1.0 Introduction of Computer Technology

Nowadays, Computers has penetrated every facet of our life. From leisure to social to conducting business, computers are increasingly more indispensable. In order to satisfy the increasing demands of savvier computer users, a wide variety of computers are developed to meet this need. Some examples of computers will be the mainframe, supercomputers, microcomputers, personal computers and others. In this report we will discuss more on the personal computers which is the most common computer. Computers technology is evolving every single day in order to satisfy the high demands of computers user. For example the personal computer has been evolving from the desktop computers to laptops, netbook, tablets and smart phones.

2.0 History of Computers

The great creation of computer technology begins with Charles Babbage, who developed the Difference Engine, which is considered being the first automatic computing system that was capable to compute several sets of numbers with equations. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete a totally functional machine because he has insufficient funds. The London Science Museum has completed the Difference Engine 2 at the bicentennial year of Babbage's birth. In year 2000, the printing technology had been added to the Engine as well.

2.1 History of PC

Released date Name of PC Inventor Description

1837 Difference Engine

Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage creates the difference engine in 1837 that is considered as the first computer system of the early.

1964 Programma 101

Pier Giorgio

Perotto Pier Giorgio Perotto, an Italian engineer has invented the first desktop computer named programma 101 which was introduced in 1965 at a world fair in New York.

1965-1969 Soviet

MIR Series

Victor Glushkov

Victor designed the computer for engineering and scientific applications usage. It stores some advanced level programme language where a light pen is included to make changes on the monitor.

1973 Xerox Alto

HP

Xerox Alto, invented by HP which was a fully programmable computer that is able to fit on top of a table with a keyboard, monitor and printer.

1976 Apple 1

Steve Wozniak

The Apple 1 was inspired from the models of the IBM and then it was invented to be better than the IBM computers and was released in 1976.

1981 Osborne 1

Osborne

Computer Company

In 1981 the Osborne Computer Company invented the first portable computer named Osborne 1. It was powered by an Alternating Current (AC) connection including some backup battery. It had two 5 " floppy drives which is mounted on the sides of the display including a port which will be connected to a modem to the internet. The display was only 12-25 cm wide means that only limited number of characters per line. It is foldable and portable.

1986 TRS-80 Model 200

RadioShack

The TRS-80 Model 200 was introduced in 1986 that was more compact, which had a much bigger screen and a longer battery life, with included operating software.

1988 SLT/286

Compaq

Unlike the other laptop, the SLT/286 comes with an enhanced coloured display and had a smaller 1.44 floppy drive and 286 processor.

Many years later, there is a huge demand for a portable computer which people could use it anywhere and anytime. The laptops that were introduced in the early years were very basic and lack of modernised requirements. Most of them were very bulky, built-in with very small displays screens, without hard drives and everything. The table shows the timeline of the history of Personal Computer and Laptops over the years. As we can see, the technology changes from PC to laptops gradually changes. This is because more people are focusing on mobility, energy saving and weight.

3.0 Defining Laptop

We define a laptop by its features such as prices, mobility, weight, energy consumption, hardware and software components.

Some main components that are commonly used to define a laptop are:

 Hard Drive

 GPU (graphic processing unit/Graphic card)

 Processor

 Operating System

 Battery

 RAM

These components are being considerate for different performance by the user.

3.1 Hard Drive

The hard disk drive (HDD) is the primary storage on the laptop. Unlike RAM, HDD keeps data while power is running in low profile, Saved remains in the HDD until you remove it manually. HDD space was limited during the early days that users went to great lengths to conserve some space. Modern HDDs are so capacious and affordable that most people now regard disk space as free. The disadvantage is that the modern HDDs can be troublesome to install and configure.

3.2 Processor

The processor in the laptop motherboard provides the technology to determine the memory and other components the computer can access. Of course, the more number of processors, the performance of the laptop will be faster and smoother. The performance of the processor depends on the end users choice. Basic processor like Intel Core 2, Core i3 are for user that require basic uses like email, writing reports or any other office work. High performance or overclocking processors are for users who are into extreme graphical programs like Adobe After Effects (CS5) or game developing software that requires faster speed processing. Example of such processor is Intel Core i7 that has 8 processors where the program will move much faster as the data is being spread out among the processors. AMD processor is a much economical priced unit. However the performance as compared to Intel processors, are not on the same level like latest AMD FX-8 is only comparable to the Intel Core i5.

3.2.1 The Comparison of Intel and AMD processors

The following chart shows the differences between Intel and AMD core.

3.3 GPU

The graphical processing unit is a circuit board that is connected to the laptops motherboard where it manipulates and enhances the image frame buffer rate. The higher bit rate of the GPU, the better and smoother, the graphical performance is. GPU also comes in various memory sizes from 1 Gigabyte to 4 Gigabyte. This is mostly recommended to gamers that wanted to enjoy their games on the go.

3.4 Operating System

A laptop with an out-dated operating system will not be useful. So it is best to have a laptop with an updated operating system. Some common operating systems are Windows 7 and Windows XP. However, there is an operating system, Windows 8 which was recently released and brought a lot of inconvenience to the public as it is not compatible to some software. Windows 8 has a touch screen compatibility for mobile devices and new model laptop which has touch screen functions.

3.5 Battery

The battery component of a laptop varies on the length of time the user is working on his laptop. If the user works longer hours it will be better to have a battery with longer life so there is no need to find power plug for charging. That is why consumer purchases laptop with more cells which is able to last for about 4-5 hours.

3.6 RAM

You need to have more RAM than having to reach just the minimum requirements. This is because the extra RAM memory will allow the programs to run smoother preventing the computer to lag. The minimum requirement of RAM will be 2GB, for optimal performance will be about 4GB and the best performance will be 32GB.

3.7 Brand Loyalty

Brand loyalty means if the customers like the brand due to its performance and service, they will definitely buy more of their products to support the manufacturer. If that typical brand is constantly being supported throughout the years, their stock rates in the market will definitely be high.

These are the 3 Brands that we are going to compare their brand loyalty:

Acer Inc. is a company from Taiwan. It is a multinational hardware and electronics corporation which makes up the fourth largest PC manufacturer of the world.

ASUS Computer Inc. is also a company from Taiwan, which is multinational as well. They sold products under its own brand but also produce components for other manufacturers, including Apple, Dell and HP. Asus became the world's fifth-largest PC manufacturer and vendor by sales in 2011.

Unlike Asus and Acer, Lenovo Group Limited is a multinational computer hardware and electronics company which is headquartered in Taiwan. Lenovo has become the world's second-largest PC manufacturer since 2011 market share. Lenovo also took over IBM's personal computer business in 2005 to expand its market in america.

Acer

Lenovo

Asus

From the above stock rates, we assume that Asus is the most popular and reliable brand among the chosen brands.

4.0 Laptops classification

Laptops today are being classified into categories of performance and portability.

For example, people who prefer a much higher performance in games, intensive graphical usage programs would want laptops like Alienware as they have good graphical processing unit which provides smooth and no lagging performance. The battery life is definitely important as more power is needed to run a lot of programs.

Another category will be the portability type where the basic function of scripting is required. These laptops are mostly suitable for working classes as they want more on carry-and-go. This will make meeting up with clients for business discussions or sending emails easier. Examples of such laptops will be like Apple MacBook and Netbooks.
