3.1 Definition of stress

“Stress, it is argues, can only be sensibly defined as a perceptual phenomenon arising from a comparison between the demand on the person and his or her ability to cope. An imbalance in the mechanism, when coping is important, gives rise to the experience of stress, and to the stress response.”

The definition of stress by Cox highlights stress as being an imbalance between demand and personal ability to cope.

3.2 Causes of work place stress

All individuals are affected differently by work and the demand placed on them, however there are several factors that can cause unnecessary pressure in the work place causing extra stress.

The work environment - staff that are exploded to poor work environments such as cramped work stations, inadequate facilities or poor ventilation or no air conditioning can have stress build up over time due to their surroundings.

Unsocial or long working hours - people working unsocial hours in random shift patters or constant night shifts somet somet somet

Economic recession - companies being affected by the economic climate may have to reassess job positions and departments, the fear of job loss can be a high stress factor.

Training and induction - it is common for new members of staff to experience more stress than normal, this can be eased by proper induction and training, individuals who do not understand their role or work will quickly become stressed when they cannot produce work or make deadlines.

Discrimination and harassment - working in an environment where an individual is subjected to discrimination or harassment can cause severe stress and tension within any business.

3.3 Solutions to stress in the work place and prevention

Some stress in the work place is unavoidable however there are always ways to manage stress and reduce its impact on business. Both companies and individuals can take action to help prevent unnecessary stress in the work place.

Company efforts can be having clearly defined work roles and responsibilities will help individuals feel comfortable in their jobs, promotion of social events, have a strict code for deal with any discrimination among staff, workload should be monitored to ensure workers have the ability and recourses to cope, communication between all departments, management and staff should be optimal with regal appraisals and feedback both upwards and downwards between management and staff.

Individuals who are affected by work related stress can take some control in making it better, positive thinking can often prevent stress when presented with a problem. Changes to lifestyle and diet can also make the working environment less stressful, drinking less caffeinated and sugary drinks while adopting a healthy diet will help.
