Ray Lewis

Everyone has gifts, everyone has passions, but only a select few can merge their gifts and passions. Ray Lewis has done such a thing. Ray Lewis, in some people’s minds, defines the middle linebacker position of football. The choice he had to make to dedicate his life to his gift and passion was significant. Ray Lewis was just the guy to do it.

On May 15, 1975, Ray’s sixteen year old mother had a baby boy. She named that boy Ray Anthony Lewis. At the time of Ray’s birth, Ray’s mom, Sunseria Jenkins, did not live with Ray’s father. In fact, by the time Ray was six, He and his siblings were shocked if they saw their father, Ray Jenkins. Ray had four siblings. He had three younger sisters and a younger brother. Ray and his family lacking a father had been obvious. Sunseria was a single mom. She did not have enough money to put her and her children in a good part of town. With the low income and the bad part of town, Ray attended terrible schools.

Ray Lewis entered Kathleen High School in Florida. He played football and wrestled. During Ray’s high school years, it was obvious Ray was an insane athlete. Ray’s dad held school wrestling records. Ray beat all of his father’s records. Ray was excited to beat his father’s records just because Ray got his father’s name out of the record books. Ray was spiteful of his father. Ray found satisfaction in beating him alone. Ray was a great wrestler, but it was obvious he was meant to play football. He dominated throughout high school and later got a scholarship to the University of Miami, Florida for football.

Ray arrived in Miami in 1993. As a freshman in college people usually do not start in the sport they are in. That was the case for Ray. Mid-way through the 1993 season the starting middle linebacker was injured. Ray’s opportunity came. Ray took the saying "seize the moment" to a whole new level. He came in and dominated. Ray started the rest of his career at Miami. It was obvious he would make it to the National Football League. Ray had only one thing going against him: his size. Coming into Miami at six foot one and only 240 pounds, he was too small. Ray needed to get at least fifteen pounds heavier to be successful. By the 1995 season, his junior year, he was still the same size. Ray entered the 1996 NFL draft.

Ray Lewis was taken twenty-sixth overall in the 1996 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens. Ray started his career with Ravens on September 1, 1996. The Ravens beat the Oakland Raiders. The win was great, but Ray, more importantly, shined. He proved himself not only a starter, but a leader. Ray had the potential to become what everyone knew he could become. He also took care of his size problem, gaining twenty pounds.

As time passed, Ray continued to grow, but still played at an amazing level. Ray became one of the most revered players in the National Football League. Ray and the Ravens made it to the Superbowl in 2000. The night of the game did not go as planned. Ray was at a club named Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia on January 31, 2000. Ray was with friends when a fight broke out. Ray went to his limo as his friends were fighting. Two people were killed. The police did an investigation. Ray lied to police and said he knew nothing. Ray was arrested for murder. Ray hired the best lawyers he could. He hired Ed Garland and Don Samuel. After investigation, Ray was proven innocent. Ray still did lie to law enforcement. In order to escape murder charges, Ray pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. He was charged with an obstruction of justice. Ray Lewis received one year of probation.

As most would guess, the events that Ray was involved in made a splash in the media. Ray Lewis was tore down and ridiculed. Ray said," I hear everything from ‘Murderer’… I hear everything from ‘You shouldn’t play football anymore’" (Lewis 8) Ray attempted to outplay the criticism. In some minds, he did. Although, the killing has never left him.

Ray continued on his career with flying colors. Ray only missed an average of two games a year. Middle linebacker is a tough position. Having only missed two games a year is extremely impressive. Then 2002 came, and Ray hurt his shoulder. He missed the majority of the season.

Ray was always very loyal to his mother. Since Ray left Miami as a junior, he never graduated. Ray promised his mom he would graduate. In 2004, Ray graduated from University of Maryland-University with a degree in Business Administration. He continued to be a successful business man. He created houses in poor parts of Baltimore.

Finally, Ray had been playing for seventeen years, in 2013, retired. The Ravens started strong. Then, Ray tore a triceps muscle. Ray missed a majority of the season. He recovered for the playoffs. He inspired his team. Ray announced his retirement already. His team wanted to win for him. Ray led the Ravens to the Superbowl. Ray retired after the win, inspiring many.

Ray changed his own life. Not only did he affect others, he turned himself around. He started off getting drunk, and getting into fights to become a devout Christian. Ray, after every win thanked, God. Ray, after every loss, thanked God. Ray whole heartedly believes that God gave him the talent he has for a reason. Ray believes God gave him what he has to spread the word of Jesus Christ. Ray has changed himself, his fans, his team, and even his coaches. He is an inspiration to many.

Ray is astoundingly generous. Through his career, Ray has used his business ability to build houses for the poor. He started playing football mainly to move his mom somewhere nice. Ray will always do for people. Ray gives back. Ray cares about people more than himself. He does all of his business while spreading the word of God. Ray has done things no thought he would ever do.

Ray Lewis was an inspiration to fans, coaches, and players for almost two decades. Ray Lewis was unbelievable at football on the field, and an amazing person off the field. He has changed the lives of many, serving God in the process. He started off shaky, but changed into a devout Christian. Ray Lewis will be missed throughout the National Football League, but never forgotten.
