POLICY STATEMENT

To all Employees, Visitors and Contractors:

As your employer it is my duty to comply with Health, Safety and Welfare Act 2005 and the General Applications Regulations 2007.

We have carried out the risk assessment of all our processes and operations and consulted with relevant employees.

This Statement contains safety and health measures we are implementing to protect all employees, customers, contractors and other members of the public visiting the site.

The owner will give information and training on how to comply with the safety statement, but every employee is equally responsible for the compliance.

We will ensure that appropriate channels of communication are in place to facilitate effective consultation and communication with staff and those who are affected by the activities of the Mervue Pharmacy.

The aim of consultation and communication will be to promote a positive safety culture through enabling staff to contribute to the decision making process as it relates to safety, health and welfare at work.

We are further committed to ensuring that the safety management system will be subject to continual monitoring and review so that we can ensure that the work environment and systems of work continue to be safe and that they contribute to quality improvement.

The resources and funding needed to effect this policy will be made available.

This policy will be updated as necessary and will be reviewed at least once per year.

DECLARATION OF INTENT

The Safety Statement has been prepared in accordance with the provisions of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. The basic intent of the document is to formally declare the means by which the owner of the Mervue Pharmacy ensures, in so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare of staff, clients and others such as visitors, and contractors who may be affected by our activities. The Safety Statement contains details of the Mervue Pharmacy general arrangements for occupational safety health and welfare within the service. Safety is everybody's business and the success of our safety policy will depend on staff co-operation. It is important that staff are familiar with the arrangements for health and safety in the service and incorporate these as an integral part of the tasks performed while at work. Members of staff and others are invited to contribute to the improvement of safety in the service by making suggestions for the improvement of this Statement through their Safety Representative.

GENERAL DUTIES OF THE EMPLOYER.

According to Section 8 Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 shall:

Ensure the safety, health and welfare at work of the employees.

Manage and conduct work activities the way to prevent, so far as reasonably practicable, any improper conduct or behaviour likely to put the safety at work of the employees at risk

Provide and maintain of the site in a condition that is safe and without risk to health

Provide and maintan safe means of access to and egress from the site

Provide systems of work that are planned, organised, performed, maintained and revised as appropriate so as to be, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to health providing and maintaining facilities and arrangements for the welfare of his or her employees at work;

Provide the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure the safety, health, and welfare at work of the employees when identifying hazards and carrying out a risk assessment when preparing a safety statement,ensuring that the measures take account of changing circumstances and the general principles of prevention.

Determine and implement the safety, health and welfare measures necessary for the protection of the safety, health and welfare the employees.

Prepare and revise, as appropriate, adequate plans and procedures to be followed and measures to be taken in the case of an emergency or serious and imminent danger

Report accidents and dangerous occurrences

DUTIES OF THE EMPLOYEES

Mervue Pharmacy's Employees are reminded of their duties under the Health, Safety and Welfare Act 2005, and General Application Regulations 2007:

Take reasonable care of their own safety and safety of their collegues.

Read and understand the Mervue Pharmacy Safety Statement.

Collaborate with the Owner and the Manager to enable them to comply with statutory requirements.

Report to the Manager any defects in equipment, systems of work, place of work,which might endanger the safety, health, welfare in Mervue Pharmacy.

Make proper use of the equipment provided to perform job activities.

Use personal protective equipment appropriately and maintain it in good condition.

Avoid playing dangerous practical jokes.

Report all injuries occuring at work to the Manager even if a particular injury does not prevent an Employee from working.

Suggest safety improvements in methods and processes of work in Mervue Pharmacy.

Ensure they know emergency procedures in the event of fire

Ensure they know the location of the First Aid Kit.

Help to maintain high standards of the housekeeping and hygiene

Employees found guilty of the willful unsafe behaviour may be liable to disciplinary action and in consequence, a dismissal.

Employees are forbidden to misuse or interfere with the safety equipment

MERVUE PHARMACY OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Owner of the Mervue Pharmacy is responsible for implementation of the procedures contained in the Safety Statement

The Owner takes upon her the ultimate responsibility to ensure that the Employees are provided with correct information and proper training to perform job activities

The Owner will supervise the Mervue Pharmacy's Health and Safety Programme

The Owner will review the safety regulations annualy and, when necessary, recommend changes

The Owner will investigate all major accidents or damage to Mervue Pharmacy property and recommend appropriate steps to be taken.

Ensure the records of all the accidents as hazards and 'near misses' reports are maintained

Ensure that provisions ensuring fire safety are adequate

Ensure that sufficient funding is available to meet regulatory requirements of health and safety

Drug records and prescriptions are acurately recorded and maintained

The Owner will make it her main goal to reduce accidents and health exposureand she lead by example in compliance to stated policy.

MERVUE PHARMACY MANAGER'S RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Manager will ensure effective implementation of the health and safety standards in Mervue Pharmacy.

Ensure that Employees are given proper information and training to do ther jos effectively and that their work targets are realistic and do not impact negatively their health and safety.

Supports Employees enabling them to take correct decisions regarding their safety and health

Ensure that all the new Employees comply with the safety procedures

Ensure that effective communication procedures are implemented so that Employees are aware of the workplace standards and how to access the Safety Statement and other safety information.

Organise and coordinate safety training according to needs

Make sure that all the Employees under Manager's direct supervision know their responsibilities

Assist the Employees in performing their work responsibilities and advise and determine the most suitable methods and order of working

Distribute the work load in a way to not compromise health and safety standards

Know where the First Aid Kit is

Know the fire evacuation procedures

Report any accident, incident or 'near miss' to the Owner of the Pharmacy.

CONTRACTORS' AND SUPPLIERS' RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mervue Pharmacy requests all its contractors and suppliers to:

Read, understand and sign Mervue Pharmacy Safety Statement

Submit their Safety Policies and Insurances prior to commencement of work to the Manager or the Owner of the Mervue Pharmacy

Comply with Mervue Pharmacy Safety Policy

Report to the Manager of the Mervue Pharmacy any injury sustained during performance of work

Comply with safety instructions given by the Manager or the Owner of the Mervue Pharmacy

Ensure that they only use safe equipment in good working conditions with safety guards if necessary and any necessary certificates available for control.

As it is a requirement under the Construction Regulations 2006, suppliers and contractors are ask to submit any manuals and drawings of changes in:

Wiring

Maintenance

Installations

Equipment

These will be held on file in the Manager's desk.

As it is a requirement under the Fire Safety Act 1981/2003, the Fire Safety Manual should be updated on all maintenance services.

SAFETY INDUCTION

A general induction will be provided to all the Employees starting work in Mervue Pharmacy. Apart from the information explaining to the new employee what exactly they will be asked to do and who they will be reporting to, the new employee:

Will be shown where the Safety Statement is kept and explained its purpose

Will read, understand and sign the Safety Statement

Will be advised of any dangerous area at work

Will be shown where the First Aid Box is kept

Will be explained the procedures of what to do in case of an accident and how to report it

Will be shown the fire and evacuation procedures and the assembly points

TRAINING

Employees' training will be carried out in all areas pertaining to health and safety:

First Aid

Safety Awareness

Fire Safety

Manual Handling.

Fire drills will be performed regularly as reasonably practicable.

Details of the training

Signature of the Employee and the Trainer to make sure the training was carried out properly and understood.

ACCIDENT REPORTING:

It is required under the Health and Safety and Welfare at work Act 2005 to report to the Health & Safety Authority all the accidents that result in personal injury.

Accidents defined as 'reportable' are those resulting in death of the Employee or three or more working day’s absence from the normal work duty.

SAFETY CONSULTATIONS:

Mervue Pharmacy is bound to meet its obligations under section 13 of the Health, Safety and Welfare Act 2005 and General Applications 2007 on consultation with its Employees. The Manager will meet with the Employees on a regular basis to consult with and take an account of any suggestions given by the Employees on health and safety aspects at work.

To facilitate such a consultation a 'Suggestion Form' will be designed and produced by the Manager. Blank forms will be kept in the Manager's desk and filled out by Employees as required.

The forms will be reviewed on a weekly basis by the Manager.

THE SAFETY REPERSENTATIVE

Employees of the Mervue Pharmacy appoint Safety Representative.

Safety Reppresentative has right to:

Receive advice from the H&Safety Authority

Carry out inspections and investigate hazards

Information from the Employer to ensure safety and welfare of the Employees

Be informed by the Employer about HSA inspector visit to the site

SAFETY COMMITTEE:

The Mervue Pharmacy commits to organise regular Safety Committee meetings.

Safety Committee members will include the Owner, the Manager and the Employees' Safety Representative. The Committee will meet on first Tuesday of every month.

Committee's meetings will progress according to the following agenda:

Review any new safety legislation or guidelines applicable to Mervue Pharmacy'

Review accidents or incidents from the previous period (month)

Review Employees' suggestions

Prepare the meeting communication for the Employees' notice board

RESOURCES:

Mervue Pharmacy Owner understands that for the effective and adequate implementation of the safety procedures presented in this Safety Statment appropriate funding and resources should be made available.

The Owner of the Mervue Pharmacy declares to:

Include health and safety needs into the financial counts of running a business

Make sure that all work activities are carried out by adequately trained staff

ACCESSIBILITY OF THE SAFETY STATEMENT

This Safety Statement will be read and signed by every Employee and Contractor prior to start their employment in Mervue Pharmacy and will be stored on file in the Manager's computer.

A hard copy of the Statement will be kept on file in Manager's desk.

REVISION OF THE SAFETY STATEMENT

The Safety Statement will be revised annually.
