Abstract—This paper is aimed to present an idea of detecting explosives using mobile and satellite communication and thus paving a way for in depth research on formulating this idea into practice.

Introduction

As we moved into the nineteenth century i.e. a century which has seen advancement in technology in various fields, we have come across with both pros and cons of this advancement in drastic ways. This advancement has brought entire world very close when we talk in terms of electronic communication and somewhere it has snatched the close ones in very terrible ways. The bomb explosions are the most terrific scenes seen by almost all countries whether powerful and developed country like USA or some under developing country like Srilanka. There is no part of the today’s world where the threat of bomb explosion is nil, hence this paper will focus on the possible solutions of controlling such life killing explosions. With these explosions, it is not only the life of people which is at risk and most of the times at stake but it is the peace and economic growth of a nation also which gets a mind shed setback.

ExISTING SOLUTIONS

There are various government and non-government organizations in some countries who have developed sensors which can detect different chemicals used in various explosive devices e.g. FLIR with its offices worldwide is mainly occupied in developing various sensors and devices for detection of different chemicals used in explosive devices. However, all these detections are based upon the pre understanding of the data fed in the device and matching of that data with the data existing in the surrounding limited area if any. None of these devices is capable of working in automatic mode. By automatic mode in this context we mean that these devices are not capable of sensing these chemicals by their own decision or initiation. We need to activate them first and place them near the target. Then they produce some beep or sound as soon as the chemical present in some explosive device comes in their contact. Hence they are used

at some most predictive locations like at airports, railway stations, VIP offices , VIP places etc. but they are not used at crowdie places and some ordinary places where the chances of getting great casualties and economic loss due to sabotaging of all the surroundings at the site of explosion, are more.

Figure 2 shows FIDO On-Board Robot assembled explosive matters detection system from FLIR but again it works only when instructed to do so and it is also generally used at those locations where the explosive device is predicted after getting any information a.nd for those areas which remain untraceable due to lack of information, this device is not at all used.

Apart from the mentioned devices from FLIR, there are several more explosive detection devices from FLIR and from some other companies but all of them need a high power to start the operation of detection and they also need external initiation after getting the instruction from the user. The user himself starts these devices if he gets any information about the presence of any explosive device at any location which is very dangerous when there is no pre-information about the life killing explosions like in serial blasts that had left India in the pool of blood during the year 2010 when there were serial blasts in different parts of this country. Such incidents have happened in almost all parts of world and there the devices mentioned above could not save the life of millions of flaura and fauna.

The idea that we are proposing in this paper is to make use of present technologies of satellite communication and mobile communication for detection of chemicals used in the explosive devices well before the time of their explosion which will reduce the rate of losses due to such life killing and peace killing explosions to a remarkable level.

As we know that now-a-days these two technologies have reached in every corner of this world and has become a need for most common man existing on this earth e.g. a mobile set is owned by almost all classes of people. Since it has become the necessity of modern world, hence it exists in every corner of the world. It has also been used as triggering device for triggering bombs in various incidents but here in this paper we are going to show how it can be used as life saver instead of life killer.

These two technologies are being used so rapidly and so frequently that there is not even a single second when these technologies are not being used. Hence using these technologies will be beneficial in getting into action at a more quicker rates and saving the life and economy of any nation during the incidents of any explosion.

Proposed Model Layout

The model for proposed solution has been shown in Fig. 3. In this model it has been shown how the suggested model can work. As we know the explosive material is generally placed by the anti-nation elements in those places where huge damage can be done to the nation by killing innocent people, by destroying its economy, by shattering its peace and thus leaving it in terrible and most painful condition.

In the proposed model, first of all we need to work on the chemical sensors in such a way that they can be embedded on the mobile itself. For this, we may work upon the existing chemical sensors as offered by several good companies like FLIR etc. The recent advancement in VLSI technology can pave favorable way towards the accomplishment of this step where the size of chip is reducing to an appreciable size, sufficient enough to fulfill our demand.

Once, we are able to have good chemical sensors on mobile chip, our model will get life to work because rest all steps are bound to work all together and have our model in more activated state.

The mobile communication technology in coordination with satellite communication technology will be helpful in detection of chemicals present in the explosive materials and signaling the legal authorities for its disposal in very quick time as shown in Fig. 1

In Fig. 1 as can be seen if any explosive material is present at any place it will be detected by the chemical sensor present in the mobile device. As we know the details about any mobile device lies in its associated location register in the MSC ( Mobile Switching Center), its traceability can be channeled directly via satellite link. The SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is the best information provider and it informs about the current location of the particular device. In order to put less burden on the satellites, we can have immediate satellite link for only those mobiles which detect any chemical present in the explosive material in its vicinty. This will reduce the need of higher bandwidth for this extra application of satellite communication.

As the chemical sensors present in the mobile device senses the chemical present in the explosive material, it gets directly linked to the satellite and gives the information of that particular mobile device mentioning its current location. As the signal going to satellite link will be electromagnetic, it will move at a speed of light ,thus ensuring that the entire process does not take much time.

As soon as the sattelite will receive this signal, it will immediately alert the concerned legal authorities which can be the bomb diffusing squads along with medical facility providing hospitals, fire briggades, NGOs etc. depending upon the gravity of expected density of public in that particular area. Again this data can be provided by the satellite using the GSM technology so as to have immediate response for the concerned situation. All this procedure can be done without disturbing the user of that particular mobile device because if user gets to know that there is some explosive in his vicinity, he may get panicked and if that area is a crowded area there are probabilities of having stampeding and that may trigger the explosion before its expected time of explosion. Hence it is mandatory to keep user unaware of this entire process.

Next, as the concerned authorities get the signal they can either rush themselves in that particular area or send some another team which is near to that place and get that particular place disbanded immediately. Soon after the bomb squads can take the charge of that place and get the bomb diffused immediately. This entire process will not take more than five minutes of time if the concenrned authorities are active enough and responsible enough in understanding the seriousness of the circumstances and getting into action immediately. Whenever any explosive material is being placed at some place by any anti-nation element, that person takes that much time buffer in which he can escape from that particular place and if this model comes into existance, any person even carrying the explosive material can be nabbed immediately before letting that person to place it somewhere.

From Figure 3, it is clear that the existing technologies in coordination with human support can cut down the rate of losses occuring due to random and abrupt explosions occuring at any place in this world as these technologies find their way in every corner of this world.

IV FUTURE SCOPE

This model paves way to tremendous research in the field of sensor building for detecting the chemicals present in the explosive devices e.g. sensors can be build up taking into consideration of few points mentioned in the following subsections:

Vapour pressure of chemicals

Molecular structure of chemicals

Electromagnetic interference structure of chemicals

Chemical bonding of atoms in chemicals etc.

All these points can lead to a sensor building which can be compatible with the modern technologies being used in mobile devices in following ways
