LEADERSHIP STYLE

Pai’s grandfather is an autocratic leader he wants everything to be his way or no way. Leaders like this are very pushy and don’t like to take opinion from others.

Koro had an absolute authoritarian be in charge of over all the people around him.

Pai was a servant leader. The phrase servant leader describes a person or leader who is not officially acknowledged. As you can see Pai she wasn’t recognized as a leader. Reason been she was a young girl and her grandfather didn’t believe that a female can be a leader. Pai also showed trait leader ship which is clear to as included patterns of personal characteristics that reveal a range of personality differences and cultivate reliable leader efficiency transversely a variety of crowd and organisational situations(zaccaro ,kemp and bader’2004)she is an example of how a person can be made a leader.

Effectiveness of a leader

Koro is a vastly effective leader; he is followed and listened to he knows his people and he has a incredibly extensive data of his people and their culture which is very important to the Maori surroundings of the movie. The one downfall that Koro had was he was a extremely rigid person as a result at times he makes decisions that are ruled by this rigidity and refusal to change rather than what is good for everyone.

On the other hand Paikea was a tough willed girl who was born a leader but her grandfather could not see that rite from the start. Pai possesses a natural leadership ability and courageous spirit that draws her to the re strengthening of her faltering tribe. She is also quite an effective person that all the village people are willing to listen to when she speaks.

Type of power

Pai's koro, Apirana,or more like the old man Paka as his wife Nanny Flowers refers to him as the chief of the tribe,Paka was very upset that his grandson did not make it. And being left with a "valueless" female. Although he does later on shape an affectionate he attachment with his granddaughter, he carried on the bicycle to school although he still resents her for several of the difficulty that the tribe is facing .there came a point at once were Pai took the decision to leave with her father for the reason that her grandfather was mistreating her. Some what she can’t find it in her heart to leave and while the car was moving asks her dad to stop the car and return back to the village. Pai's dad refuses to presume customary leadership; he would rather change his life by moving away to Germany to start a new carrier as an artist. Pai found herself to be attracted into doing leadership, learning traditional songs and dances, however is given very little back-up by her grandfather. Pai feels there is a chance of her becoming the next leader; therefore there is no role model for a woman to become a leader. But Pai is determined to succeed in becoming one.

Koro decides to structure a cultural school for the community boys, in the hope of finding the right leader. He teaches the boys how to use the taiaha (fighting stick). In the Maori culture the taiaha is only to be used by the male. One day while seating in the canoe nanny tells Pai that her younger son who is uncle Rawari, had won a taiaha tournament in his formative years while he was still slender, Pai secretly goes and asks her uncle to teach her how to use the taiaha .Pai also secretly watches and learns how her grandfather gives lessons to the students. One of the students, who is sympathetic towards Pai is Hemi.,Koro finds out that he has been teaching Pai how to fight and loses the battle with her he becomes furious at them . Koro's relationship with Pai deters rates further when he realises that none of the students are not good enough to become the next leader..Koro threw the necklace that he wore with the whale tooth on into the water with the hope that one of his students will retrieve it and bring it but to him would be worthy of becoming the future.

Pai,trys to mend the rift between her grandfather and herself she delivers an invitation to him inviting him for the contest Koro was the chief guest of honour at the concert that is held by the school which is all about the Maori chants. No one was aware that she had won the school speech contest with a touching dedication to Koro and the customs of the village. Koro was late, for the contest and Pai was very upset but she cried and poured her heart out with the love she has for him. As Koro was on his way to the school he notices that there was a group of whales that washed up on to the surface of the ocean near Pai's home. The whole village attempts to persuade and draw them back into the ocean, but all hard work prove unsuccessful; they even use a tractor to haul the whales back but it was not a success .Koro gets even more distressed of his failure and despairs more. He bands Pai from going any were near the largest whale reason been "she has done sufficient harm" with her presumption, T he biggest whale by tradition belongs to the renowned Paikea. Koro turns and walks away then she climbs onto the back of the largest whale and whispers say some Maori words and the whale starts to turn and return into the ocean. The whale precedes his position into the ocean and all the other whales follow Paikea nearly drowns in the process but the ancestors were watching over her and she survived. When nanny flowers turn around and look for Pai and does not find her she starts screaming where is my mocko and the she sees Pai on the back of the whale, Its then that Nanny Flowers takes out the necklace of the whale tooth and shows it to Koro. He then asks who the boy that brought back the tooth is and she tells him that it was Pai. He then realized that she was one chosen one to the leader Pai was found on the shore and taken to the hospital; Koro makes the announcement that Pa is the leader and asks her pardon. When Pai recovers her grandfather holds a ceremony with the villagers and her family making her the leader there was Maori chants and dancing to celebrate her leadership and the waka was hauled into the sea. Everyone took part in the celebrations including Pai;s father ,uncle new mom to be and the rest of the villagers.

Type of organisation level of seniority and its effects

This leadership circumstances in the whale rider is a part of the Ngati konohi ‘population of the little New Zealand fishing township of Whangara .a ngati is a Maori tribe and ngati porou is a Maori iwi traditionally located in the East cape and Gisborne of the north island of new Zealand ‘paikea the whale rider ‘is said to be an ancestor of the people.

. As a chief Koro has the ultimate level of seniority in the settlement and since he is the person responsible for his traditional tribe, he believes in the patrimonial line in the chiefdom i.e. his belief that Pai can never become a leader and /or the much anticipated whale rider.

Transactional leadership can still be found in Maori leadership in this film because it was in Koros interest to solidify his leadership position in his tribal society by maintaining their chiefly /Tohunga power entwined with leadership knowledge an trust (zand,1997).He needed to be autocratic and transactional since he had a dying tradition and village to think of.

Pai is at the start nowhere in the hierarchy of the tribe. She is seen as the indication of bad fortune by her grandfather who believed that his grandson should have survived but Pai doesn’t let this lack of seniority or real power get in the way. She is out spoken and what she believes in ‘she goes after it giving it her best.

The mark of leadership success for Pai as a Maori was to present leadership to her people and base it on traditional principles (whale riding; learning the taiaha; language etc) while managing the new (mead; 2006, p.14).

Individual culture and its effects

As noted above culture and tradition played a fundamental role in the leadership styles and lives of both our characters .Koro and Pais lives are full of their culture (Maori) and tradition (whale riding ‘taiaha ,chanting ,language)Their culture is what moulds each of them to be the person and the leader that they are discussed above

Other leadership concepts

This movie has illustrated the trait theory to a large extent as it is essentially the story of the whale rider ;Paikea who was born to be a leader and displayed many leadership traits in her that would enable her to be a great chief if only her grandfather did not hold so steadfastly to the patrimonial line of succession of the old days. Some traits that Pai displayed were persistence (towards Koro), respect (towards tradition), and the ability to make welcome change (riding the whale).Koro Paikea,s grandfather leader of the tribe )did not believe that paikea could be a leader because she was a female. Despite Koro’s disbelief and rejection of Paikea

She proved to him that she was capable of being a leader and much more (demonstrated when Paikea brought Koro back the whale tooth and the crayfish) although Koro may ot have directly seen it, Paikea had all the skills and potential she needed to be a leader.

As discussed previously Koro was an autocratic leader at most times which places him in the (1.9) position on Blake and Moutons leadership grid; he had 9/9 concern for the task at hand but because his culture and tradition were in danger of being wiped out, his concern for people was a 1/9.

In the end koro accepts that Pai is the leader that everyone had been waiting for .he addresses her as (Wise leader) there was a celebration in the village with all the villagers and Pais family and the canoe was hauled into the ocean with traditional tunes and singing. Bottom of Form
