Fish oil is found in salmon and tuna. It is found as a liquid oil and in oil-filled capsules. They are rich in Omega-3 acids. Omega-3 acid is necessary for a healthy heart and a good blood flow. It has anti-inflammatory properties and help in raising the HDL levels and lowering the triglyceride levels. It is said that using fish oil alone might not show drastic results. But, in combination with other natural supplements, it has a significant effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Herbs- These herbs are safe to use and are considered very healthy when taken in correct dosages. It is always better to take these herbs in a combination rather than taking these products separately. It is proved that these products work well in combinations and hence are more effective.

Red yeast rice- There is a very little research which shows that red yeast rice can help in lowering the "LDL" cholesterol. Earlier it was found that red yeast rice was found in the supplement "Cholestin".

This supplement becomes ineffective if the person is using ezetimibe (Zetia), which is a prescription medication given for reducing cholesterol levels.

Blond psyllium: It is found in seed husk and Metamucil. It helps in reducing total cholesterol and "LDL" levels. The side effects of this herb include gastric trouble, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation and nausea.

Flaxseed: It helps in reducing the triglycerides. The side effects include gas, bloating and diarrhea. This interacts with certain medications such as aspirin, clopidogrel and warfarin (Coumadin).

Garlic extract: Research has proved that garlic helps in reducing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Side effects of this product include bad breath, body odor, heartburn, gastric trouble, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Garlic may prolong the bleeding time and clotting time. So it should not be taken prior to any surgery or with blood thinning drugs.

Guggulipid: This is the gum resin of myrrh tree. This product was said to reduce the total cholesterol levels and LDL levels significantly. However a clinical trial performed in U.S, showed negative results. Hence further research has to be done to prove the efficacy of this drug.

Green tea extract: It helps in lowering the LDL cholesterol levels. Green tea helps in protecting against the post meal in the fat levels in people with high cholesterol.

Oat bran: This ingredient is found in oatmeal and whole oats. It helps in reducing the total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. It might cause gastric trouble or bloating.

Sitostanol: This is found in some margarines such as Benecol. It helps in reducing total cholesterol levels and LDL levels. It might cause diarrhea.

Natural products which have dietary fiber, soy foods and plant compounds which are similar to cholesterol can effectively reduce LDL cholesterol.

Fiber: Plant foods such as vegetables, legumes, unrefined grains contain dietary fiber which helps in reducing cholesterol levels.

Phytosterols: Phytosterols are plant compounds which are similar to cholesterol. These compounds are found in very small amounts in foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. They decrease the levels of cholesterol by interfering with intestinal absorption of cholesterol. Plant stanols have a significant effect on the total cholesterol level but does not show any effect on the HDL or triglyceride levels.
