Data recovery is significant skill in Information Security. Many people got experiences of data lost from their life such as forgot a password, deleted an important file, and be damaged portable electronic devices.

The reasons of above situation, there are various kinds of data recovery tools available as a freeware or shareware on the internet. This document will present product details and evaluations about each of five data recovery software.

Scope of report

As long as analyzing and investigating these five tools, it is important to consider their suitability, accuracy, efficiency and stability for device, system and recovered data. This document will cover the short brief of software, features of tool, screen shots of application structure

Data collection methods

In this report, methods of data collection and analysis will be according to the criteria outlined for laboratory Exercise 01 as set out in Curtin University School of information systems.

Create a number of files by Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and prepare one sample video and sample picture. And then write any contents of each file. Use the password protection for each Microsoft office file. Give them any name and right extension such as aaa.doc, aaa.xls, and aaa.ppt. After completing created files, delete the files and using an appropriate tool to recover them.

Presentation of Tools

Recuva

Recuva is a Graphic User Interface (GUI) based tool which means the software is easy to use in user perspective, even though user might not have any knowledge for it. Therefore, it just requires user’s reading skill for English. When Recuva is run, the tool can resurrect lost files using either the deleted data recovery wizard or a manual mode. The wizard is convenient way when user is sure about data is lost or missing but not guarantees where it went or how to get it back. There are three types of light system which are green, yellow, and red to specify how probable the recovery of user files will be, and when available, it can provide previews image files available for recovery.

WinHex is complex software for beginner because it does not provide simple user interface. It looks like just windows explorer and uses hexadecimal editor. In addition, main purpose of this tool is not recovering deleted or lost files. Therefore, it is more complicate for utilization. However, the tool is helpful in various range of computer such as forensics, data recovery, low-level data processing, and IT security.
