We are exploring how digital technologies can help communities transform the way they manage, use and conserve natural resources. Natural Language Generation & Affective Communication Much of our work on interfaces to people is centred around the use of natural language generation (NLG) to produce natural and acceptable communication. This includes investigating the intelligent use of language to affect human behaviour. For example, by making tactful suggestions about what needs to be done in a stressful and demanding situation, or by seeking to motivate users to submit data by providing them with interesting feedback on their observations. We are also pursuing research on more traditional topics within NLG, including issues to do with the presentation of geo- and time-related data and the construction of coherent narratives. Reasoning, Coordination & Collaboration Much economic and social activity involves collaboration and coordination among individuals or groups. In the rural Digital Economy, remoteness and dynamic but disparate populations drive the need for virtual communities to be supported and high service delivery costs and economic specialisation drive the need for technologies to support collaboration to enable costs to be shared and services combined. Furthermore, limited and comparatively higher-cost digital access drives the need for users to delegate such tasks to (semi-) autonomous software systems on the network. Our research focuses on trusted computational solutions to support collaboration and coordination among people and services. Such systems must respect the information security and privacy of individuals, businesses and other stakeholders at the same time as promoting effective teams. Intelligent Information Infrastructures In recent years there has been much talk about a future Web driven by semantic and agent technologies. An intelligent infrastructure is envisioned which enables data, information, and knowledge to be exposed, shared, connected and consumed by users and services. Linked Data is often cited as a key enabler of this infrastructure; the term refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web. Key technologies that support Linked Data are URIs (a generic means to identify entities or concepts in the world), HTTP (a universal mechanism for retrieving resources, or descriptions of resources), and RDF (a graph-based data model to structure and link data). While Linked Data can play an important role in such systems, by providing a mechanism to support data integration and a means to support reasoning and annotation, on its own it is not sufficient to build effective applications, as other important elements are necessary: Mechanisms must be in place to represent and reason about the provenance of data created or modified within such an infrastructure; Workflow capabilities are needed in order to manage the blending of the user and machine aspects of an application; Means to represent quality dimensions and requirements are needed in order to reason about and annotate data; Support for reasoning about trust and reputation is needed to facilitate confidence in system actions; Means to represent and reason about user (or other agent) policies are needed in order to ensure that actions within the system comply with appropriate norms. We are exploring these issues within a range of user application contexts in order to better understand the shape of future intelligent information infrastructures. Internet Engineering We are investigating how satellite access can provide broadband access for individuals and communities where cost-effective fast broadband services are not available (SIRA). Research combines new satellite access technologies, such as Ka-band transmission, adaptive coding and modulation to increase access speed, coupled with novel methods to enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) for voice, data and video. Using TSB funding, we are part of a consortium that has built a UK testbed (DART) to support advanced network service enablers (multicast, dynamic QoS, content pre-placement and micro-billing). This testbed is now open for experimenters to explore new applications and business models. Experiments include techniques to enable high quality Internet video conference for rural healthcare, support for IP multicast transmission of local content across the UK and multicast content caching solutions for high quality IP-based TV to locations with limited broadband. Another activity (WiSE) is exploring wireless networking technologies for environmental video monitoring; this includes techniques for low-cost data upload (over point-to-point WiFi), background transfer of large data sets, occasional access to high-rate upload (e.g. in response to external stimulus), a need to work from battery (energy-conserving methods), scalability to a large installed base, and a need for resilience (multiple communication paths). We are building a testbed for rural communications technologies, to be located in the Cruickshank Botanical Gardens, St Machar Drive, Aberdeen. This is a technology platform to support the range of applications being explored in the dot.rural digital economy hub. The testbed is linked to the school of Engineering Internet Testbed, where it can draw upon experience and tools to support the communications activities. Our vision is that it will become an open platform for experimentation to support work on future internet, rural sensing, and all things relating to a rural "Internet of Things".
