Pioneer Int. is the export company, which is getting into a joint venture with cliffs natural resources for exporting chromite to Germany.

The project is about creating an international business plan to export chromite to Germany by August 2013.

The objective of creating this project plan is to help Pioneer Int. with necessary licenses, finances, and marketing to export chromite to Germany.

Introduction

This project is being done as a requirement for all the postgraduate international business students. The project includes the preparation of international business plan which has the marketing research, staffing research, the logistics, preparation of financial documents and supplier research. The international business plan is done on a span of 4 months.

Objective:

To prepare an international business plan in 4 months, to export chromite/ferrochrome to Germany by using the primary and secondary sources.

Project Scope

The purpose of this project is to prepare an international business plan on exporting chromite to Germany from the Northern Ontario mine of Ring of Fire which is being explored and exploited by the US based company Cliffs Natural Resources.

Gather relevant information about the chromite mine which was recently discovered in the northern part of Ontario. The information includes quality of the chromite, the size of the mine, transportation facilities and facilities for the employees.

Gather primary and secondary information on Germany through databases, news articles and the embassies available in Canada.

Preparation of marketing plan and presenting it to the sponsors.

Analyzing the budget for the project and scheduling the activities.

Analyzing the risk for the foreign business environment.

Analyzing the supply chain between Canada and Germany for export of minerals.

Preparing an international business plan based on the research findings and presenting.

Although each team member is assigned to research a particular topic, all other team members should be informed and or consulted on each assignment. The team leader is also accountable for all project activities assigned to team members while they are responsible for their tasks.

During project team meeting, the information of every team member is analysed and discussed so that every team member has the knowledge on all the aspects of the business environment.

Information Gathering and Research Methods

The preparation of the international business plan can be done using both the primary and secondary sources. The primary sources are:

Information interview with the company officials.

Information interview with German Consulate official.

The secondary sources:

Data bases on countries.

Company websites.

Journals.

News articles.

Cost Management:

The Cost Management Plan clearly defines how the costs on a project will be managed throughout the project’s lifecycle and Project Manager will be responsible for the cost management throughout the duration of the Project.

Cost Management Approach.

Cost Performance index will build to Track cost.

Cost will be rounded at the nearest cost of the dollar.

Cost variances are shown in the Schedule performance indexes and CPI.

Measuring Project Costs.

Performance of the project will be assessed using the Earned Value Management.

If the Schedule Performance Index or Cost Performance Index has a variance of between 0.1 and 0.2 the Project Manager must report the reason for the exception. If the SPI or CPI has a variance of greater than 0.2 the Project Manager must report the reason for the exception and provide management a detailed corrective plan to bring the projects performance back to acceptable levels.

Cost Variance Response Process

The Control Thresholds for this project is a CPI or SPI of less than 0.8 or greater than 1.2. Once reach Cost Variance corrective Action Plan is required.

Project manager has to provide a plan with corrective action to the sponsors with in the 3 business days

Plan will details all the necessary measurement to bring the project back in the budget.

Cost Change Control Process

The cost change control process will follow the established project change request process. Approvals for project budget/cost changes must be approved by the project sponsor.

Upcoming Task

The major upcoming task the team has is the presentation of the project plan and getting approval from the sponsors.

Issues:

Unavailability of much information on the mine as it is in the exploratory phase.

Unavailability of the company in Toronto for information interview.

Marketing plan will be a challenge as the marketing and distribution is done just between the customer and the supplier in regards to the minerals.

Quality Criteria:

Pioneer will deliver the International Business Plan which includes the marketing plan, budgeting plan, plan for a logistics with a high quality as expected from the sponsors and related stakeholders. The quality of the business plan can be analysed using the materials which are recommended for the preparation of international business plan for the course of international business plan.

The business plan will be prepared with high standards under the guidance of materials of course IBS603 and IBS820.

All the information, data and documents handed in shall be written in the business plan and will consist of all citation and references in MLA format.

Communication Plan

The organization has communication both internally and externally. The members who are working for the completion of the international business plan are the internal stake holders and the communication is done internally and the other stake holders are in the external communication plan.

Internal:

The organization has an established intranet through which we are communicating with the members of the organization. The members of the organization are also in contact through mails, phones and meetings.

External:

The organization has stake holders for this project and the stake holders are communicated mostly through mails and through calls. The important discussion are made through the meeting and discussions face to face.

Project Procurement Plan:

In the preparation of International Business plan, Pioneer Int. requires mainly the materials for the research on Germany and Canada, and the company which is the supplier for our company. The materials required for this particular project are procured through different databases available. The data will be analyzed by the team manager along with the team members and the decision will be made on which material is to be procured.
