Distinguish Between Input And Outputs Devices

Computer systems include the computer along with any software and peripheral devices that are necessary to make it functional. A peripheral is a device that is connected to a host computer, but not part of it. It expands the host's capabilities but does not form part of the core computer architecture. It is often, but not always, partially or completely dependent on the host. There are three different types of peripherals:

Input, which provide input to the computer from the user (mice, keyboards, etc.)

Output, which provide output to the user from the computer (monitors, printers, etc.)

Storage, which store data (hard drives, flash drives, etc.)

To understand the difference between an input and output device, we must understand the difference between input and output. Any information or data that's entered or sent to the computer to be processed is considered input, and anything that is displayed from the computer is output. Therefore, an input device such as a computer keyboard is capable of having information sent to the computer, whereas an output device such as a computer printer can print information from the computer.

Most computer systems include a keyboard and pointing device, such as a mouse, for basic data input. Touch-sensitive screens offer an additional input option. Other input devices, such as scanners, digital cameras, and graphics tablets, are handy for working with graphical input. Microphones and electronic instruments provide input capabilities for sound and music.

A computer keyboard is one of the primary input devices for a computer system. Many styles of keyboards exist, but a few common components of keyboards include a numeric keypad, for data entry, an alpha-numeric keyboard, for day-to-day typing, and function keys, for accessing system functions and program shortcuts. Keyboards may also contain special knobs or buttons at the top for opening Internet browsers and other applications and controlling volume and media playback.

Composite devices use two or more methods of inputting information to a computer system. Computer mouse devices contain buttons for clicking and scrolling as well as tracking movement. Gaming peripherals, such as gamepads and joysticks, are composite devices as well. These devices use several buttons, switches and controls for moving and manipulating game objects, such as airplanes in flight simulations and automobiles in racing games.

Output devices can take many forms, but most computer systems include a monitor, a printer or plotter for hard copy, that is, output printed on paper, and loudspeakers for reproducing sound.

Printers nowadays are typically inkjet printers or laser printers. Computer loudspeakers are also analog output devices. A computer program, known as a coder/decoder, or codec, converts sound from a digital format, such as MPEG Audio Layer-3 (MP3), into a series of electronic pulses that are sent to the loudspeaker.
