LAN Stands for Local Area Network. LAN is usually used for a variety of things such as school networks, work offices, gaming and much more.

Gaming: LAN is used in gaming for multiple reasons but it is usually used to link multiple consoles so people can have a more than 4 person in-game party so you don't have to go online to play with more than four friends.

Work & schools: LAN is used in work offices and schools to link all of the computers in the school/workplace to a single server so they can be monitored by one computer and can also transfer files to other computers connected to the servers so they don't have to email it through the internet.

Peer to peer network (P2P): Peer to Peer network is a network where a computer can act a client or server for other computer in the network, allowing shared access to different resources like files. Each network type needs all computers to be running the same or similar programme to connect to each other and access each others files , for example, audio and video data.

Client/server network:The client/server model assigns one of two roles to the computers in a network either a client or a server. A server is a computer system that selectively shares its resources. A client is a computer or computer program that makes contact with a server in order to make use of a resource.

Difference between the two: In the client/server model, the server is a centralized system. The more simultaneous clients a server has, the more resources it needs. In a peer-to-peer network, two or more computers pool their resources and communicate in a decentralized system. Peers are coequal nodes in a non-hierarchical network. Collectively, lesser-powered computers can share the load and provide redundancy.
