervisors don’t stick with the company for a longer time. There is change of six new mangers in eight years which affects the performance of the organization. The motivations and no single control factor are also reason for employees leaving the company.

Lack of job satisfaction:

Satisfaction is an important aspect of doing a work efficiently. The employees of sweet dream Ltd are facing the problem of low job satisfaction. The supervisor is not paying attention towards the needs and requirements of and he also faces the same problem. The employees fell uninterested of doing same repetitive jobs again and again and some jobs prerequisite more physical efforts. The supervisor sometimes forced them to accomplish targets which are impossible for them.

Lack of motivation and no reward and recognition:

The company is lacking in motivating the employees to perform better and efficient because of strict influence and extra workloads which demotivates them. There is no performance monitoring system in an organization which can evaluate the performance of each employee as some jobs are more challenging and required more physical efforts. So employees want better financial recognition of doing those jobs. This can motivate them to perform tasks efficiently and helps in reducing the wastage of material.

Lack of communication:

There is a lack of proper communication system within the organization. The packing section has no information about goods coming in from production department due to poor communication between two sections which are interlinked. There is a lack of proper communication from managers and supervisors which ultimately leads to misunderstanding between staff and management. The cooperation is hardly observable within the organization because of narrow approach adopted by many in organizations which also lead to lack of communication between departments and employees.

Poor strategic thinking and no goal oriented vision:

There Sweet Dream Ltd also lack of proper strategic thinking about the organization and its operation. The company is also facing the issue of lack of control on demand and suppy as there is no suitable place where the goods can be stored to meet the demand. There is also lack of proper planning as unskilled workers are used to cope up with high demand and when there is low demand for production they are transferred to perform worst jobs which is totally resented by employees.

Poor equipment’s lead to conflicts and issues:

The Sweet Dreams Ltd is also facing the problem of poor equipment’s in the company. All the complex machinery in the company is 10 years old so breakdown is usual in such case which causes conflicts between the departments and maintenance engineers in the organization. These conflicts affect the organization and production quality. It also effect the company efficiency as much of the time is wasted on conveying these blames between departments and maintenance engineers for breakdown.

Inadequate warehouse space:

Another problem faced by Sweet Dream Ltd is shortage of space available. The company doesn’t have a large warehouse so there is no chance for buffer stock to meet the demand for product in the market. Due to inadequate space for packing and storage it indirectly affects the quality and quantity of product which would hamper the growth and development of the company.

Lack of Training and Development:

The Sweet Dream Ltd is also facing major problems of lack of proper training and development of its employees. The efficiency and effectiveness of any company depend on its well trained employees but in case of Sweet Dream there no proper Job training, Progress and direction programs for their employees to understand their work and develop skills to perform their tasks with efficiencies. It takes more than 2 years for employees to achieve proper skills for a job. Long time duration for such a company and can affect its quality. The inadequate of opportunities for training and development also de-motivates the employees to for perform the job effectively.

Improper or poor Management:

The Sweet Dreams Ltd also faces the problem of poor management in the organization. There are no proper rules or flow charts which management follows to eradicate the errors or problems. The production departments always blame management and supervisors for organizing work badly. There was a lack of cooperation within the organization it was all because of poor and lack of well-organized management. The attitude of management towards staff is not good and also managed in lacking in proper planning, organizing, directing and controlling.

Iterative tasks or improper talent management:

The employees in a company have to perform a same repetitive task which makes them feel bored and de-motivates them in doing their job effectively and efficiently. To earn the highest pay in the company the employees should be able to perform all types of jobs in organization but as seen employees only uses one or two skills and rest of talent get useless because of doing the same tasks repetitively which dissatisfied them.

Poor Cultural environment:

The main issue in the company is that there are interpersonal conflicts within the organization. There is always a cold war going between the employees in production department where workers are interdependent on each other because of insular behavior adopted by them which also creates confusion between management and labour.

Introduction:

After analysis and going through each problem faced by The Sweet Dream Ltd there are a number of solutions which can help the Sweet Dream Limited to tackle with those problems and helps in progress, growth and development of a working system and organization.

Human Resource Management:

Human resource management is an important part of any organization as it involves all decisions and action related to management which affects the nature of the relationship between the organization and its employees. According to Torrington and Chapman in "Human resource management is a series of activities which first enables working people and the organization which uses their skills to agree about the objectives and the nature of their working relationships, and secondly, ensure that the agreement is fulfilled" (Torrington et al., 2008 ). So it’s important for an organization to have a well-structured and well managed human resource management so that it can work effectively and efficiently. It seems that Sweet Dreams Ltd is lacking behind in managing well managed HRM in their organization if HRM is properly managed in Sweet Dream Ltd large number of identified issues can be dealt with appropriate manner.

Human Resource Model:

The Sweet Dream Ltd can adopt the Warwick model which suited them best and is perfect for them in order to tackle with the issues they are facing. This is a Harvard model and is very effective. This model also helps in giving the identification of external surroundings. It does not predict the outcomes but it can give a clear picture of polices and will help Sweet Dream Ltd in getting greater performance ( Beardwell & Claydon, 2010).

Performance management:

Performance management helps in enhancing and improving the efficiency of an organization and its employees. Performance management will be very much beneficial for Sweet dream Ltd if it’s very well organized and managed. It will help Sweet dream Ltd to expose the efficiency and skills of its employees and to choose the best one from the staff. It also helps employees to know what organization is expecting from them and how their performance will be measured. It can be implemented on individual, team and department and also on organization level (J. Mullins, 2010). According to Armstrong & Baron "A process which contributes to the effective management of individuals and teams in order to achieve high levels of organizational performance. As such, it establishes shared understanding about what is to be achieved and an approach to leading and developing people which will ensure that it is achieved" (Armstrong & Baron, 2002). It will also help in developing a free and honest way of management. It’s a continuous process which will help Sweet Dreams Ltd to measure its management performance and to take proper decision related to the progress and development of the organization. The PM makes employees more responsible for their efforts and they will also strain for improvement in them. The PM is essential for increasing the productivity and quality of organization. It is also going to help Sweet Dream Ltd to improve behavior of staff and their improvement. PM helps in improving in achieving the targets and objectives of the company. The manager is an important player in it which helps doesn't only motivate, coaching, enabling performance and development opportunities but also plays an important role in monitoring and if necessary revising performance expectation and objectives (Torrington et al, 2008). Sweet Dream Ltd can include 360 degree feedback system into the organization which is going to help it in dealing with issues by getting feedback from subordinates, employees and customers.

Training and Development:

Training and development is a vital area in every organization. It is of very high importance to Sweet dream Ltd to maintain effective management. T & D are also a major functional area of human resource management. Training is required to gain essential work-related skills, techniques and knowledge in order to improve individual and the organization effectiveness. According to Kenneth N. Wexley "training and development refers to planned efforts by an organization to facilitate the learning of job-related behavior on the part of its employees the term behavior is used in the broad sense to include any knowledge and skill acquired by an employee through practice" (Wexley, 1991). Sweet Dream Ltd is also dealing with the major problem of not having well qualified employees at the proper time and its management is also being affected by which ultimately affects their quality and product. So it’s vital for Sweet Dream Ltd to have a training and development of its employees which not only helps them in gaining knowledge and skills but also gives them appreciation and helps in motivating the employees and management.

Routine: Sweet Dream Ltd is a major issue that its employees' behavior is not acceptable which creates conflicts within departments but if they will adopt culture webs routine behavior which will make understand the member or employees of company how to behave with each other and also with the outsider of the organization.

Rituals: It will give sweet dream limited an advantage to make their employees know the value of good communication within the organization to change their behavior and it will also help the organization to choose a formal organizational processor to implement informal process.

Control System: The employees of Sweet Dream Ltd are not happy with companies reward system and they feel there is no financial recognition for their work which de motivates them to perform their targets but if the company will implement a well organized control system where employees or individual work is measured with standards with the help of well monitoring system and also open gates for reward and promotion system which definitely will help them to motivate their employees ( Mullins, 2010)

Motivation is a vital factor for productivity and effectiveness of the organization. If employees are motivated and are satisfied with their job it’s ultimately going to be an advantage and benefit for an organization. Motivation is a dynamic force which makes employees work and perform their task and goals more effectively and with high performance. It would be productive and beneficial for Sweet Dream Ltd to have motivated employees in their organization which is a big issue in their organization and are lacking in it. Their employees and management are not fully satisfied with their job which creates trouble and mess in the organization. The motivation and satisfaction for the job will create an effective environment for Sweet Dream Ltd. The employees will work with full effectiveness and efficiently to achieve their targets and goal which ultimately will help them in fulfilling their own expectation and needs. According to Kathy Schofield, Director of Human Resources, HFC Bank "You don’t motivate individuals. You provide them with an environment to be self-motivated. It is a personal Decision, but its management’s job to provide the right environment". ( Mullins, 2010)

Motivation theory of Herzberg’s Two factor for Sweet Dream Ltd:

Herzberg’s two factor motivation theory seems to be best for Sweet dream Ltd to motivate its employees. The Herzberg theory is based on two factors that are Hygiene and motivator and absent of these in an organization makes employees unsatisfied.

Hygiene or maintenance for Sweet Dream Ltd includes everything about motivation of employee and makes them to perform their work with competence and effectiveness. It points out on job salary and employee’s responsibility and also the interpersonal relation within the organization. It helps in creating such an environment in the organization where employees work can be measured by and monitored with the standards and also make quality supervision. If these two factors are well managed in Sweet Dream Ltd its employees will be fully satisfied with the company and makes them work more efficiently and give productive results.

To dealt with issues related to employees in Sweet Dream Ltd its better and beneficial for the organization to have a sound and well organized employee relation policy for not affecting the working of the organization and also help in boosting the employee effectiveness and efficiency. According to John Bratton "Employee relations are a set of human resource practices that seek to secure commitment and compliance with organization goals and standards through the involvement of employees in decision-making and by managerial disciplinary action" ( Bratton & Gold, 2003). The relation between employees in Sweet Dream Ltd will also be influenced by the nature work, Size and also type of organization. It also depends on what type of structure they have and they way of doing work (Mullins, 2010).

Concept of Learning Organization for Sweet Dream Ltd:

A learning organization is a new notion introduced to maximize the productivity and enhance effectiveness of the organization. The Sweet Dream Ltd is a private manufacturing organization and in order to run its business in India it has to follow the rules and regulation given by the labor ministry of India related to the private manufacturing organization. The framework and rules of India related to private organization are very different from the United Kingdom.

It is the labor ministry of India who sets up laws and regulation related to setting up of the business unit and also related to the employment. The industries in India are divided into two categories factory unit and industrial unit. The Sweet dream Ltd comes under the manufacturing unit which is a factory. So all the rules and regulation related to workers and employed are set up by the factory Law 1948.

The sweet dreams Ltd have to follow different rules and regulation of Indian factory Law 1948 to set up its unit in India. There are different laws for the workers benefit and also for the safeguard of the environment which Sweet Dream Ltd has to follow in order to survive in India.

The maximum hours the worker can work per week is forty eight hours and twelve hours overtime per week. There should be one holiday in every week for employees. The sweets business is not very famous in India but the Sweet Dreams Ltd can have a competitive edge if they introduce something new in sweets or the structure of sweets. In India people usually purchase more sweets on festivals and Sweet Dream Ltd can grab the market if they introduce different type of sweets for different festivals and have different varieties according to age. Skills and acquaintance learned from Managing people in the organization:

Learning is always important and beneficial for every person. It helps to gain more knowledge and new experience of dealing with the situation. Mezirow defines learning as "Learning is the process of making a new or revised interpretation and meaning of an experience, which guides subsequent understanding, appreciation and action" ( Mezirow, 1990).

The purpose of this module was to understand and learn the importance of managing human resource in the organization. The effectiveness and efficiency of the organization depend on the activities and decision making performed by the mangers. The human resource is the blood line of the organization and it is directly and indirectly affected by the managements actions and activities. This module puts light on learning of making effective decisions for oneself and organization. The human resource management is of great importance for the organization and it should be managed in a positive and effective manner. The organization cannot run on its own, it's the human resource which runs the organization and makes strong foundation. ( L. J. Mullins, 2010).

Action plan: The experience and knowledge must not be learned only but the importance and effectiveness of it depends on applying and relating it to an organization in which we work or would work in the future. It would be our key object after completing this module.

Description: The importance of HRM can be exposed from learning this module and also the significance of managing HRM in the organization.

Feelings: The new techniques and concepts were learned from this module and also their importance in applying. It makes me to comparing new learnings to past experience I have in the organization.

Evaluation: Different concepts were learned in this module about working and managing people in the organization such as a learning organization, effective and visionary leadership, employee motivation etc.

Analysis: The two way communication learning style of tutor and also working in groups makes me to understand the importance of HRM easily. It helps me to learn the new skills, experience and knowledge about the working and managing of people in the organization.

Conclusion: The growth and productivity of any organization depend on good management of its people and resources. This module gives us depth knowledge about the importance of HRM for smooth running of the organization.

The Sweet Dreams Ltd is facing some of the issues and problems in the company which can them into trouble and can hamper its growth and productivity but if the company will implement some of suggested and important HRM concepts it can overcome from these issues and can be more effective in its work.
