What is color? According to some dictionary, color is sensation produce on eye by rays of light when resolved as by prism into different wavelength. Some might also define it as wavelength composition of light. In short in order for human to able to see color, there must be light.

Humans started to use color since 30000 years ago. Back then, humans use natural pigment to draw simple but beautiful painting in the caves. It slowly evolve in the by discoveries of new color by mixing two or more color together. The mixing of different colors to create new colors was discovered by Plato. Now there are thousands of different types of color that can be easily from his discoveries.

But the most important discoveries were made by Sir Isaac Newton. He found that by directing a white light to a prism, there are seven different colors being projected out. He then blocks six out of seven lights and directed the ray to another prism. The output from the second prism was the same color as it had been when it started. From that point onwards, he has changed the understanding of light and color. This discovery enables Sir Isaac Newton to understand the rainbow phenomenon.

Back in ancient times of the Egyptian, they believe that color have healing properties. Even the Chinese at 2000 years ago started to use color as part of their healing practice and record diagnoses in color. In the early 20th century, studies were conducted to see how color can be used as some form of therapy in treating depression and migraine.

Therefore we cannot denied that color play a much bigger part in human lives other than just create painting. It has become a big part of our lives whether in work or play and even health.

The most important part color in humans live is that it will create responses psychologically and induce physiological perception. This in turns will create influence to our daily lives whether it is in fashion, art or commerce just to name a few. It also has the possibility to affect our physical and emotional sensations. Human’s reactions to color are instinctive and learned. While instinctive reaction seems to be universal, learned reaction is much influence by culture. Different culture will have different perception and feeling towards a color.

For example the three primaries color their universal reaction towards it. The red color will evoke the deepest and dangerous emotion in humans. It can bring excitement, energy, desire, speed, heat, love and all things passionate. However red also represent blood, aggression, danger and violence.

The color yellow brings totally opposite perception compared to red. Humans generally see the color yellow as the color of happiness, imagination, joy and optimism. It also brings the meaning of summer time, gold and wealth. That is the good side of the color yellow. The other side of yellow is it can induce the feeling of anxiety and unease. It also has the capability to create an atmosphere of jealousy, illness and betrayal.

Blue universally recognize as the color of life and renewal. This is because our sky and water are blue in color. It can evoke peace, tranquility, stability, harmony, unity and security. Back in ancient Greece, the color blue represents virginity. The other side of blue is emotional coldness and depression.

Other than representation mentioned above, color also represent a concept. This means it has specific meaning. For example, in traffic light red means stop and green means go universally. Another good example is green robe that wore by surgeon worldwide. Green has calm effect towards humans. That’s why we see all the operation room and robe are green color in the whole wide world.

However nature has different usage for color compare to human’s world. In human’s world, color serves as viewing pleasure or to evoke emotion response. In the nature colors have meaning or purpose to it. Some animals get their unique color from its diet. Take flamingo as an example, its color is pink but flamingo do not have the capability to produce pink pigmentation on its own. The color comes from its diet of plankton and shrimps. The color from the food that they eat is transferred and thus we see a pink flamingo. If you ever see a gray color flamingo, means it’s not getting enough diet of the shrimp and plankton.

In the animal world, colors are used to differentiate between species. For instance, in closely related species, color will be the main differential. Other than used as gender differential, it is also serve as warning. Animals advertise warning message through display of vibrant and striking colors. For some animals such as chameleon, colors are used as defensive method against predator. Chameleon has the capability to change the color to match the surrounding environment.

Most human in the world does not realize that color play a big part in their lives. This is because humans are surrounded by colors from the moment they are born. Have we ever asked ourselves why we like to be in some places for long period of time while in some environment we can’t wait to leave the place? This is because color affect human’s emotion and thinking. There is also a studies that this unnoticed phenomenon also affects blind people.

Human’s perception towards color varies depend on the surrounding light brightness. We talk a room painted green as an example. In a dim light condition, the green room looks bluish green and will not bring the calm effect which it can bring. However if the room is fill with bright light, we can see the vibrant green compare to the bluish green earlier.

Another example is the color in the food that human takes daily. Let’s say we serve a person with a plate of food that is dull and colorless. The subject most probably will only consume small quantity and will feel loss of appetite even is the food is delicious. This reaction not only affects a person who is not hungry, a person who is hungry will also react in this way. This is because human’s perception towards color in foods is the more colorful the dish, the better it will taste. If we change the food to more colorful with the addition of different types of vegetables, meat and sauce the subject will gladly finish the food even he is not that hungry. Some might even say, it tastes better than it actually is.

However back in the time beginning of human, color play a different role in their lives. Early humans select the food they eat through the color it is in. An ancient human tends to avoid foods that are pale and look dull. They pick and eat fruits which are bright in color. They understand that the fruit is ripe and can be eaten from the color it displays.

Humans also apply and use color in their business world. In the business and corporate world, color used specifically in branding. This is because specific color used in the branding of the company logo can bring hidden message. Correct usage of color can also enhance human’s memory of the brand because color can represent a concept or trigger memory recall.

This can be seen on the logo, packaging and promotional items. Normally there will be a dominant color in these items. Selection of dominant color depends on the purpose and culture of the place the brand is promoted. Generally, the color used in branding are categorize to cold and warm color. Color categorize as cold color are blue and it normally carry calm and reserved message. Color like red and yellow are categorized as warm. These warm colors generally carries energetic and outgoing message.

For example, bank will normally incorporate the color blue in their logo. Generally blue is perceived as trustworthy, secure, responsible and dependable. Humans have this understanding from the nature. By using blue in the logo or promotional leaflet, it will automatically send the message of trustworthy and stability. As describe earlier, green is normally used in Operation Theater and surgeon’s robe. This is because green can induce calmness and serenity in patients.

Another good example is the color white. It is widely used in the baby products and medical equipment or tools. White represents purity and cleanliness in human’s perception. That’s why we can see that all the baby and medical product are generally white in color.

Color also widely used as a form of therapy in the human lives. This is seen as early as Ancient times from the historical records which they left behind. In modern times, colors are being used as alternative treatment method. Researchers have proven that different color has different wavelength and vibration. Healers use this variation of wavelength and vibration on specific areas of the body. It will resonate with energies in different parts of body and can have healing effect. Healer use method of using color in treatment are meditation with color, shining light to specific parts of the body and placing color silk on the body just to name a few.

One of the famous healing with color is healer who practices Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, human have seven energy center or known as chakra. If one of the chakra is out of balance, the treatment will be using the specific light to balance it. Although there are no scientific prove that this true, it has been practice for thousands of years.

According to Ayurveda teaching there are seven major colors which are used in applying treatment. The seven major colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. These colors are used in specific amount as too much will have bad effect.

All the above shows that colors play integral part of human’s lives as we all are surrounded by colors. Color helps us see and recognize between different objects. This difference will draw our attention, and it serves as a message that gives us information on the things that we see. This information tells human things such as an apple is ripe or not, a person’s race and nationality or to stop or go at traffic light whenever we see light changing from red to green. However this information that the color carries will not benefit the color blind community. Currently the color blind community is living in disadvantage as they are not fully experience what color gives. Hopefully in the near future there will be new discoveries that enable the color blind community to see and enjoy what everyone is experiencing.

Humans are creative and new innovative way to use color in creative way. Therefore the future will be bright as long as there is color in human’s life and environment.
