Compare And Contrast The Three Models Of Decision Making As Defined By Allison And Zelikow (Rational Policy Model, Organisational Process Model, And Bureaucratic Politics Model).

OF THE ESSAY

The foreign policy of any country plays an important role in shaping the history of the world. It is the driving force in the determination of relationships of the countries. Foreign policy is the analysis of the procedures, reasons and effects of the decision making process related to the international relations and politics. These decisions carried out by the people or group of people having power in the governments. Graham T. Allison along with Philip Zelikow presented the three models of foreign policy making. These models (rational policy, organizational process and bureaucratic politics models) provide and in-depth knowledge of the decision making process related to the foreign policy. The rational policy model provides the idea that government is the key player and takes major decisions related to the foreign policy. According to the organizational process model, government works in collaboration with various organizations keeping in view the standard operating procedures and make decisions. Bureaucratic politics model, there are power players who influence the governments in the decision making process of foreign policy (Breuning, 2016).

In this essay, an in-depth analysis of these three models will be presented. The differences and comparison of models will be presented along with the implication of each model in the process of foreign policy making. The strengths and weaknesses of each model are another area of discussion in this essay. Countries often have foreign policies which lead towards the path of peace and prosperity for the human beings and they often made decisions and choices which put world at the brink of the wars. History is full of such events where a single decision saved the world from the crisis and the same thing happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis (Bernstein, 2000). Last but not the least, this essay will discuss all the three models in the light of Cuban Missile Crisis and how these models affected the decision making of John F. Kennedy related to the Cuba blockade.
