ABSTRACT

Women’s rights is a controversial issue over the world all time. Why do we talk about ``gender and development” rather than`` women and development “ ? Talking about women as a group raises a number of difficulties. The concept of ` women’s position’ in society suggests that there is some universal position that all women occupy in all societies. The truth is that not only can there be no simple statement of a universal ` position’s women” but that even with in most societies it is not possible to speak of women as a group sharing common interests. This paper, based on secondary research, discusses three questions of how women’s life to be took place over the world, why some of women still discriminated against and what the authorities should be done. Based on the findings of the research, the paper draws the conclusion that although many women still have difficulties at the present, there is actually hope that this issue will be eliminated in the future.

Introduction

Women’s rights , or in other words, gender equality, is the issue of concern in the world of all time. Women’s rights around the world is the vital indicator to consider about global prosperity. However, are all women today have rights in all areas? Numerous issues still exist in all areas of the life, ranging from the cultural, political to the economic. Women’s rights is believed the most controversial matter over decades. In the words of a Brazilian woman: `` We are more than half the world’s population, and we are the mothers of the other half” ( Julia Cleves Mosses 1994, p.5). Therefore, this problem become more and more important in modern society. Besides, gender equality promote the reasons of child existence and advancement for all of society, so the influence of women’s rights and equal opportunity should not be underestimated ( Anup Shah 2010). By the above reasons, this paper, with purpose of establishing the gender equality in society, discusses the questions of how women’s life to be took place over the world, why some of women still be discriminated against and what methods authorities have taken to solve this controversial issue.

2. Discussion of findings

2.1. How women’s life take place over the world

Julia Cleves ( 1994, p.5) pointed out that an amount of employment in different societies have been implemented which describe that there are very few activities which are almost always done by men, and even fewer that are always carried out by women. In some societies women do hard work while the man do cooking; in others men make most of the clothes and women build the houses. In one research of 50 different kind of work in 186 all the societies, only 14 activities were enforced harshly by men in nearly all the societies. These were things like smelting ores, mental working, mining and butchering. No one has offered any really convincing explanations as to why these particular roles to be reserved for men. For example, in Vietnam, women are active in wide variety of tasks, many of which would be thought of as more typically men’s work in other society. Furthermore, many poor women could not endure the withdrawn and relaxed family life exigency by the ideal of domesticity ( Jean V. Matthews, 1997, p.7). Not only that they have to do all housewives. They tend the children, they obtain the family food supply, whether from family fields or the local supermaeket; they wash the clothes, at the river or in the washing machine, and they may add a little to the family income by poorly paid, part-time work that does not jeopardise their main work. To give an idea of the variety of tasks which women undertake, let us look at a typical day’s work for a woman in Nepal: Get up 4.00 am, pack up the bedding, prepare morning tea, sweep the house and the courtyard clean, process milk into yoghurt, buttermilk and ghee, fetch fuel and water, clean dishes, so on. In all this amounts to come 12-16 hours of work a day.

2.2. Why some women still be discriminated against

Demand equality showed that all women are worthy of a good life with the convenience to be educated, to work, to participate in all conditions of normal life. Yet in many country in the world, women live within the discrimination against that make them not have access to vital services and their inherent rights.

Peasant women are the most impact by the economic terrain because they do not have the financial means to learn…As far as women are not noticed everything has changed in the last 30 years. They do not have a hospital, a health post. They do not have light, water, farming tools, none of that. They still do everything by hand, with oxen pull ploughs. One of the most important factor to hinder them is lack of education , they can not make any progress (Julia Cleves, 1994, p.14). Furthermore, Frances Wright, a British-born radicals show that the key to women’s inferior position, she insisted, was their ignorance and undeveloped intellects; the only remedy was an education equal to men’s. She rested women’s right to education squarely on the identical humanity of men and women.

Reliyadi (2006) noted that why has the struggle for gender equality become a big issue nowadays? The answer seems obvious. Socially, their equal rights are not guaranteed in roles in society, jobs and many settings. Women here are being discriminated against in virtually all aspects of life. In education, for example, while enrollment has increased for both sexes, the number of girls going to school is still far below the number of boys. According to the 2003 National Census, the number of boys is going on to higher education than girls. Almost women cannot accomplish work in the formal factor, that part of the economy with salary, retirement account, lawful conditions of work and an organised labour force. Responsibility for their children and for supplying food for the family forces millions of Southern women into just about any kind of work for cash. Women have consistently been paid less and promoted less often than men, and they have often been treated in a more demeaning and less professional manner than their male counter-parts. Despite having made significance gains toward workplace equality over the last few decades, progress has recently been slowed or stalled. Although it’s been over 40 years since the idea of female empowerment first inspired a generation of women to seek independent, professional careers, they are still facing the issue of sexism in the workplace.

2.3. What methods should be taken by the authorities to solve women issues

Referencing electronic sources needs further attention (Anup Shah, 2010). It isn’t easy to change tradition overnight. However, a small example of successes include :

Women work two-thirds of the world's working hours and produce half of the world's food. Yet, they earn only 10 percent of the world's income and own less than 1 percent of the world's property. Among the poorest and most at risk in almost every community, women and girls encounter an uphill struggle to realize their human rights to equality and dignity.

Humans Rights (n.d ) recommends that although many laws around the world outlaw gender discrimination, in fact many women still face enormous lack of equitability. The authorities should support efforts to fully implement laws and international commitments that deal with women's inequality and discrimination; and reconstruct effective women's networks and human rights organizations that attack to anticipate and remedy reasons which cause of gender inequality and discrimination.

A critical aspect of this work is to strengthen the leadership opportunities of marginalized women by equipping them with a voice to articulate the problems that affect their lives; craft solutions that help solve these problems; and contribute to practical, legal and policy changes that advance women's human rights and achieve a broader and more meaningful social justice. On the other hand, if men tend to involve in the modern cash sector of the economy while women tend to remain in the domestic and subsistence sector, any existing polarization between the gender roles of men and women will increase. The result can be to undermine the autonomy and self-sufficiency of women within the family, at least in terms of the resources available to them.

3. Conclusion

From all the findings above, it is clear that women’s rights over the world still to be not implemented seriously. Women’s lack of access to the inputs they need for education, training, and other means of growth and change, is profoundly linked to their gender role and the cultural association of women with the `inside’ or the home. By contrast, men belong to the `outside’ where livelihoods are eared and political and economic power is exercised. However, there are some reason to believe discrimination against will be remoted in the future thank to authorities’s determination and the adoption of many pratical measures. Then, hopefully, all women in the world are entitled to their rights and received respect from the opposite sex.
