A Neighbourhood watch  (a community based 'watch your neighbour'  organisation to keep the neighbourhood safe) committee in the Tuggeranong valley  (ACT) has grown to the stage where printing newsletters, announcing meetings via hard copy pamphlets is becoming too expensive and time consuming.  They would also like to display current neighbourhood news about break ins, criminals identified and caught, safety tips about securing your flat or house and police news.  

Vision

A website that displays news and information about the current neighbourhood status, criminals identified and caught, safety tips about securing your flat and police news.

Mission

The primary purpose of our mission is to analyse customer value and design a website that provides news and information.

Our mission will provide the answers to the following:

What do our customers want?

Who are the primary customers in our mission?

What benefits do we bring to our customers through this mission?

The order of information

The order of information is very essential to the reader. As readers have expectations of what information should show up on the homepage. The first information should be the category list to give the customer or viewer a choice of what information they want to see. This is a very effective method as readers will read information in sequence from the beginning. It is also a necessary to display the most important information in the first page.

Other aspects of the design include a link to a pdf document of the current content on the page such as the news, so that when printing out the news, only news will be printed and not unnecessary things like the navigation links which is not appropriate and necessary in a printed page.

Maximize readability

To make text readability easier, break your text into smaller sections.

The use of subheadings will be more appropriate in cases where you are to divide each section of text into paragraphs.

Divide large text into paragraphs.

Use bold texts or different font size to show the important topics.

Browser compatibility

The website must be shown correctly in all browsers. It is best to create a table and document which browser it is best compatible with. Test the webpage to see if it displays properly on Internet explorer 6, internet explorer 7, internet explorer 8, Mozilla firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Opera and Camino.

Information gathering

Our customers will use information from their website for many reasons. One of the key reasons would be to widen their knowledge, save their effort and time, security, awareness, to develop skills and to be entertained.

Information that we need to put on the website should be the right kind and quality from a wide range of sources online. Only popular and latest news should be broadcasted on the website. The website should also have a good title to introduce the customers that this is a neighbourhood watch website, for example "Watch your neighbour".

One of the first information to put on the website is the weather information. Other information that the website must have is a discussion forum where the people of the neighbourhood can ask questions and post news about their sales if they have any. If more information is required then it would be necessary to conduct a survey.

They should also have Facebook and twitter links integration.

The role of the researchers is to research, identify and gather information about news, criminals identified and caught, break ins, safety tips and security about flat and rent to give to the news agency. Other roles may include website analysis to recommend to the website developer on how to develop the website. Researchers are internal stakeholders because they interact directly with the website by giving the news information to the developers of the website.

Staff of the website

The role of the staff of the website is to analyse the information gathered from news agencies and to classify the information into relevant sections for the readers to read. They are also known as the web developers and their concern is to build the website and fill it with contents. Staff or the developer of the website are internal stakeholders because they are the ones who develop the webpage.

News agency

Provided the information given by various sources, the news agency sends only relevant and most viewed news feeds and information to the web developers who then use this to put into their website. News agency is an internal stakeholder because they interact directly with the website.

Police force

The role of the police force is to ensure a peaceful neighbourhood. Their contribution to the website is that they provide criminal information to the news agencies who then update our website by giving those information to the developers who then develop the website. Their concern would be "Is the neighbourhood safe of all crimes?". Police force are external stakeholders because they don’t interact directly with the website.

Visitors

Visitors of the website are primarily known as the external stakeholders. Their concern would be how can they be more safe. They contribute nothing to the website but their feedbacks are valued to improve the design of the website. They only view the website.

Conclusion

The website must be compatible with phones and small screens. The webpage must also be printable so that anyone who wishes to print out the news will be able to do so without having the screenshot the website. And always anticipate designs for smaller screens and not just for large screens. The website must also be very attractive. If a website is not attractive the viewers of the website will not view the website at all. Therefore the website must be easy to read, understand and eye friendly.
