Abstract: Digital evidence can be define as the any information that has probative value which is either stored or transmitted in a binary form. The binary term then has been changed from the word “binary” to digital and carry the term Digital evidence. Example of the digital evidence is such as the computer evidence, digital audio, digital video, mobile phones, and digital fax machines. While the Mobile devices are the hand-held computing devices which are small and typically have the display screen. The Mobile Devices is an easy to carry device that usually equipped with operating system. The operating system facilitate the user in running any application software.

Introduction

Mobile Devices seen as an important technology device nowadays. In daily life, the Mobile Devices help people to communicate either for long distance communication or just nearby. In this era, Mobile Devices can be more than a communicating tool. Because of that, the mobile devices also can be easily used in providing evidence which is known as the Digital evidence. How it can be used as the Digital evidence? It happen when the mobile devices has been used in facilitating criminal activity or has been indirectly involved in crime scene. This hand-held devices maybe contained personal information including call history, text messages, e-mails, digital photographs, videos, calendar items, memos, address books, passwords, and credit card numbers.

According to Scientific Working Group for Digital Evidence (SWGDE) (July 1998), the Digital evidence can be defined as the any information which have the probative value which is either stored or transmitted in a binary form. Example of the Digital evidence is address books and contact lists; audio files and voice recordings, email messages and many more. While the Mobile devices can be defined as the hand-held computing devices which are small and typically have the display screen. As we know, this device can be used to communicate, exchange photographs, connect to social networks, blog, take notes, record and consume video and audio, sketch, access the Internet, and much more. Because these devices are easy to carry, it can be used to determine a person’s whereabouts at a particular time. This rapid development of mobile computing and communication technology creates opportunities for criminals and investigators alike.

The higher data transmission rates are allowing individuals to transfer more data such as the digital video. The computing power in these devices enables people to use them in much the same way as we used laptop systems over the past decade Take as an example, the latest issue regarding the Mobile Devices is when a student from SMK Tun Hussein Onn, Pulau Pinang, act by uploading bullying video on Youtube that has been recorded by them. Three student from that school are accused on bullying their class monitor based on the video that has been uploaded. The increasing computational power of mobile devices has afforded even greater uses, and with that, greater potential for misuse for this device

Methodology

In completing this term paper, primary and secondary literatures are used to enable in depth understanding of digital evidence on Mobile devices. One of the article that has been used to gain more information about the Digital evidence on Mobile devices is Digital Evidence on Mobile Devices by Eoghan Casey and Benjamin Turnbull. This article is basically illustrates on how the mobile devices can be useful as sources of digital evidence, describes the basic operation of mobile devices, and presents tools and techniques for acquiring and examining digital evidence on these devices. According to the author, Mobile devices also facing many problem in providing evidence on the forensic perspective. The growing number and variety of mobile devices makes it difficult to develop a single process or tool to address all eventualities. In addition to a growing variety of smart phones and platforms including Android systems, Blackberry, Apple iPhone, and Windows Mobile, there are a massive number of low-end phones using legacy OS systems.

The second method in gaining the information that relate to the digital evidence is from video that has been uploaded in Youtube. The video showed three students bullying their class monitor. The video has been uploaded by their friend into Youtube. From the activity of uploading the video itself, it showed that the Mobile device are misuse by the unresponsible person that used the technology to spread a video that absolutely not good.

The third method is by attending seminar. The seminar is entitled as Seminar on Cyberthreat. The speaker is a senior analyst from the Cybersecurity Malaysia. He basically explained on how cell phoned or smart phones can be easily hack by other people. All information in our smart phones can be easily hack by other using specific device in collecting all information that contain on our smart phone. Some mobile devices are optimized for data acquisition such as credit card scanning and many more. According to van der Knijff, (2009); Wilson, (2006), This flexibility has ramifications beyond the manufacturer’s intentions, and mobile devices have been used to steal credit cards and trigger bombs.

Definitions and concepts of Digital evidence on Mobile device.

According to Rizwan Ahmed (2013), the digital evidence is a series of binary digit

numbers on transmission, or stored information files on the electronic device. Moreover, the digital evidence file formats includes audio, video, images, digital and many more. The digital evidence is not virtual exist, but there are some other features to look for, the digital evidence can be copied with unlimited differences, can be modified easily, hard to be identified the original resource, can be integrated data verification, and cannot be understood directly without technical process.

With the increased emphasis on social security issue, crime issue is considerable when it comes to the utilization of smart phone technologies, digital forensics provide the technical skills to collect evidences for the court to review and judge cases. Digital equipment has changed daily, people are more likely to use some common digital devices such as computers, Internet, digital cameras, hardware, storage devices, and mobile devices itself. Currently, digital forensics has widely used in the areas of network forensics, mobile forensics, computer forensics, and memory forensics, and many more.

According to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) the definition of mobile phone forensics process is preservation, acquisition, examination and analysis, and then reporting. Google’s Android is an open source smart phone operating system, which is based on Linux. The data can be considered as important from forensics perspective on Android devices is such as the Subscriber and equipment identifiers, Date/time of calls movements, Phonebook, Appointment Calendar, Dialed, incoming and missed call log, Electronic mail Photos, Audio and video records, Multi-media messages, Instant messages, Electronic Documents, and Location information.

While according to Benjamin Turnbull, the Mobile devices are simple computers with a CPU, memory, batteries, input interfaces such as a keypad or mouthpiece, and output interfaces such as a display screen.
